What make-up do you wear in your 60s?

I feel like I am behind the times with my make up. I wear concealer, pale eyeshadow, eyeliner along my top lashes and mascara every day as my eyelashes are pale and fine and my eyes disappear otherwise. I usually wear a soft pink lipstick. I wear foundation only if I am on a night out (rare) and do look better with it.

I like the defined eyebrows and eyelashes look but it doesn’t really suit my features. I noticed all the young women at my hairdressers recently had scraped back hair, sculpted eyebrows, lovely eyelashes and clear skin. That’s not my look at all!

These are the main products I use:
Next or Estée Lauder eyeshadow
Maybelline, Rimmel, Benefit or Soap and Glory mascara
Nars concealer and blush
Natural Collection tinted moisturiser
Estée Lauder double wear foundation
Max Factor pressed powder
Natural Collection eyebrow kit
L’oreal eyebrow pencil
Rimmel Scandaleyes eyeliner
L’oreal or Next sheer pink lipstick
Mac bright pink lipstick
Estée Lauder bright red lipstick (occasionally)
I don’t wear all that make-up day to day but just to give you an idea of the products I have.

What make up do you wear if you are in your 60s? I am 62. Any advice on products or application you can give me so I can update my look a bit?

I find make up weird. I was chatting with my next door neighbour yesterday and I realised I was looking more at her make up than at her, IYSWIM. It was a distraction from the person.
She's in her 60s and I'm 71 and never wore skin make up, always hated lippy, just eye make up probably last worn 40 years ago-ish?

It's a money making confidence undermining scam IMHO.

👏👏👏

I stopped wearing make up about ten year’s ago. When everyone (including myself) is used to your unadorned face, I’d fear I’d just look like Baby Jane.

🤣 me too!

Remind me - how many thousands of years have human beings spent adorning their faces? 😂

Well remind me how long people have been indulging in war, rape etc and then tell me that just because we've been doing it forever it's a good thing?
What about free will and progress?

Eborian CC cream in the palest shade Porcelain and Maybelline 24 Hour Lip Colour in either 135 Perpetual Rose or 185 Rose Dust. I can’t be bothered with anything else.

Gettingbysomehow · 06/06/2026 09:40

Touche eclat foundation. I avoid anything cakey. No powder, its too heavy.
Neutral eyeshadow usually some shade of brown, it makes my very blue eyes pop.
Mid brown eyeliner on the top lid, the pen type.
No eyeliner on the lower eye it instantly makes you look older.
A really good mascara. Try and avoid spider legs.
A light dusting of blush on the cheekbones. Professionally shaped eyebrows. I can only wear pale lipstick with my very white skin tone, I tried red once and everyone laughed.
Less is more when you get older. Try and avoid being Barbara Cartland 😂

I’m 57 does that count?
Ive upgraded my moisturiser and use a night cream as well, plus a lot of lip balm as my lip skin feels fragile these days.

Recently started trying Chanel water fresh tint with a brush to change my skin tone and I do like the effect.

Then a mascara but the Clinique one I got free with a moisturiser is not great, going to try another.

Anything I don’t like the look of on younger people I don’t use, I can’t get on with the massive eyebrows or hefty lashes, I’ve never liked the look of blush, contour or bronzer. I’m going to try some powder next as the light bounces off my wrinkles a lot.

I’m in your age group and didn’t want to waste time or money trying new products, not to mention the intimidating beauty counter!

I found a wedding make-up artist who also gives make-up lessons.
My thinking was that she would be used to working with all ages from teenage bridesmaids to MOB and Grandmothers, etc.

It was an hour and a half session and I came away with a list of product shades and brands which suit me for a daytime natural look and a more glamorous evening look, together with a reminder of how and where to apply the various cosmetics.

She used a variety of cosmetic brands and also gave recommendations for brushes and applicators. She also went through my make-up bag and picked out the best products to keep, as I don’t think she ever advocates throwing it all out and starting from scratch.

I have my brows and lashes tinted. I use a colour corrector from beauty pie under my eyes and if I’m going out I add Charlotte tilbury beautiful skin foundation with a brush, Victoria Beckham cream blusher and a dusting of Charlotte tilbury airbrush finish. Either burts bees lip balm in red dahlia or Clinique black honey. Sometimes Victoria Beckham lipstick if I want red lips. Rarely do I bother with eye makeup, but I have a nice Victoria Beckham eye palette and eyeliner pencils and various mascaras which I think are crap.

