Summer dress - keep or return

Bought this in the John Lewis sale for hot days in the office. It's a very light viscose material. I'm not sure though now about the pattern, should I keep or return do you think?

Summer dress - keep or return

Yes, I'm going to try the brown shirt dress too I think.

Op yes the maxi navy next dress, the roman brown one and the markies shirt one are much more current than your initial dress, which is very dated.

wide skirts, midaxi/maxi are very current, with a closer fitting top half. They are also very flattering on unless you’re really apple shaped. Which you are not.

they are also very cool, I live in them in the heat as you can look very elegant, and you also stay cool.

goingtotown · 22/06/2026 16:56

Return, it’s too short.

Viscose is highly breathable and also wicks.

I must be built differently from you and @PhaedraTwo Viscose doesn't work that well for me. And yes I do know what it is, although I guess I can't vouch for the label

It’s not opinion or bodies, factually viscose is highly breathable.

I'm 5 ft 9 and 50, not quite ready to be classed as an old ladyI'm 5 ft 9 and 50, not quite ready to be classed as an old lady

The dress you picked is not "an old lady" dress. It's a nondescript dress. It could be the pictorial dictionary definition of "nondescript". It's the sort of dress that makes me think why did anyone bother to design it, make it, distribute it or buy it. It also looks cheaper than it is.

Why do posters seem to think that over the age of 60 women are drawn to such nondescript clothes? I'm 67. I wouldn't wear it. I wouldn't wear most of the other suggestions, and certainly none of the Roman dresses.

We know.

I don’t think it’s flattering at all. Sorry but I’d send it back.

Selfies usually aren’t flattering at all! I think the poster probably has a great figure & if she’s comfortable in the dress than that’s all that matters.

I didnt know that.

HortiGal · 22/06/2026 18:18

All three are very dreary, is there any colours you’d wear? summer is for colour.

Says who???

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 22/06/2026 18:33

A lot of posts coming back re the viscose.

I can only say what my experience is - it always feels like a sheet of plastic on me in the summer in the same was as acrylics / polyester

There’s something incredibly classy about a summer dress in black

Well she can't be comfortable or she wouldn't be asking here. If you (general you) don't know whether to keep a dress without asking on here the answer is "No" Regardless of what the dress looks like.

notatinydancer · 22/06/2026 18:40

Not keen. Sorry.

Duvetdayforme · 22/06/2026 18:40

Return, sorry

BlueFahrenheit · 22/06/2026 18:45

Return it.

Viscose is an awful material.

Allseeingallknowing · 22/06/2026 18:53

I think it would look better if it were a bit longer. I don’t mind viscose irs light and easy toy care for. I think your dress would be fine for work.

Screamingabdabz · 22/06/2026 18:55

I love thin floaty viscose dresses in the summer (not the jersey kind). Nothing is cooler. It is a natural fibre. I buy them loads bigger because they do shrink in the wash though.

I would return that dress though. The print is not particularly flattering.

EnidVance · 22/06/2026 18:58

It’s just very ‘meh’.

Allseeingallknowing · 22/06/2026 19:00

mrspk · 22/06/2026 16:15

That’s better! Why the hatred for Roman from some on here? Is it snobbery? They have a huge selection and some very nice clothes

Can’t have been viscose, which is a light and airy material

I like this one, but more for holidays than the office - Chocolate Textured Floral Lace Maxi Dress | Roman UK https://share.google/UPQQplySRweIH8dFE

I love this but they don’t do it in my size. Anyone seen similar?!

Gleba · 22/06/2026 19:09

Look for cotton poplin rather than jersey if you want it to be cool. H&M has some nice shirt type ones.

Calliopespa · 22/06/2026 19:33

MajorSamanthaCarter · 22/06/2026 13:38

That fabric is really ugly, like a well washed teddy bear.

I'm not sure why but there is a bit of that texture abut this summer and it makes me feel vaguely ill - like really manky skin that needs exfoliation or something! Or some kind of horrible skin disease that doesn't exist but would be intensely itchy and sore.
