Anyone turned up at a wedding in the same outfit as another guest?

We were at a wedding last weekend and there were two guests wearing the same (very nice) striped handkerchief hem dress. They spent the whole day avoiding each other.

Lots of discussion among other guests about how turning up in the same dress as someone else was a real risk in the 80s or early 90s where there was limited choice on the high street.

But nowadays, what's the chances?

One of my friends came in the exact same dress as my bridesmaids. (But in a different colour) We found it hilarious. And she had bought and shown me the dress before I even bought the bridesmaids dresses!!

Not now but yes in the 80's I was about 15 and wore a dress to a party that was also worn by someone else. She literally was giving me evil eyes all night! I was 15 and my mum bought my dress 😂😂

Every chance - Phsse 8 and Hobbs being the main problem shops!

I nearly ended up with the same wedding dress as my now ex SIL. She was getting married to DH’s brother a couple of months before me. She didn’t want me to see the dress before her wedding and told that wedding dress shop my name and told them they weren’t allowed to tell me what dress she had picked. SIL and I were very different personalities, body shape etc. When I went into that wedding dress shop the only dress I liked in the shop was my SIL’s! It took me awhile to realise why the shop owner kept saying I wasn’t allowed to try that particular dress on without telling me the reason 😂

I got my dress from somewhere else and never let on to my SIL that I had seen her dress before her wedding

Yes, and we were next to each other on the seating plan

Been to a wedding where three ladies wore the same next trouser suit. They thought it was hilarious and took a photo of themselves together.

Even worse I turned up with my daughter in the same colour dress as the bridesmaids and matching hair accessories! Everyone kept asking her if she enjoyed being a bridesmaid 🙈

At my sister's wedding, one of her friends and I were wearing the same dress, but in different colours. I knew the friend, as we were all at the same school, so we just had a bit of a laugh when we realised and carried on with the day.

Yes. Three women turned up to my friend’s wedding in the same dress. They didn’t know each other but were firm friends by the end of the evening. There are some lovely photos. One of the best weddings I’ve ever been to - we all had SO much fun.

In the 1980s when Evans outsize was the only shop that did plus size in a town could be very common I know women in my family would compare dresses to make sure they had different ones .also did not help they sold very few nice dresses most were mini tents

LoveheartBear · Today 01:40

Yep, me 😁! It was a small wedding, and myself and a lady I didn’t know turned up in the same Coast dress. She didn’t look overly happy 😬🤭.

I unknowingly committed the worst faux pas by turning up in an outfit very similar to Mother of the Bride. Jaeger did a collection a few years ago that the fabric consisted of a dark cream background with very large black circles on. They did a dress, a jacket, a skirt in all the same fabric. I bought a short edge to edge jacket to wear over a simple black dress. The MotB had the patterned dress and jacket. I was mortified and I did feel somewhat uncomfortable. That said there was no way of knowing any of this prior to the wedding.

Yes my mum did once. It was a Karen Millen dress I think. I think the other woman was about 20 years younger than her as well so it didn’t make her feel great.

At my BIL's wedding my 8 year old daughter's dress was pretty much identical to the one worn by the aunt of the bride.

Did you style it out and compliment her on her amazing taste, @Phonicshaskilledmeoff ?

I think it's the only thing to do 💕

Mother of the bride and mother of the groom turned up in almost identical outfits, in the same colour but different accessories. My friend (motg) had shown her prospective DiL her outfit way before her mum had gone shopping for hers but failed to tell her mum about the similarities. In the photos they look identical. Ironically the following year the same friend went to another wedding where the motg and she were wearing the same dress but in different colours.

It happened to me at a party. The other girl was furious with me. It was decades ago but I have never forgotten her fury as it was a farewell party for her leaving for medical school. The dress was a 20s style so very noticeable. Mine was a size 8 and hers an 18, so it did emphasise the difference. I felt awful. She never spoke to me again.

Glad I wasn’t at that wedding. It sounds like being back at school. And now you’re posting about it.

Is this bitchy girls morning? Any need to mention the sizes?

Like I said, decades ago I can totally understand it happening as we were all shopping in person, in physical stores ands not online, stock was summer/spring or winter/autumn and there weren't new lines coming in all the time. When I was 17ish my choices of places to shop for a big event for a wedding were Chelsea Girl, Littlewoods, BHS or Marks and Spencer. So higher probability of picking the same thing as other people.

Now with SO much choice in person and online you'd think it was unusual but apparently not! I would also understand the coincidence more if the event had a very specific theme but this wedding did not.

I would take lots of twin photos with her if this happened! Only a shame if one looks much better in it

My sister worked in a large department store in a mall . There was a bridal shop in the mall. A colleague purchased a dress that was in the window and got a great deal . Another girl heard about it and went to the shop to order it also. The shop owner didn't want to get it for her as many guests would be crossover and the other work colleagues told her that it was a shite thing to do . She went to another shop in a different town and got it anyway . The original bride was very annoyed about it.

My cousin went to a friend's wedding to see the bride in the dress she had chosen for her own wedding in six months . Luckily she was able to change it .

HermioneWeasley · Today 10:17

It’s crazy isn’t it - men are all wearing basically the same thing and nobody would notice, comment or care if 2 men wore the same suit, it’s about women being somehow in competition with each other.

I once wore a dress the EXACT shade of blue of the bridesmaids. It was mortifying, but fortunately the bride found it funny and asked me to join them for a photo.
