I had my hair cut short a couple of weeks ago - I'm 63. I like the convenience, but now I'm in frumpy mode. How can I look less frumpy, and sorry, manly. I'm slim and do wear makeup. Should I get a colour put on, I'd quite like blonder but never coloured my hair before, and I'm 30% grey now at the sides and temples.
Should I wear more makeup? Would this soften me? I really like the cut but HELP!!

Hoop earrings! Or chunky/colourful earrings.

I love women with super short/buzzcut/pixie hair, but earrings do help to keep it feminine.

I agree about cropped styles making women no nonsense sensible. I sit on the bus and look at other women (I like to observe how women put themselves together) and I'm amazed by the amount of older women with those short crops. It has a 'I'm past it' vibe, which is fine if that's what you want to communicate. . I agree about also about beautiful earrings, and a nice lipstick ..

What nonsense. No need to even consider what any man might think when some other women come out with garbage like this. Your prejudice is awful.

The haircut is fabulous and really suits you. When you find a hairdresser who knows how to cut short hair well, stick with them! I agree that brow definition and mascara will help.

Blonde highlights would also look lovely and could be done in a very natural, sun-kissed way if that appeals?

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 10/06/2026 13:13

Past it? I first chopped my hair off at 17...

I've worn mine short forever. Maybe I've been past it since my early 20s?

BlanklyMyDear · 10/06/2026 13:19

I’ve been past it for six decades! 😂😂😂

Great haircut. Don’t dye it, it suits you. Too many women dye their hair a colour that doesn’t work with their skin tone.

Agree Sharon Stone and Annette Bening would be good inspo.

My makeup advice would be to keep
it natural and avoid anything too dark or matte. For example Annette Bening in that pic is wearing a fairly bright lipstick but in a very soft, satin texture and it looks great.

Earrings are a minefield. Do you wear glasses? Don’t wear earrings just to make yourself look more ‘feminine’.

Allseeingallknowing · 10/06/2026 13:47

Not frumpy at all- I have a similar hairstyle

PinkEasterbunny · 10/06/2026 14:33

I'd be tempted to add some highlights ......

Nonsense. Nothing makes a woman look more past it than thin!straight lank long hair. My hair had thinned, it’s fine and flat if left to grow. As a PP suggested, I keep mine short and manageable, feathery layers, highlighted and trimmed regularly. I bet I look far better with this style than with long hair. I don’t look frumpy or masculine at the advanced age of 78!

This is after trip to hairdresser. Normally I wash and go , spray it with some root boost spray and run my fingers through it

It might help to add some styling products, something to add texture and shine to your hair.
I think you'd suit a great red lipstick, glowy foundation or moisturiser, nice cream blush.

Groomed eyebrows always help me feel more put together and feminine.

Same with subtle nails, I love Manucurist for their "active" range - I have them in active glow, active shine and active smooth options.

MrsCarmelaSoprano · 10/06/2026 14:49

A cool toned pink lipstick will look amazing. It suits you and not manly at all.

I think a lot of people are missing the point. It's not that short hair in itself gives off a past-it vibe. It's that certain short cuts at certain times of life need to be styled carefully so they don't give off the overly sensible vibe. And if you haven't noticed women like this it may be because they are fairly invisible stylistically.

A pixie cut and floral dress can look adorable on a slim fresh-faced woman. But if you're at a stage in life where you are a bit heavier and jowly, then a severe crop and floral dress screams 'I am too busy helping out at church/with the grandkids to think about how I look.'

OP wants to avoid looking frumpy or manly. Sensible cropped haircuts can give off those vibes. My mum now in her nineties has a gorgeous bob and looks younger and more stylish than in her fifties when she went for that sensible chop.

I'm not saying OPs haircut is bad - I'm saying I understand her concern.

No one is suggesting OP swaps her crop for thin straight lank long hair. Other styles are available.

You are. With some very odd views about short hair. Out of interest, what do you think long hair signifies? Or curly hair?

What's wrong with looking sensible? Your choice of words is interesting. What you actually mean is that you don't think short on woman looks feminine/attractive/girlish or whatever. There's no hope when other women spout this crap!

Most of the women I know who have pixie style hair whether they are older or very young have one thing in common & that is a very pretty face. The OP has the bone structure for this style. There is nothing overtly sensible or past it about the pixie cut as many beautiful older & younger celebrities prove such as Judy Dench, Emma watson & many more. OP you look great. I would add statement earings & emphasise your eyes & brows with stronger than usual make-up without being too heavy.

ScribblingPixie · 10/06/2026 16:28

Oh I think it looks great as you are - a good lipstick and maybe some silver earrings/necklace is all you need if you want to do more..

This is an anonymous S and B forum. The OP was asking for aesthetic opinions, I gave one Long hair? depends on who and how it is styled. Curly hair? ditto. Clean hair,? dirty hair, straight hair.....Hair can add or detract from a woman's beauty..

Nothing wrong with looking sensible if that's what you want. I am so bloody tired of being sensible. I want to add a bit more zest to my wardrobe as I grow older. It's just a matter of taste.

Roco11 · 11/06/2026 19:06

I think it looks chic. You have the look of walk past and say to my friend, who also has short hair, ooh I love her style 💕
You could possibly consider getting your eyebrows and lashes tinted (or a more permanent microblading / lip blush) if you wanted a more polished look. But honestly you look great x

Forgotten what I was going to say!
