How do people keep on top of greys

pinkyponkyplink · 22/06/2026 09:49

I want to cover my greys. I have been using a box dye for years but colouring every 3-4 weeks is destroying my hair. I have a consultation next week with a hair dresser but I need something manageable. Do people go for foils/highlights every 12+ weeks and keep on top of greys by colouring the roots with a box dye? Have I made that up? No one does grey blending near me. I use a 7 box dye so it’s not too dark but I want healthier hair and can’t afford the hair dresser every time the greys show. How do people manage?

I use the L’Oréal root touch up spray. It just washes out and saves dying it so much

I have some greys and I get a balayage done. Basically blonde highlights but they are blended into the root for a natural look. It masks the greys and doesn’t need to be done regularly (once or twice a year).

Non-ammonia highlights at the salon, once every six weeks.

I'm still only about 30% grey so it looks fairly natural.

BathshebaB · 22/06/2026 19:26

I use semi permanent every 4 weeks and it’s not damaged my hair at all. I do the roots for 10 and then 10 more for the rest of my hair. It is just about washing out after 4 weeks but my roots are showing by then anyway so it needs redoing. I used permanent once and never again - looked like Lego hair as was all the same colour and damaged my hair

I had dark brown hair in my youth ... now I'm going grey , I get highlights 3 times a year with a base brown colour. Every 4- 5 weeks I dye the roots.Between weeks 3 and 5 I use the root spray or powder stuff. I use Loreal excellence permanent No 5. I only use half the contents ( measured into a bowl and put on with a brush like the hairdresser uses) and save the other half for next time. I only do the roots . First put colour on the roots around the front and crown where can see . Tie my hair in top of head and then you can do around your ears and back of neck. Then abandon the brush , and use your gloved hands to push the rest of the dye around the rest of your roots....

GreenCa · 22/06/2026 22:02

Half head highlights every 6 weeks.

livelovelough24 · 22/06/2026 22:06

I stopped dying my hair and have beautiful silver highlights no one believes are natural. I am free of dying my hair every few weeks, I save some money and most importantly, I absolutely love it. 😊

80smonster · 22/06/2026 22:14

Full head highlights every 4 months. I use a colour deposit mask in between hair dresser visits. I’ve recently discovered Shisheido Fino hair mask, that’s a real game changer for over bleached hair.

NotMeNoNo · 22/06/2026 22:22

I get mine done every 6 weeks at the hairdresser. In between, L'Oréal Magic retouch spray just along my parting and crown.

RazorsAtDawn · 22/06/2026 22:23

My hair is thick, long (mid back) and my natural colour is a dark chestnut. I have highlights every six months which blends the grey reasonably well. Between highlights I use a Clairol root touch up (probably once every six weeks, no.5) just on the top section to cover the half inch of patchy regrowth. Looks like a balyage atm and I'm a pro at doing it. Refuse to pay my hairdressers extortionate prices for something I can do just as good myself for £5.99. Eventually I'll have proper grey blending before going fully grey, but I doubt I'll ever cut it short. I'm otherwise super low maintainance and my hair is my crown.

GrandmasCat · 22/06/2026 22:41

I have dark hair, I let the roots grew longer covering them for a while with those root coverage sprays and then asked my hairdresser to “bleach” my hair as if she was doing highlights and then neutralised the yellowish strands with something purple.

This blended the demarcation line between my gray hair and the dyed lengths inútil it grew longer, then a cut and I ended up with nice, soft, grey hair. I get a lot of compliments about it, as long as you have a nice haircut it looks presentable and trendy.

deepseaargyllfish · 22/06/2026 22:57

I bought a Superdrug own brand permanent box dye a few days ago, as close to my natural colour as possible. Used only about one-fifth or one-sixth of the bottle, and applied it only to the area of my hair which is particularly affected by greys.

it looks good! It doesn’t look like that very harsh solid colour you often have with box dye.

so this is how I manage my greys. I’m a little concerned that I will dry out my hair if I do it too frequently.

PancakeCloud · 22/06/2026 23:03

I have highlights including very light ones which sort of blend with the grey. Have them every 3-4 months so it is expensive. Sometimes touch up between appts with spray / powder.

Everything0Everywhere · 22/06/2026 23:06

Hairdressers every 8-9 weeks and I use L'Oréal Magic Retouch spray in between. It's a spray-on colour and works perfectly. There are many shades too.

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 22/06/2026 23:06

Ask Andy Burnham, I reckon he dyes his greys.

CarolinaLeah · 22/06/2026 23:09

I was asking a similar question to yours about 18 months ago as my hair ends were awful. I then read a couple of people saying as pp said - just do the roots which is now all I do every 5 weeks or so. The ends are in better condition and they aren’t ’black/ brown’ looking like they did when I put the complete dye all over for the last 5 minutes (my colour is a 7 dark blonde).

I haven’t got the time, money or patience for a hairdresser to do my colour.

kkloo · 22/06/2026 23:18

Buy salon dye at a beauty supply shops and a low volume of developer, if you’re only depositing colour then you don’t need a high one like what comes with box dyes

Swissmeringue · 22/06/2026 23:19

I dye mine every 5/6 weeks. I only do the roots and alternate between permanent and semi permanent so I'm only using the more damaging permanent dye once every 3 months. I use root touch up spray in weeks 4/5 if my roots are looking a bit noticeable.

justasking111 · 22/06/2026 23:26

I had to stop when I reacted to hair dye something to do with the menopause. My hair had thinned too. So I went for balayage and grew out the dye. It took two years. But my hair was healthy and thick again. Now I'm gloriously grey just use a purple shampoo sometimes.

The Nice and Easy root touch up kits are very small so I only do my T-line and crown, trying my best to do the roots in sections. Not sure that it would stretch any further.

I use Clairol Nice'n Easy Crème Oil Infused Permanent Hair Dye every 5 weeks. The package is for the whole head but I use only a third to half of the bottle/tube each time for my roots. That is more than enough to cover the roots over my whole head.

My hair seems to be in good condition and not damaged.

As I am only touching up my roots, I don't see how a hair salon could do better. I am not doing highlights or anything fancy. It costs me less than £50 in total a year, which one salon visit would easily exceed.* *

I stopped dyeing my hair when it got to the point of doing it every 3 weeks - it ruins your hair and is a pain in the arse to keep doing it so often! I've embraced the grey and my hair looks so much better now and feels silky soft and lovely. I get compliments all the time which I never did before! You don't say what age you are but after a certain age, I think dyed hair looks a bit harsh and the colour is too solid. I'm in my 50s and I think grey hair suits my skin tone much better.

How do you make it look nice? Do you have dark hair? My greys are coarse and whispy

sohard · 23/06/2026 00:31

Clairol root touch up.

Could you share which hair dye you’re using? I use semi-permanent L’Oréal and it doesn’t fully wash out. My hairdresser confirmed this too. Also, after my most recent colour my hair has become very dry. I’m not sure if it’s the different shade or perhaps they have changed the formula.

PangolinFriend · 23/06/2026 07:40

I go to a very good London hairdresser twice a year and have highlights and lowlights put in that just blend in with my grey sprinkles. Don't have many greys despite being ancient or I wouldn't bother at all, but my face is now the wrong colour for my natural hair colour - happens with age.
