M&S gladiator sandals

Are these awful? I really like them however my DC physically recoiled when I tried them on, they are slouchy teens so I kind of get it. I thought they were kind of cool and would be nice dressed up (flippy short skirt) or down (denim shorts). Gladiators

They are foul. They aren’t even modelled on a person so must be unflattering even on the models.

Teaforthetotal · 12/06/2026 07:06

I loved gladiators when they were in trend about 15-20 years ago but just not liking the revival this time round.Even the better versions other posters have found are not doing it.

Userengage · 12/06/2026 07:16

I have got the long, slim legs that some have mentioned but it seems like a resounding no to gracing them with these sandals. Back they go.

I’ve never had a less divided thread!

Good grief, that’s a lot of vitriol about a sandal.

Slothlydoesit · 12/06/2026 07:49

I agree they are horrible. Don’t get them!

However the posters who are laughing at ‘invalids’ in Victorian times wearing ‘calipers’… children today with cerebral palsy still have to wear splints. My child is disabled. At his school, where all of the children have disabilities, there are all kinds of orthotic footwear worn. I’m pretty sure they’d prefer not to. It’s not at all funny to laugh at other people’s disabilities.

Back to style and beauty however. There are many lovely sandals available but these are not them.

Mindia · 12/06/2026 07:50

I had those in the 80s

Lifelover16 · 12/06/2026 07:55

in my opinion they look cheap and ugly.
I can feel the blisters forming just by looking at them.
However, I’m not very fashionable, and it’s you who might be wearing then, so if you like them and they suit your style I don’t see why not.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 12/06/2026 07:57

Good god no. Unless you’re a Roman centurion or acting/extra in a Roman film.

BIossomtoes · 12/06/2026 10:02

I imagine there will be a lot of those reduced to a tenner.

fiveflames · 12/06/2026 10:08

I thought the point of sandals was to keep cool when it’s hot. Why would you want that piece of plastic up the back of your leg? I don’t like them personally.

TheChosenTwo · 12/06/2026 10:12

Phew, glad to see they’re being returned!
On the plus side, if you have second thoughts further down the line, console yourself with the knowledge that when they appear in the bargain basement sale they will definitely still be there in your size but for a third of the price!

I agree. It's "Suzy Quatro's fat nan" syndrome. The same way jacquard dresses look like "my Nan's sofa" or bold floral is "my Nan's curtains" (other elderly female relatives are available)

Or the posters who seem to think "looks like an art teacher /librarian" is somehow undesirable.

And then there's the old faithfuls - Grayson Perry, Quakers and Handmaid's Tale.

The sandals are very ugly and look a lot cheaper than they are.

Have you seen the film Notes on a Scandal, where Cate Blanchett played an art teacher called Sheba, befriended (& envied, & betrayed) by Judi Dench's older lonely teacher? I LOVED her wardrobe & look at the time - it was bohemian art teacher perfection!!!

I've never understood the recurrent use of "the art teacher look" as a put down for one of the many MN fashion sins either. People in the arts are often as creative in their dressing as in their work. Maybe it's fear - a fear of looking different ...?

Anyway, I would happily take looking like a "plump art teacher" (the comment on another thread about a dress I loved) as a compliment!!

Ibi · 12/06/2026 10:40

Think of the amazing tan lines you’ll get!!

Alittlefrustrated · 12/06/2026 10:55

The back is awful and the front should be criss crossed.
I had some gorgeous ones about 35 years ago.

Comtesse · 12/06/2026 11:04

I like the Clarks ones more, they look pretty wearable.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 12/06/2026 11:08

The ones which don’t have the stupid bit up the calf are slightly better. Michael kors and pucci (cba to link) do similar high up leg straps/buckled ones, pucci just over £1,320 if you want to treat yourself.

Calliopespa · 12/06/2026 11:09

I don't mind gladiators but those look more like some variety of kink dressing.

I could eat M and S food till I popped but I never think much of their shoes.

The pucci ones fit the bill too as they’re kinky. If I could get Russell Crowe as Maximus in Gladiator in real life then I’ll wear them and dust off my cat o nine tails for good measure. 😉

Love that film but when people say “art teacher” I always think of a man rather than a woman. Jacket with leather elbow patches vibe

Thebigonesgetaway · 12/06/2026 11:29

There is a reason you can’t see these on a model, they are not good.

Damn I'm working and I missed it!!

Also who is Suzy Quatros' fat nan and why does MN always reference her?

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 12/06/2026 12:05

I have no idea why anyone would chose to wear gladiator sandals. They look awful and uncomfortable.
If you like them then they are no worse than any other gladiator sandals.

It was a deeply unfunny and depressing thread with posters listing all sorts of ridiculous reasons why they couldn't wear ordinary everyday garments without looking like SQ's fat Nan, or Inspector Bucket, because you know only tall, willowy, size 8 models under the age of 25 look good in, well almost every piece of clothing made.

The deleted post pointed out how hyperbolic the "invalid Victorian child" simile was. And I agree with Slothlydoesit, it's not funny.
