6th form leavers do for son in 30° heat!

Leavers do this Thursday and we are unprepared!
Was thinking maybe...linen shirt, smart chino trousers and possibly a waistcoat?
I know it is normally a suit but it's going to be so hot!
Any ideas, probably left it too late for Vinted...

I think a linen and chino combo is a good shout- it’s going to be boiling 🥵

Honeyhonay · 21/06/2026 14:11

Your son is almost a grown man, he can get himself dressed.
Honestly no wonder so many men are useless!

lilaccamille · 21/06/2026 14:12

Doesn’t he dress himself?

Whosthetabbynow · 21/06/2026 14:13

How’s he going to cope on a hot day in the office?!!

Surely he can figure out his own clothing needs at this age op?

Thislittlepiggylikeschocolate · 21/06/2026 14:29

Yes of course he can sort his own clothing out, I just wasn't sure what others were wearing, and whether that would be smart enough.

Surely he will have a better idea of what others are wearing by asking his friends vs him mum asking strangers on mumsnet?

LilacDrift · 21/06/2026 15:23

He needs to ask his mates what they are wearing or just decide for himself.

TheCurious0range · 21/06/2026 15:28

It'll look better if there is some kind of consensus, he needs to speak to his friends, if they all go in chino shorts and linen shirts it'll look great, if some go in suits, some in trousers and tie but no jacket, some in linen shorts it'll just look odd

Do no mothers on here help their dds choose outfits for their proms? Find the right shoes etc?

No. They decided for themselves. I just provided the cash.

anniegun · 21/06/2026 15:37

Lynx - loads of it.

tinyspiny · 21/06/2026 15:38

If it’s any help @Thislittlepiggylikeschocolate , our eldest is a high school assistant head and they have their yr 11 prom this Thursday and he will wear chinos , a shirt and a waistcoat ( from Next) as it’s his ‘prom’ kit .

No. I provided money and said what was too short/revealing. Otherwise she did it herself. If they’re old enough to go to prom, they’re old enough to do the research and dress themselves.

Don’t forget the golden MN rule. Absolutely no parental advice, helpful discussion or assistance to be offered to any child over the age of 16, much less 18, (which will tie them to your apron strings forever). They have to stand on their own two feet in every respect! (Up until then, of course you can track them, keep tabs on their phones, and impose strict curfews to your heart’s content).

ToiletKaren · 21/06/2026 15:51

I've just googled Mumsnet+prom dress and a long list of threads on this subject comes up - there are some mothers who clearly are involved, even if not on this thread!

Why is MN so weird about this kind of thing? I ask my mum for help and advice on all kinds of things and I'm 38. I support myself, manage my own life and am a "grown adult" but I also have conversations with people close to me and listen to their suggestions, you know, like I assumed most normal humans did?

There's giving advice and then there's asking MN what your 18 year olds should wear. I stopped dressing my kids long before they were 18.

You would be happy for your mum to ask MN what you should wear to an event then?

Er... yes? Why would be "unhappy" or even give a shit?

I’m not the poster you were responding to, but yes, if I wasn’t sure. I’m happy to gather advice from anyone! Sadly, not my dear Mum anymore, though.

ToiletKaren · 21/06/2026 15:58

Surely no one would ever ask for advice about clothes then - if I'm old enough to go on holiday, why should I need to ask anyone for bikini advice? If I can run a marathon, why would I ask about the best trainers for it?

I wouldn’t care. How would I even know? It’s anonymous. It’s not like she’s pasted a pic of him on the internet asking for opinions.
Mumsnet is so weird sometimes.

You are asking for yourself though.

If my DS asked for advice on what to wear for his leavers do. I'd advise him to ask his mates. Not choose his clothes for him on the advice of MN.

WhateverMate · 21/06/2026 16:01

Is this not something a 16 year old should be sorting for himself??

I have 3 adult sons and at no time past their 12th birthdays did they expect me to help them dress for any occasion.
