How do people keep on top of greys

I want to cover my greys. I have been using a box dye for years but colouring every 3-4 weeks is destroying my hair. I have a consultation next week with a hair dresser but I need something manageable. Do people go for foils/highlights every 12+ weeks and keep on top of greys by colouring the roots with a box dye? Have I made that up? No one does grey blending near me. I use a 7 box dye so it’s not too dark but I want healthier hair and can’t afford the hair dresser every time the greys show. How do people manage?

I don’t have loads, but the grey ones I do have are unruly and so wiry. I’m also thinning as a result of menopause (what joy). The other day I just went and plucked out all the greys because I realised they weren’t bringing anything to the party. My hair looks better without them, even in its thinning state.

It’s all so depressing.

I’ve tried alsorts. I’ve naturally very dark hair but by roots come in white/grey. Years ago i tried highlights but then over time my whole hair was a gingery blonde and I don’t suit it - think Celtic pale skin or English rose pale skin. I went back to my dark brown but the roots do show up after a week or 2. I use the roots spray until my next appointment which is usually 8 weeks. I do go longer when I’m skint. People keep telling me to embrace my grey but the colour would wash me out. And I’m not psychologically ready.

My trick for covering up the regrowth between each hair dye is very cheap eyeshadow. Much cheaper than some other regrowth products. I just use a wide eyeshadow brush to 'paint' over the white that is coming through.

I am still holding onto my dark brown colour because of this method. It is manageable at the moment. I will go lighter in the future.

Hate dying my hair - I psych myself up for it each time because it takes so long! Don't want to go grey though.

Could you share which hair dye you’re using? I use semi-permanent L’Oréal and it doesn’t fully wash out. My hairdresser confirmed this too. Also, after my most recent colour my hair has become very dry. I’m not sure if it’s the different shade or perhaps they have changed the formula.

I use Casting Crème Gloss - which is L’Oréal but it’s shade 600 - not sure if that makes a difference? I found the Clairol semi permanent didn’t wash out fully, but this one seems ok?

I started going grey in my early 20s and found nothing that could give me coverage for more than a week so owned a lot of hats.
I gave up hair dye in my 40s and went for highlights to blend in the greys. That was too expensive so I gave up entirely a couple of years later and although I would prefer not to be grey I have never had so many compliments.
I get young people asking if it’s dyed and random strangers approaching me to ask about it.
i think I lucked out (as far as premature grey goes) as it came through in thick white streaks and my natural colour is very dark so looks quite dramatic. I wouldn’t have known this if I didn’t stop covering it.

I use the wow powder between hairdresser appointments (about ever six weeks). It’s a faff though. I’m not confident enough to do box dye on my own. When I tried the L’Oréal root touch up spray it coloured my scalp at my parting which looked odd (happy to hear of any techniques to avoid this!).

Hairdresser does my roots every 6 or 7 weeks. My hair grows fast so I use the L'Oreal root spray in between appointments rather than dying it myself. I think it is so good.

hold a make up brush or a pencil. along your hair line when spraying. something long and thin
bumble and bumble do a coloured dry shampoo or morracan oil do aswell I find they easier to use and don't transfer either as bad

I am just doing the roots though the root retouch up box is too little for my hair, so I use Nutrisse. I have got a professional brush to apply the dye so it’s do much easier to apply and not miss the greys and also less mess in the bathroom, I also use a good hair mask once a week and also at least a few times a month rosemary oil mixed with coconut oil for my scalp and also through the hair. My hair looks healthy and I am so much happier without greys!

Your hairdresser will absolutely advise against colouring your hair with box dye and bleaching over box dye will be a delicate process.

i go for a root touch up every 3 weeks, I only have a full head every 10 weeks or so. When I have my roots it’s literally a case of having the colour and then a wash and I dry it myself at the drying bar. I have a 10 minute colour so I’m in and out in an hour.

L’Oréal spray on colour between hairdresser

EdinaTheConfessor · 23/06/2026 19:42

I just do my roots using a root touch up permanent dye (the clairol one, don’t use L’Oréal it’s crap)

I used to do my whole head but find box dye even shades lighter than I think I need are too dark so I don’t want that all over. Was also worried about the condition of my lengths dyeing them too frequently.

I also use a root touch up powder between colours, which work wonders as I have thinning hair at my temples which is where the most of my greys are and when they are growing out there it makes me look balding without the powder!

I use Plantur39 Brown shampoo and conditioner most washes and it keeps the greys at bay without actually dying the hair (it is colour depositing, not a dye).

About once a week I wash with a purple shampoo and conditioner because I find the Plantur39 Brown can go a bit brassy as it builds up on the lengths of the hair rather than the roots. That keeps it toned to an ash blonde/brown colour.

Gentle on the hair, and doesn’t take 20+ minutes to colour the hair.

To be clear, I use Plantur 39 Brown, NOT their Plantur Anti-Grey Effect, which IS a permanent dye. Though that might work for you if you don’t mind the permanence?

I tried with the plantur 39 and I gave it weeks to work, but it didn't. It might be good if you just have the odd grey, but if like me you have mostly greys with a white strip of regrowth, don't bother with this stuff.

I find dyeing my hair a lighter brown and having highlights about every six months helps with the regrowth. I'm only 46 and according to my (very blunt) hairdresser, I am very grey for my age :-/

I am pretty much 100% white-grey when the roots come in, and it works perfectly for me.

I guess it depends on each persons hair.

Shedmistress · 24/06/2026 16:48

I just shaved all my hair off, got the dye out in one swift session, no 7 on top and no 4 on sides. I try to keep it like that when I can be arsed to get the shaver out.

Fiddlesticks1 · 25/06/2026 06:51

I was having my hair coloured when I was going grey and it became so out of condition that I ditched dying and opted to go grey gracefully. Prior to dying I was a wash and go girl and going back to that, I am fortunate that my hair still remains very soft and I am often complemented on my silver hair.
I prefer well conditioned hair to colour.
