Foundation for dry skin - in perimenopause

Livpool · 01/06/2026 21:04

Hoping for the collective wisdom. I am 45 (almost 46) and have very dry skin. I am in perimenopause and getting some hormonal acne on and around my chin. I need a foundation or skin tint with medium coverage and a dewy finish. I don’t want to spend more than £20. I have a medium skin tone with neutral-leaning to cool undertone.

Foundations I have tried:
Elf soft glam - too drying on my skin
Maybelline skin tint - love bit struggled with matching my skin tone
Maybelline Pro Filter - like this a lot
L’Oreal True - like this a lot
It Cosmetics CC - used the version for dry skin and really liked it but expensive

I have also used the old formulation of Armani Skin Silk and liked it BUT I had to use a lot of moisturising skincare, or else it looked cakey. And,
too expensive!

I have skin that tends to dry and is very sensitive. It is more expensive than you want to spend but Bobbi Brown intensive serum foundation and also the primer that goes with it suits me really well. Matches your description of what you want perfectly but is about £50 and £35 from memory.

My foundation/serum lasts me more than a year so I don't mind the cost, am sure someone will be along with better price point suggestions.

Livpool · 01/06/2026 21:43

Thanks @FaceForRadioIII- I would spend £50
if my foundation lasted a year! I need to replace after about 3 months - can I ask how often you wear foundation? I tend to wear at least 5 days per week,
Teams calls for work make me look like death without make up on!

I wear the primer daily and only add foundation on my office days or if I’m going out somewhere. The primer (intensive serum one) is my favourite primer of all time.

Thanks - I would be willing to pay £50 for a decent foundation for going out. But I would still need a cheaper alternative for Teams calls etc. . Thanks for your recommendations

I like L’Oréal Lumi Glotion and Radiant Glow by Ekin-Su.

I have dry skin and my favourite foundation is Glossier stretch foundation. Looks skin like with light to medium coverage and a natural finish. It really is beautiful.

Don’t know why the link is so big!
I love this stuff, it’s similar to the Hollywood Charlotte tilbury.

Thanks - is that a primer or a foundation/skin tint?

What didn’t you like about L’Oréal True Match?

Iwanttobeafraser · 01/06/2026 22:49

I also have v dry skin thats neutral to cool, and my budget foundation option is the L'Oréal one you also like.

For me, ensuring my skin is well looked after under foundation makes a big difference. Balm cleansing at night and gentle cleanser in the morning, often with mild exfoliating. I use a vitamin c/hyaluronic serum and, sometimes, clarins double serum. Then giveaway q10 with spf. I like the bobbi brown vitamin enriched face base and someone jist told me that aldi do a good dupe! Or i use a trinny one. Or the glotion from L'Oréal. All done just before make up so my skin is well moisterised.

Foundation lasts much longer, and looks better, if applied correctly. I am completely committed to the Katie Jane Hughes application method where you put a bit of foundation on your hand the smooth your brush in it completely then apply to face. I think a thick application backfires and makes your face drier.

cotedazur28 · 01/06/2026 22:52

@LivpoolGlossier foundation is online on the Glossier website or from spacenk. The shade range is really decent. I’m a light neutral and have the shade L2. Oh and it’s £34.

Thanks! 🤩 I don’t use a heavy base at all. Will look to that methods though

What didn’t you like about L’Oréal True Match?

I just wasn’t sure it was ‘It’. I am mostly struggling with my current texture, and just wondered if there was anything I hadn’t considered.

Have you tried mixing it with the glotion? I do that sometimes for a softer more dewy finish.

I agree with all of this OP. I've had to up my game in the skin care dept since 50 and I seem to need to use different products (where I was a one size fits all person pre 50). I use a different cleanser and toner at nighttime which I love as it is exfoliating, but it I use it twice a day it is too much and dries my skin out. I use a hydrating cleanser, spray thing and oil in the morning.

Also agree about using a brush - whoever knew it made such a difference to coverage and just how it goes on. I've never really been that into it until it started to look wrong/cakey. My 20 year old gives me hints and tips on applying my make up 😅.

I'm currently liking Revolution Skin Silk Serum Foundation . I find it has decent coverage but not mask like, is glowy and hydrating (a bit too much for me so I powder it down), has a good range of shades and undertones, and is dirt cheap. Available in Superdrug/Boots etc if you wanted to try it or shade match first! Could be a good everyday for you and get a more premium one for special occasions!

Thanks all - will take a look at the suggestions given. I do use a brush to apply my foundation, I do think it makes a difference.
