What do you do with your nails? Come tell me, even if it’s nothing.

I used to have BIAB regularly but stopped this year for a variety of reasons.

I have been painting them myself. They chip too quickly, literally two, three days. I have used top coats, I’ve given plenty of drying time between coats, a few different brands of polish and I cannot get any longer out of them.

So now I am thinking maybe it’s not realistic to think I can have painted nails continuously and I need to do something else.

What do you do with your nails?

Nothing. I have no trouble get them but can’t be bothered doing anything with them as any polish chips easily and that looks terrible. I get gel on my toes in summer though.

I use cuticle remover every few weeks and gently push them back with an orange stick. I don't believe in messing about with them too much - those Russian manicures aren't good. Oh, and I go easy on buffing. Shiny nails are lovely but too much weakens them.

Does gel polish ruin nails?

untamedheart · Today 00:44

I vary between nothing and doing my own polish (just standard nail polish)
toes are always painted - currently holographic!

Giraffehaver · Today 01:38

I have gel polish once my nails get ratty. Started in Feb and love them. Atm each nail is a different colour

JBJ · Today 01:44

Nothing, just cut them. Hate how they feel with any nail polish etc on. Yet, bizarrely, I’m fine with it on my toes.

Lostsadandconfused · Today 01:49

Stick ons. They come in an unlimited variety of shapes and colours, are super cheap and last 2-3 weeks.

I have a professional pedi every 6 weeks or so.

WhatNextImScared · Today 01:52

Nothing.! bite them and have done for 35 years. I can’t stop, have tried literally everything.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · Today 01:56

Gels at a salon every three weeks.

StripedPillowcase · Today 02:06

Clip/cut once a week, use hand cream daily, deal with any snaggy bits. I occasionally get one that splits, and might use clear nail varnish to stop it splitting any more until the problem grows out.
I can't function with nails much longer than the picture - makes me feel like I'm 'clacking' on everything.

I don't do much with mine, sometimes if they're even and longish I paint them a pearl/french manicure colour

I don't like bright colours on fingernails

Anna20MFG · Today 02:22

Nothing at all. Cut or file if they get too long. Play Irish fiddle so need them short on the left hand but they are for function only as far as I am concerned.

Fluffyhoglets · Today 02:29

I've just stopped biting mine after many years! Such a hard habit to break! At the moment I'm keeping them short, moisturised and just with a bit of clear shiny nail strengthener. They are very fragile and ridged after decades of being chomped and skin picked ' and I caught myself picking dry skin again the other day. So just trying to keep them healthy for now.
My toenails I paint in the summer only.

Squirrelchops1 · Today 02:35

I'm currently using Active Shine polish from Manucurist but it's also a treatment. I got this in my Look Fantastic box. It's great as is protecting my nails and looks smart.

Cheesecakeisnotforme · Today 02:56

I occasionally file / bite or (on my non-dominant hand) cut them. That's all.

Beekman · Today 03:12

Gels every few weeks at a salon. Vary the colour depending on what I like on the day i always have them removed professionally so there is minimal damage. Gels have come on a lot in the 20 years they’ve been widely available.

I hated during Covid when I couldn’t get them done but doing my own toenails was worse.

Which brand of cuticle remover? I file mine but don’t use cuticle oil and hardly ever push back cuticles although I should. I paint them very occasionally but they chip after a day or so! I used to bite mine but stopped eventually.

Stick ons from Glaize. Cannot recommend highly enough. I get 10-12 days out of them. Once you understand how to apply them, they are so easy, damage free and look great. Literally bought all friends and family a set for birthdays this year as I love them so much!!

Overtheatlantic · Today 05:02

I just have a professional manicure every 3 weeks and use a light pink nail polish. They are short but they look nice. Otherwise I will pick at them and create hangnails.

marriednotdead · Today 05:08

My nails are small and the skin will peel painfully below the cuticle if I try to do anything to them, even filing, which affects me at work.. They also break easily so I clip then as neatly as I can to just above the tip of my fingers. Occasionally I put clear polish on them to make them look a bit less awful.
Fortunately my feet are fine so I keep my toenails painted.

2 hours?!?! What was she doing for that long?? I have BIAB every 2-3 weeks. In and out in 45mins.

2 hours is pretty standard

2 weeks is really early to come back for an infill

It's usually if you are in and out the tech has not been thorough with prep so your nails won't last as long

Pickledonions12 · Today 06:01

I'd really like advice about (vertical) ridged nails. Mine have been ridged for 5 years. If I use the polish for ridges they look a bit better but not much. I've tried everything I can think of to get the ridges to grow out but no luck

LeapyearLoser · Today 06:48

Chemotherapy ruined my nails, they became paper thin and brittle. 7 years post treatment I began BIAB found it so boring 90 minutes of meaningless small talk is not for me, but it improved my nails to the point of I now go to the local cash only nail shop for 30 mins of silent men, applying gel colour every month.
I go for boring matt colours, no twinkly art work, but I am considering the chrome white as it looks so good 🤣

FriedaClaxton · Today 06:51

I have BIAB every three weeks. I usually go for something bright with a pattern. The lady who does my nails is so talented, a real artist.

Tiddlywinks63 · Today 06:57

Gels and BIAB wrecked my nails so I keep them short and clean, sometimes I apply a clear or very pale polish.