I’m mid 50s and have always loved wearing makeup. For me it’s been a way of letting loose my artistic side, particularly with eyeshadow. I don’t wear makeup everyday and am happy to go out to the shops completely makeup free but on the days I’m in the office even on my own (it’s normally just me and my boss) I enjoy putting on my face - it has always been just for me, never because I was conforming to societal expectations. However, lately I’ve enjoyed a more minimal look which generally involves, erborian CC, Lisa Eldridge liquid eyeshadow in Paige, Lisa Eldridge cheek and lip balm, l’oreal brown mascara, Charlotte Tilbury legendary brows and then various lip balms. I’m considering donating all my eyeshadow palettes to my daughter but I’m not sure I can let go of them, lol.

I have dry sensitive eyes and can no longer wear eye makeup. However, I am fortunate that I have dark eyebrows and dark eyelashes. I also wear glasses, so I don't think anyone notices that I'm not wearing eye makeup.

In summer I just use a little gradual tan on my face instead of tinted moisturiser, and just add blusher and lipstick or tinted lip balm.

KrazyKatty · 06/06/2026 10:20

I like watching videos by Nikol on YouTube as she has lots of really good tips and tricks.

Also, Lisa Eldridge and Look Fabulous Forever are both UK based channels.

I don't wear make up at all . I find lipstick bleeds into the lines around my mouth . Foundation settles in the wrinkles and exacerbates them and mascara makes my eyes run . I just moisturise and stay out of the sun now l am older .

Edited

No7 stay perfect anti feathering lip pencil is excellent , it stops the colour bleeding

Starrynight01 · 06/06/2026 11:40

Thanks for the replies. It’s interesting to see what products people use and that many don’t wear make up at all! (Not ready for that myself.)

I have had my brows and lashes tinted several times and it makes no difference as they are so fine so I am still using eyebrow pencil and mascara at the very least.

I will look at the YouTube videos recommended and I was thinking of going to a make up counter for some inspiration so I might do that.

Not a makeup wearer, never have been apart from a bit of mascara and eye liner. Had the occasional consultation but never liked the results, so foundation has never featured in my routine.
Now in late 60s and use plenty of moisturiser but nothing else, as even mascara now irritates my eyes. I think I'd be another Baby Jane lookalike if I went the whole hog now!

Meadowfinch · 06/06/2026 11:59

Most of the time, a tinted moisturiser only on my nose, blending outwards.
Eyeliner, two tones of pale eye shadow (usually cream and soft brown or peach). I add a little background weight to my eye brows to even them up and dark brown waterproof mascara.

I'm brunette and I aim to strengthen my natural colouring and features.

In the summer I wear protective lip gloss. Evenings out, I wear lipstick and lightweight false eyelashes

SeditiousPam · 06/06/2026 12:02

@Starrynight01 I honestly would have a chat with ChatGPT first. Show it a photo of your face and tell it what you’re hoping to achieve. It’s obviously not flawless but it can tell you about new products you may not have come across and that might not be sold in your habitual shops. The more it gets to know your preferences the more accurate the advice will become. And unlike a make up assistant in store it will tell you if there are things you really don’t need.

That way, by the time you arrive at a make-up counter you’ll know if what you’re being shown really is the best available or just what they happen to have in stock. And you won’t be handing over any more money for pale eyeshadow unless it makes you look amazing.

minnowonthesay · 06/06/2026 12:22

I look so much better with make up, I just don’t have a face that suits a no make up look, I’m 60. I also have hair that needs work too.
I use concealer and foundation by Victoria Beckham or Eborian (was a DW wearer but trying to ween myself off)
I like bronzer for a glow - Guerlain
Bit of blush by Clinique
Eyebrows filled in with Elf waterproof pencil in taupe.
Brown smudged eye pencil on lash line - Maybelline tattoo liner or Huda
Curl my very straight lashes with Surratt curlers and set the curl with Beauty Pie waterproof mascara.
Lip line has disappeared so use Huda lip pencil with a pinky longwear Lipstains Gold lipstick.
Setting spray by Charlotte Tilbury
The whole thing takes about 10 minutes, then usually another 10 to spray hair with Living Proof hair refresh mist and give a quick style with my hairdryer or heated hot brush.
I do sometimes think I can’t be bothered but I feel so much better if I do, so on we go!
