Beauty and hair help!

I had my hair cut short a couple of weeks ago - I'm 63. I like the convenience, but now I'm in frumpy mode. How can I look less frumpy, and sorry, manly. I'm slim and do wear makeup. Should I get a colour put on, I'd quite like blonder but never coloured my hair before, and I'm 30% grey now at the sides and temples.
Should I wear more makeup? Would this soften me? I really like the cut but HELP!!

And , yes, as others have said...really good quality shirts in lovely colours with nice jewellery can look really sophisticated. Dying it when it goes grey can be a real faff. Id emrace short and grey and invest in sophisticated expensive clothes. A few great pieces can go a long way.

Have you been persuaded by the majority view, @Nordic89?

Juced · Yesterday 08:19

I like the hair maybe define your brows a little more also a bit of blush and mascara makes such a difference and treat yourself to some lovely jewellery...you look like you have kind pretty eyes from what I can tell from the pic 🙂

Some of the responses are quite interesting in a sad way, to be honest.

I’ve had short hair, various types of pixie cuts, for over 40 years. I only ever let my hair grow long for a couple of years when I was a teenager. My hair is thin and very curly/wavy, always has been like that, so I look much better in a short cut. No one had ever suggested I looked old, manly or not feminine especially at 20 or 30! I don’t wear red lipstick (doesn’t suit me), I don’t feel any sudden need to dress up like a French mime to match my short hair, or to get fake eyelashes…

I’m not that old, what has happened to gender norms recently? Since when cutting the hair short makes female people manly? This is a serious question, I’m trying to understand when this has all started.

It used to be quite normal to have short hair, I was never the odd one out at school. I remember being obsessed with Linda Evangelista when I was around 6-7 years old, she had short hair and I thought she looked like a real princess.

You look great OP, your facial features are beautiful and the short haircut frames them really well.

I think your hair looks good on you. I think a brow / lash tint would complete the look. Short hair means there is a lot of 'space' which is the perfect backdrop for some interesting jewellery to be noticed. Something delicate will help soften any masculine vibes (although I think it's fun to switch it up and lean into the butch look sometimes too!)

BlanklyMyDear · Yesterday 09:54

Agree with all of that, @CortieTat - the current culture is totally unrecognisable to me, too.

How anyone could look at the OP’s delicate, pretty face and think ‘masculine vibes’ is a mystery to me.

Your hair is great so personally I would concentrate more on make up. A bit more colour in your brows, some mascara and a good lipstick 💄 as others have said. Nice earrings if your ears are pierced but I wouldn’t go too mad, you don’t want to be labelled “wacky”.

2msoundsright · Yesterday 10:13

Your hair looks great- you have good bone structure so can carry off a crop. Don't dye it blonde.

Yes to experimenting with make up- I can imagine you with something quite distinctive like red lipstick although obv that's a big change if you don't usually wear much. You could also try un-sensible-ising your clothes a bit if you feel too sensible- cropped hair, red lip. silk shirt 😍

JFDIYOLO · Yesterday 10:23

If I'm right and you have blue grey eyes - embrace the silver!!!!

Hair and jewellery alike.

Turquoise, acquamarine, moonstone, sea glass ... Ths is your silver earrings and pendants era

JFDIYOLO · Yesterday 10:24

Depending on whether you're warm or cool toned, lash up the mascara in brownish-black or pure black, and a striking lipstick.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · Yesterday 12:26

I think your hair looks great.
I don’t like long hair on older women. It’s rarely in good condition so looks bad.
I agree about finding some good jewellery. I would actually wear dangly earrings if you like them.
Good advice to visit a make up counter and try on make up. If you are buying lipstick avoid Matt and dark shades.
I recently bought another Dior addict lipstick after asking for advice. It’s a creamy one which suits mature skin.
As for clothes, what type of clothes would you like to buy?
Do you fancy a few new dresses or trousers?
Go in person to somewhere like John Lewis or even M&S and try on. JL even have a stylish you can book if you need more advice.
See what you think.

extrabeans · Yesterday 12:41

I think it looks lovely! 😍

I don't think you look frumpy (horrible word anyway) or manly in the slightest.

What a silly sweeping generalisation. I am an “older woman” and I am blessed with long thick hair that is in great condition and in a style that suits me, thank you very much! I can’t think of any of my friends of a similar age who have cut their hair because they are “older” and none of them have hair that is not in good condition. Maybe because they look after it?

I do agree that the OP’s hair looks good. Anybody’s hair looks good if it is a cut that suits them and their hair is in good nick and they wear makes up and dress accordingly. Just saying have your hair short because you are “older” is a load of bollocks imo 😆

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · Yesterday 12:52

I’m not interested in whether you have short hair.
In my opinion the op’s hair looks fine, some posters have suggested she should grow it which I don’t agree with.
I think longer hair suits young women much better than older women and you are not going to change my opinion on that.
You have also stated that hair looks good if a woman wears make up!
Now who’s being ridiculous?
Nobody needs to wear make up at all.

And I am not telling the op to go and get her long hair cut short either. Can’t you read?

I wasn’t clear about the make up. I mean if you are styled generally in a way that makes you look and feel good. In yourself ( I agree no one needs to wear make up) What I mean is, short or long hair doesn’t matter at any age as long as the person in question feels good and the cut suits them. I do agree, if you read my post, that the OP’s hair looks good, which fits with me saying that if a style suits your face it’s the right one for you personally. I was taking issue with you saying that long hair doesn’t look good on older women. Different women suit different hairstyles, regardless of age

And yes I know you weren’t telling the OP to get her hair cut. I don’t believe I said you were. There was no need for that snippy comment 😊
