Hello,

opinions needed!!

trying to choose between…
free people maxi swishy cotton dress (love it and feels like “me” but possibly not 💯 flattering)

www.urbanoutfitters.com/en-gb/shop/free-people-ultraviolet-maxi-dress

or

stylecheat maxi pink halterneck extreme polyester - feels a bit “cheap” but looks surprisingly good on?

stylecheat.com/products/luisa-pleated-dress-ombre?_pos=6&_sid=d31a30220&_ss=r

for a hip Summer wedding in London. I’m 46 and petite.

hit me with your brutally honest views!!

thank you

I much prefer the second option with the two tone pink skirt. It looks more "wedding-y". The first option is a lovely dress too but from the front doesn't look that special, all the design is in the back.

minipie · 06/06/2026 21:41

I agree the first one is not smart enough unless it’s a very casual wedding.

HoldMyWine · 06/06/2026 21:45

1st one is too casual for a wedding, 2nd one is lovely

Chiapotayto · 06/06/2026 21:46

First dress isn’t really wedding guest style. More a casual summer dress.

Second one gets my vote for that reason.

FortyFacedFuckers · 06/06/2026 21:51

2nd one is gorgeous

JustGiveMeReason · 06/06/2026 22:29

Agree with everyone else, the 2nd one is much better for a wedding.

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 06/06/2026 22:54

Of the two definitely the second. First one is way too casual IMO

LadyGAgain · 06/06/2026 23:59

2nd one is beautiful. By contrast the 1st feels really quite ugly.

7238SM · 07/06/2026 00:04

1st one is just a summer, cotton dress.

2nd one is more formal and wedding suitable, but the polyester in summer would be dreadful. Is the venue air conditioned?

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 07/06/2026 00:05

2nd one is ok if you are under 25, otherwise it’s bridesmaid look. I don’t think it’s smart. Depends on the quality of the wedding though. Are people fashionable and looking expensive or looking like a fairy godmother? Neither are great.

PhaedraTwo · 07/06/2026 00:35

The second one is awful and is about as far from "hip summer wedding in London" as I could imagine.

I don't like open backs so the first one isn't for me but the more I look at I'm warming to it.

"too casual for a wedding" is appearing a lot. I wondered what the "too casual" crowd would think was suitable. It appears to be something in polyester that you couldn't wear anywhere than to a wedding. I'd refuse to go if I were forced to wear the second one.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 07/06/2026 05:54

The 2nd one.

Bananananna · 07/06/2026 07:03

The first one makes the model look bigger so clearly not a flattering fit. I think you need to have a good back with a dress like that, there’s so much of it on show (which you may well have). But what bra would you wear with it?

The second one is not my cup of tea at all.

what sort of venue is it?

Tocsin · 07/06/2026 07:22

First is cute, though the colours are a teeny bit drab for a wedding.

Second is frankly nasty. Replacement frock for an abandoned 1970s doll found in a skip.

Tbh neither is my idea of hip Summer wedding but I imagine you know your milieu better than I do.

DopamineDeficient · 07/06/2026 07:28

Love the second one.

buddy79 · 07/06/2026 08:10

😂😂
thanks so much everyone, some amazing comments on here!!
It has helped somewhat 😂😂

”fairy godmother” made me laugh a lot. Perhaps I’ll just lean into the look 😂😂

It’s town hall and then big reception in a hipster pub I think, so it could be quite casual
but I don’t want to offend anyone by being too casual!! And I never get to dress up
and I want to!
I’’m not sure either are quite right tbh but food for thought!!
thank you

First one, no question.

The pink one looks cheap and nasty. Personally I can't stand that shade of pink but I can accept that tastes differ, what tips it over the edge is the dreadful sub-tutu design.

Don’t people ever get bored of showing off about how above polyester they are?

I also don’t see what’s wrong with wearing something that looks like you’d wear it to a wedding to… a wedding.

TheSquareMile · 07/06/2026 11:06

@buddy79

How tall are you, OP?

I actually don't mind polyester but there's polyester (most jacquard is polyester and I like and own jacquard) and polyester (the type that just looks like nylon, which this is) and that's the type I wouldn't wear.

By only wear to a wedding I mean the "occasion dress" which would make you look bonkers if you wore it anywhere else. There's loads of dresses which can be dressed up and dressed down and worn on loads of other occasions.

Purplecatshopaholic · 07/06/2026 11:41

Of those two, I’d go with the second. I don’t think the first looks flattering. The second might look cheap in the flesh but if it doesn’t I’d go with it. However I am sure you could do better if you have the time and inclination to go shopping.

luckylavender · 07/06/2026 11:43

Definitely no 2

TeenLifeMum · 07/06/2026 11:49

I love number 2 and now I’m thinking about it for a beach wedding we’re going to. I’m 44 so clearly unaware it’s too young for me because it’s exactly what I’d wear.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 07/06/2026 11:55

@PhaedraTwo It’s perfectly possible to find silk and silk cotton dresses that aren’t cheap netting that look like my dd wore as a 3 year old when she wanted to be a fairy. I don’t know anyone in their 40s who would think that was chic.

It’s perfectly possible to find quality fabrics if you look and some are in the sales already!
