Anyone turned up at a wedding in the same outfit as another guest?

We were at a wedding last weekend and there were two guests wearing the same (very nice) striped handkerchief hem dress. They spent the whole day avoiding each other.

Lots of discussion among other guests about how turning up in the same dress as someone else was a real risk in the 80s or early 90s where there was limited choice on the high street.

But nowadays, what's the chances?

Yep. A few years ago I was at a friends wedding and another guest and I were wearing identical dresses.

We complimented each other on our excellent taste and didn't think any more about it.

OuEstLaPlage · Today 10:33

It happened to me, same dress as the bridesmaids. Luckily it was a local-ish wedding, I drove home after the church and got changed.

cramptramp · Today 10:35

No. But it wouldn’t bother me if I did. I don’t understand why it’s an issue.

LaliqueSaltGrinder · Today 10:37

Yes - men all dress similaly with dark suits, light shirts. Or if it's a scottish wedding, loads of kilts. I suppose you'd only notice if a man was wearing something really striking like a neon yellow jacket and someone else had the same.

I wasn't talking about the same wedding dress as another bride - there are rarely two brides at the same wedding. And rarely exactly the same set of guests at two weddings.

To reiterate - both matching guests looked great in the dress which really was lovely. High street, but not M&S, Next more your Oliver Bonas, COS, All Saints type brand.

My aunt showed up in basically the same outfit as the hotel staff at a wedding in the 80s. Exact same colour dress and length and same coloured blazer. She was mortified.

JustAnotherWhinger · Today 10:49

DH’s cousin and I now chat before any family events after 2 weddings and a 50th where we rocked up on the same dresses.

We both used to laugh that as we’re both short and fat there was limited options.

I’ve lost 11 stone and she’s lost 6 stone. We have way more options open to us clothes wise and yet when we were discussing an upcoming wedding last week we both sent a pic of a dress we’d seen and, once again, it was the same one 😂

Bourneyesterday · Today 10:52

This wouldn't bother me at all. I'm not trying to look unique when I get dressed for a wedding. I just want something I look good in.

autumn1610 · Today 10:54

Yep I did I hated it and luckily she was brides family and my partner was grooms friend so it wasn’t like our circles mixed.

Henriettina · Today 10:56

My mum is an identical twin, and on several occasions has turned up in the same outfit as her sister, totally accidentally. They have similar taste and obviously suit the same stuff.

They compare notes now!

Yetone · Today 10:57

I did turn up at a wedding and someone was wearing the same dress as me in a different colour way. We chatted about it. The dress was from LKBennet so a while ago.

Motheranddaughter · Today 11:33

It wouldn’t bother me in the slightest

PineappleCoconut · Today 11:40

yes, identical Monsoon dresses.
we laughed, and said we’d come as extra bridesmaids. And took a photo together with the bride.

strawberry12345 · Today 11:44

Yes! Same dress from Monsoon - we thought it was funny! My friend the bride had decided not to have bridesmaids but in the end posed with us for a few pics with her fake bridesmaids! No one got cross

One of my friends came in the exact same dress as my bridesmaids. (But in a different colour) We found it hilarious. And she had bought and shown me the dress before I even bought the bridesmaids dresses!!

So you’re saying you knowingly chose your bridesmaids dresses to be the same as hers and don’t tell her?

LaliqueSaltGrinder · Today 11:48

She'd probably forgotten about the dress her friend had chosen.

ABitFab · Today 11:49

What fun embrace it!! Take some pics.

i did once at a black tie engagement party. We complimented each other on our taste!

No I had no clue! She showed me hers on the hanger it was a light blue colour. About 6 months later I bought the same dress in pale pink for my bridesmaids not realising .

Krevlornswath · Today 12:07

Yes this happened to me last summer - but honestly was a non event for me. The other person also seemed to just find it amusing, we took a photo together.

I tend to just buy or re-use the easiest/most affordable option when attending weddings and am not overly interested in fixating on my own outfit or making a style impact - I just want to crack on with the day and not cost myself a fortune. When you buy things from the high street and it's current stock or something that was popular, I think there's a good chance you will be in the same outfit as someone else at some point.

Stickthatupyourdojo · Today 12:14

Yes around 8 years ago, lovely dress from ASOS. She was a relative of the groom and my husband is a relative of the bride. I made a friendly joke about it to her at the bar but she looked furious. I don’t understand why as she wasn’t in the wedding party and I’d say we were a similar age, dress size and level of attractiveness yet also didn’t look alike and had completely different accessories so it’s not like I “wore it better” or we were twinning.

PinkMagnoliaTree · Yesterday 23:39

Not now but yes in the 80's I was about 15 and wore a dress to a party that was also worn by someone else. She literally was giving me evil eyes all night! I was 15 and my mum bought my dress 😂😂

This is how me and my besty became friends. We were 13 , didn’t like each other at all . Went back to school in September and both had the same hideous coat from Dunnes. Sure matched up to me bold as Brass and shouted “you copied me!!”. I just looked at her shocked and went “ you actually chose this coat?! My nan bought mine and I hate it.” Well would you believe it. There were TWO nans in our shitty little town with a penchant for flammable viscose vomit pattern costs to torture their grandchildren with over the guise of “helping”. We are still besties 32 years on and I have an alert set up on eBay so I can not the same cost of I ever see it just to really piss her off again . Bonos points if I can find one for me AND one for her

Duvetdayneeded · Today 12:30

Went to a club once and someone else had the same dress on as me. Thankfully my dress obviously fit a lot better than hers so not so bad for me.

SometimesThingsHappen · Today 12:31

Yes, in 2008. We saw each other in the bathroom, said "nice dress", then continued on with our night. I think it was Phase 8 from memory.

Why on earth would anyone make a drama out of wearing the same dress?

DisorganisedMummyTurningOrgnaised · Today 12:33

Yes, we’d brought them from different countries so the odds are crazy small! It’s why I now bring a spare outfit to weddings…

KrazyboutKillian · Today 12:36

I once had the same outfit , it was the late 80s , a fliwy skirt and a loose matching jacket with a cream cami underneath ,
a girl walked in , with the exact outfit
except I was 6 months pregnant and she wasn’t
she was mortified , but to her credit styled it out and came over to say hello
