Jacket ideas for an apple shape with wide-leg trousers

Apple shape looking for ideas for jackets for work. I tend to wear trousers, wide legged, but I find jackets, unless shorter, swamp me and make me look even bigger. Is there any other option? I think i need fitted but not accentuating stomach. Any tips?

Size? Height? Degree of formality? Budget?

(And where have you already looked / where do you usually shop?)

I’m a similar shape and have found that softer fabric works better. There are loads to choose from on the Next website but I’d go for a cropped one with either no collar or a one button without pockets that you can wear open with a fitted top.

Soft collarless as suggested by pp. If you’re short this could sit a bit too long but worth trying. I’ve picked the Stone as it’s shown with wide legs but there are loads of colours

@SoScarletItWas such cool ideas, so very appreciated

Hey @TheFarriersDaughter , size 16/18, 38G, weight more on stomach, height 5ft 7, budget £100, I like cool casual as im in media.

For example I wore wide legged trousers, microfiber top but a cos cropped jacket, hoka trainers. Looked in the mirror and although trousers/top looked good, the rest didnt.

Also self conscious to take off any jacket as I hate my stomach.

@SoScarletItWas do you think this would accentuate my stomach?

This is what I have and it just doesnt seem to work with wide trousers

I think your Uniqlo jacket is too oversized and boxy. There’s no definite line at your middle to work with the flowing wider trousers underneath.

The width of the trucker jacket (the what now?!) could work as it sits wider than your body and makes it therefore look slimmer than the jacket. That’s the effect my ancient LK Bennett swing cropped jacket has, at least to my eye!

I like this but not the colour or even buttons! You're fantastic!

Ooh nice. I reckon it would. They show it with wide legs.

I wear a lot of wide legs and am resisting buying 16 jackets I don’t need off the back of this thread 🤣

I think where I go wrong is the jacket, trainers and uniqlo cross bag. id like to look more stylish!

Try swapping the trainers for pointed flats. They work with wide legs and will lift the whole outfit a bit.

The cross body bag is useful but so over done these days it’s boring. And I always think more casual than work. Don’t ask me what to use instead as I check everything in a massive Le Pliage on my office days!

Loopylooni · Yesterday 08:56

@SoScarletItWas you're probably right about the cross body, I wear mine daily on the school run but im beginning to think it just cuts me in half! I have so many gorgeous bags!

I had plantar faschtis ages ago and am scared of getting it so was in trainers. Would plain Stan Smiths work instead of colourful Hokas?

@SoScarletItWas what sort of colours would you pick? I tend to either wear all cream, or all navy, or sometimes dabble in yellow brown tones. Would a black jacket work? im a cool winter

@Loopylooni I’m a cool winter too! And never found a yellow or brown that suited me; too gold/warm against my pale blue skin.

This is very much a me thing but I like to dress one one tone too and bottom. So I have a few navy jackets as they go with jeans and navy trousers / skirts. I’m not personally keen on a cream jacket and, say, brown trousers even though the tone matches - I don’t like breaking up my ‘line’ with differs colours. I DO think that can be useful if you need to wear a particular colour close to your face and your bottoms colour isn’t great against your skin. Just a me thing about the ‘line’ but it feels more put together to me.

Re Stan Smiths I don’t have them but have I read they suit a more narrow foot due to the rounded toe box? Not sure!

A different coloured top under an open/edge-to-edge jacket will break up the 'block' of colour and make you look slimmer

BitDrizzly · Yesterday 11:21

I know fashion wisdom says shorter jackets go with wide leg trousers if you’re not super slim, but I am going to be controversial and say I don’t think it always works.

The short, boxy jackets in vogue currently don’t necessarily flatter the big of tum or the ‘not 21 anymore’. The nipped in, tailored short jackets give you a waist, but can accentuate a tummy.

I think a longer line open front blazer or soft, thinner jacket of some description can be more flattering. Something more like This
which yoj could make very smart with flats and accessories, or dress down with tucked in t-shirt or even untucked drapey blouse or shirt. The key is to find a blazer that is longer length but not ‘oversized’.

*Depends also on the waist of your trousers (are they high waist or mid waist? Flat front or with darts?) and whether you are tucking your top in or not.
