Do you buy original perfumes, dupes or a mixture?

What perfumes do I like. Do U wear dupes or the original expensive perfumes? I like 'surprise' perfume, which is supposed to be very similar to scandal. I also like black opium (can't justify paying the price though). I have dupes of it, although my hubby did buy me a small bottle of the original, which I use for special occasions. Just curious if people buy originals or dupes or a mixture?

I wouldn't buy a dupe, you've no idea what is in it.

I would never buy a dupe.

It’s not right, just like buying fakes, ripping off someone’s work.

And there is no need. There are plenty of reasonably priced original perfumes out there.

I buy dupes of discontinued scents. I have some of much loved but no longer available Tom Ford scents and some I loved in the 90s and 2000s that are long gone. I think that's justifiable.

Fraughtmum · 02/06/2026 06:39

Always original. Byredo, Goldfield and Banks, Julie has a gun. I wear them every day.

Thecows · 02/06/2026 06:40

Are there any dupes that are cruelty free please?

Depends what you want a dupe of and what your consider to be reasonably priced. Theres going to be a lot of variance and it’s all relative to someone’s income.

I buy a mix as I like to wear different perfumes often. Noted Aromas is good for letting me test out higher end brands.

BIossomtoes · 02/06/2026 07:07

A mixture. My favourite scent is Frederic Malle Lipstick Rose which is £££. My husband buys it for me and I buy a dupe from Perfume Parlour that smells exactly the same. I have dupes of a couple of Tom Ford perfumes and one of Byredo Rose of No Man’s Land - all copies that certainly fool my nose. Some budget scents are excellent - Zara’s Fashionably London smells as if it costs a lot more.

IwanttoWFH · 02/06/2026 07:16

A mixture. I bought a few 5ml samples from Noted Aroma. My favourite is Monte Carlo which is a dupe of Baccarat Rogue. I can’t smell it on myself but someone complimented me on how lovely I smelt the other day so it must last! I also like Rio which is a Tom Ford dupe and does last all day.
I also bought a Lidl perfume this weekend which is a dupe of Chloe Signature. It was £3.75 for 75ml of Eau de Parfum! It smells lovely and lasts all day.
I have the real versions of YSL Cinema and Chanel No 5. Haven’t found a good dupe of No5 yet.

I hate dupes & i can smell the difference.

I would never buy a dupe handag or clothing item either

A pp poster said they buy dupes of the fashionable perfumes & this is wild to me as i hate smelling like anyone else i know.

I love perfume. I wear it everyday. When i was younger i went through long phases of signature scents, i'd wear one perfume only for several years

Now however i have many & i love to choose depending on my mood.

My favourites are by Tom Ford, Le Labo, Acqua di Parma, Santa Maria Novella & Diptyque. I have several from each.

Dh buys them for me & i also treat myself

Dh also loves scents & he wears Tom Ford, Loewe & Santa Maria Novella. He also sometimes buys a lovely L'Occitane one for more daily use.

My mother was using a dupe of a Jo Malone perfume (despite having loads of original perfume including that actual one) it smelled so bad we had to say it!

TwilightSkies · 02/06/2026 07:35

Dupes all the way.

Im a single parent working full-time and cost of living is hitting me hard.
I adore fragrances and the real things are often rip-offs. Why would I scrimp and save for months to buy an original when I can get a perfect dupe for 10% of the price?

Life is too short and perfume brings me a lot of joy.

BIossomtoes · 02/06/2026 08:29

Frankly I don’t believe people who say they can smell the difference with dupes. I sprayed my all time love, Lipstick Rose, on one wrist and the dupe on the other and there was literally not an atom of difference. The difference was in the longevity.

SaraCrewe06 · 02/06/2026 08:41

Mainly dupes now I’ve discovered Essence Vault!
I can afford to buy the originals but now feel they are a con.
Someone identified Jo Malone’s English Pear and Freesia (dupe) on me a few days ago.
Regarding longevity, my dupes last longer than the originals.
The only original perfumes that I love and that last are Portrait of a Lady and La Vie est Belle….but I haven’t tried them as dupes!
Just checked, Essence Vault is cruelty-free.

Just because that’s one exceptional dupe, it doesn’t mean no one can tell the difference between any dupes and originals though. Some are much better than others. I love perfume and tend to stick with originals (usually small bottles as I like variety) but I do use a couple of dupes from Perfume Parlour. They are really good for the price, but not identical to the originals.

Perfume Parlour does a very good dupe of PoaL. It fooled one of my friends who has used it for years.

Originals only, but I prefer travel sizes (10-20ml) and sample sizes so that I can try a range of scents, I’m very selective about if something deserves a full bottle space in my collection, I don’t blind buy or impulse purchase.

Harhar · 02/06/2026 16:15

Perfumes smell different on different people. I wouldn’t be confident I’d know a dupe.

I’ve got a lost cherry one from essence vault. Lasts for ages.

Meeeeeeow · 02/06/2026 16:16

Originals. I am too sensitive , I can smell something not quite right with dupes. My friend insist they are great but none of the ones she’s had have compared (but I can’t tell her lol)

Edited

A dupe isnt a fake though. They advertise themselves as being similar to rather than pretending to be the genuine product. They come with a list of ingredients. They are fine just generally not as long wearing.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 02/06/2026 16:26

Per pp I wouldn't buy dupes. Part of the pleasure of perfume for me is actually about the branding, the nice box and so on. Some of my favourites are from Byredo, Le Labo, Frederic Malle, Phlur, Diptque and so on, and I'm buying into the "experience" rather than just the scent.

I'd rather have a cheap canvas tote bag from Primark than a fake designer bag, and I feel kind of the same way about perfume, I'd prefer to buy something cheap and affordable in its own right like Yardley than a knock-off.

I do agree that it's totally personal though and also about budget so I don't have any thoughts on what anyone else wears!

Starlightwarrior · 02/06/2026 16:28

Has anyone tried products from this company please? I'm tempted!

OnGoldenPond · 02/06/2026 16:34

I buy lesser known but still good quality perfumes that are fairly inexpensive rather than big name perfumes. That way I don’t end up smelling like everyone else! Favourite producers include Fragonard from Grasse in France. They have some lovely botanical based perfumes. Not too bothered about expensive big names.

cramptramp · 02/06/2026 16:49

But how do you know if a dupe is going to smell like the original? I paid £45 for one and it’s nice, but nothing like what I wanted it to be.

The Superdrug dupe of La Vie Est Belle is Artiscent Atelier Patchouli Passion and its lovely.

i had the Aldi dupe of Jo Malones Poppy and Barley which ran out last Friday evening and that lasted ages on me.

NorWouldTilly · 02/06/2026 17:14

@BIossomtoes I’ve just finished my current bottle of Lipstick Rose. It’s my habitual spring perfume.

I’m not interested in dupes. I’m interested in perfume and acquire countless samples and relatively few full bottles, always of originals. (Often a bit more niche than Frederic Malle.) There wouldn’t be time or space in my life to chase up and own copies.

I know what you mean but some of the perfumes you mention don’t have particularly attractive bottles / branding despite the price tag. I know Le Labo is supposed to look like apothecary bottles, but I find them grim and only put up with them for the scent!

whiteroseredrose · 02/06/2026 17:25

I buy Eden because they are vegan. I have forgotten what the original perfume smells like so the Eden one is good enough.
