Jacket ideas for an apple shape with wide-leg trousers

Apple shape looking for ideas for jackets for work. I tend to wear trousers, wide legged, but I find jackets, unless shorter, swamp me and make me look even bigger. Is there any other option? I think i need fitted but not accentuating stomach. Any tips?

I love that - thanks! Always a sucker for a bit of Victoriana ... (thought not sure about it with my boobs either - but I can try!).

I’ve got the H&M version of that. It’s amazing value for money - the seams are bound, it’s beautifully cut and it looks a million dollars on.

It’s the denim one I’ve got. I’m so pleased with it. I think they’ve messed the pricing up because I’d have happily paid Toast prices for it.

I actually like the Toast one above too ... plus am a bit obsessed with quite a number of Massimo Dutti jackets right now. Only seen online & am staying away from the store ....

@SoScarletItWas what sort of colours would you pick? I tend to either wear all cream, or all navy, or sometimes dabble in yellow brown tones. Would a black jacket work? im a cool winter

The M&S one is a bit heavy-looking for summer? I'd agree with @SoScarletItWas that yellowy-browns are probably not a great colour for you. But what about greyish-browns/taupes? Also not just navy but strong blues/grey-blues, cool reds/burgundies, & forest/emerald/teal greens?

Or would you prefer neutrals? In that case taupe/navy/greige?

@Loopylooni - these are all from Massimo Dutti. Some are a bit dressier, some more casual. But the shapes & colours would all potentially work for your shape, I think, from what I can see of them online. I may be trying a few of these myself, as I'm also busty size 16 with a stomach!

I think you need to do a try-on session!!!

These ones are all off-white/cool-ish beige tones. The second beige one has a really nice sleeve detail (shown front & back photos).

Some more Massimo Dutti ones. Including a red & a green one!

There are also some Massimo Dutti blazers that might work. You're relatively tall, so it depends (as a couple of PPs have already mentioned) on where the bottom hits you. The second two may be too long though.

I know fashion wisdom says shorter jackets go with wide leg trousers if you’re not super slim, but I am going to be controversial and say I don’t think it always works.

The short, boxy jackets in vogue currently don’t necessarily flatter the big of tum or the ‘not 21 anymore’. The nipped in, tailored short jackets give you a waist, but can accentuate a tummy.

I think a longer line open front blazer or soft, thinner jacket of some description can be more flattering. Something more like This
which yoj could make very smart with flats and accessories, or dress down with tucked in t-shirt or even untucked drapey blouse or shirt. The key is to find a blazer that is longer length but not ‘oversized’.

*Depends also on the waist of your trousers (are they high waist or mid waist? Flat front or with darts?) and whether you are tucking your top in or not.

Edited

I agree with this OP.

I’m the same shape and always go for a collarless style, short to mid length. Also maybe try a knitted jacket or biker style; there are loads about.

Hi @Loopylooni
I'm an apple too, and top heavy with broad shoulders, 5' 9", 16 bottom, 20+ top 😕

The days of skinny jeans and jeggings are over, thank goodness 😅thought I looked okay at the time... looked more like a tin of beans (or a tank) balanced on a couple of skinny parsnips 😂

I love wide leg trousers. And they do look good with trainers!

Have bought some wide leg trousers this season for work, from Primark. Oops, Primark is doubtless a swear word chez mumsnet...

But, the trousers are easily long enough for me (which isn't always the case) and they sell a matching top. And I'll wear them for more than one summer.

Got 2 pairs of trousers (£10 each), one top. Mix and match sizes, so trousers in large, top in 2XL, all in black.

I have a couple of linen/linen-mix jackets from Poetry that I can wear on top in summer. They're shortish - not near hip length, but a bit lower than waist.

Poetry is a bit of an expensive brand (for me, anyway!) but their clothes are beautifully cut and made with gorgeous fabrics. While they aren't exactly closely tailored, they give me the feeling of being smartly dressed for work.

I saw, or read, something, somewhere about dressing in thirds, so a shorter jacket in a contrasting colour/pattern worn over all one colour underneath is a good thing, apparently🤞
