Hello,

opinions needed!!

trying to choose between…
free people maxi swishy cotton dress (love it and feels like “me” but possibly not 💯 flattering)

www.urbanoutfitters.com/en-gb/shop/free-people-ultraviolet-maxi-dress

or

stylecheat maxi pink halterneck extreme polyester - feels a bit “cheap” but looks surprisingly good on?

stylecheat.com/products/luisa-pleated-dress-ombre?_pos=6&_sid=d31a30220&_ss=r

for a hip Summer wedding in London. I’m 46 and petite.

hit me with your brutally honest views!!

thank you

😂 Think you’ve picked the wrong adversary, @MeetMeOnTheCorner!

merryhouse · 07/06/2026 12:08

can you find something like 1 or 3 but not black-based?

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 07/06/2026 12:16

@Tocsin Have I? Ok. The better fabric comment still stands!

@PhaedraTwo It’s perfectly possible to find silk and silk cotton dresses that aren’t cheap netting that look like my dd wore as a 3 year old when she wanted to be a fairy. I don’t know anyone in their 40s who would think that was chic.

It’s perfectly possible to find quality fabrics if you look and some are in the sales already!

Why are you telling me this??

I went with black as it’s a “hipster London wedding” - this is quite a common look! Recommend with some red or gold heels, big earrings and a bright clutch bag.

Yes, you seem to have confused me with, um, not sure who. The second pink dress is awful. And I really, really, really don't need a lecture about fabrics.

The first one definitely, the third possibly. The middle one is dreadful.

🤣🤣🤣 okay fair enough.

corblimeygvnr · 07/06/2026 12:23

It says the first one is no longer available.

BebbanburgIsMine · 07/06/2026 12:24

I like both dresses, but the second one is my favourite of the two.

It’s absolutely gorgeous, beautiful colours.

Ibi · 07/06/2026 14:08

I really don’t like the second one. It wouldn’t be something I would imagine fitting in for the type of wedding you’ve described. The first one is ok, but shirring looks more ‘school fete’ than wedding.

What sort of style do you usually like? Im sure we can find something better.

buddy79 · 07/06/2026 15:51

Thanks so much everyone, it’s quite a funny debate!! 😂
They are very different dresses!!

I’m 5’ 1, I’m little.
The first dress I have loved from afar for ages and one came up in my size on vinted so I snapped it up, but have been disappointed to find it’s not really that flattering.
The second I bought on a whim as I thought it looked fun but the fabric is quite rubbish quality - however the shape does suit me, better than I thought , I’m normally terrified of showing my arms but the cut does work. It’s definitely more “weddingy” but I’m thinking perhaps not for this particular wedding, for someone my age - although part of me also thinks fuck it as it looks good!!
It’s a hotel / big bar reception and people will be wearing all sorts, definitely not traditional!

@PigglyWiggle thank you for those suggestions - I really like the third one, I think I might go and try that on - I think black with colour would be ok for this event and it’s a great pick!!

I’ve got myself in a state where I don’t even know what I like any more ha ha!!
I seem to be stuck in the 2000’s wearing a lot of summer dresses with trainers etc so I wanted something that ups the game a bit. I’m having two nights away for this with my husband which is unheard of, so I really want to feel good and enjoy it!!
But possibly not in either of these dresses 😂😂

thanks everyone!

@buddy79

I think that, at 5ft 1,you will probably suit a dress in which there is less fabric in the skirt, OP. I think that petites can easily be swamped by the extra material.

TheSquareMile · 07/06/2026 16:09

Which colours suit you, OP?

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 07/06/2026 16:37

@PhaedraTwo How superior of you. Must be wonderful to be perfect!

TheSquareMile · 07/06/2026 16:38

@buddy79

Would this be too old-fashioned, OP?

I think that the length and line are what will suit you.

EnoughRain · 07/06/2026 16:40

The first one is very frumpy.

Second is better, but not great.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 07/06/2026 16:47

These are expensive and would probably need to be shortened, but you cannot go wrong with styles like this.

Yes you can. I’m assuming OP isn’t in her 70s.

Oh I wouldn’t pay attention to what she says about stylish. She’s on another thread about a MOB dress that the vast majority of the thread like but she’s been going on and on about how it’s dated and not appropriate when she’s very much in the minority with that view.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 07/06/2026 16:56

It’s town hall and then big reception in a hipster pub I think

I've been to a wedding exactly like this and the first dress is perfect for that sort of vibe. Shame if it doesn't suit you but that's the sort of thing I'd be looking for.

PhaedraTwo · 07/06/2026 18:10

Chiapotayto · 07/06/2026 16:50

It's not that the OP isn't in her 70s that's the problem with those dresses but that they're very staid. They're Royal Wedding dresses.

Whereas the wedding is "town hall and then big reception in a hipster pub"

Which is slightly odd as that poster has been lecturing on another thread about how ridiculous it is to be overdressed but here is suggesting £600+Beulah wedding guest dresses.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 07/06/2026 19:01

@Chiapotayto They are not sold to people in their 70s! LKB used to do similar. No one wearing one yesterday was 70. It’s just a style that’s easy to wear for any wedding and can be dressed up or down. I’m not suggesting anyone actuality buys this brand, but a fitted style for someone shorter works well. Style like this doesn’t really date if you have good shoes and a bag. It’s like a uniform - you pull it out when it’s needed and it makes life easy.

TheCurious0range · 07/06/2026 19:50

Farm Rio have some lovely stuff at the moment, even if it's beyond budget good for inspiration.
I went to a similar wedding last year and either of those dresses you shared would be fine, do not turn up to a London hipster wedding in Beulah! 😂
Love and roses can do some nice stuff too at a much more affordable price point
