I am starting a fashion business. Can you tell me which of 3 green colour you prefer for a maxi dress, and if possible why you prefer it? It’s for one of my dresses. I would be grateful ☺️

I would want the designer of the dress to know exactly what s/he wants to achieve with any particular shade. That’s what I’m paying for.

I understand your point. But at the end of the day, I am also thinking from commercial point of view. Also, I am a self taught designer, so I guess I am being a less confident. But I get your point 😊

I’d prefer a bright green

Pearlstillsinging · 25/05/2026 15:44

I would opt for the lime green. I often call it "Roman green" because it's a shade they use a lot, which makes it easy to mix and match outfits.

RandomMess · 25/05/2026 15:46

I think a tone slightly more olive would be preferable.

I suit & love green but getting a good shade is difficult.

RampantIvy · 25/05/2026 15:46

is it because it doesn’t suit their skin tone

Yes. I suit cool colours. Those greens are warm, yellow toned colours and wouldn't suit me. You will probably get an even split between people who suit cool colours and people who suit warm colours TBH.

cancelthebbc · 25/05/2026 15:50

I have olive skin, so prefer bright, cool toned greens. Yellow or dirty shades really make me look sallow

Yetone · 25/05/2026 16:16

OP, I don’t know how on trend your fashion business is going to be but there was an awful lot of green about around 4 years ago so the colour is not going to be on trend right now.

How much attention do people pay to colour trends though?

I just don't buy colours that don't suit me and nor do lots of people.

Italiangreyhound · 25/05/2026 22:59

The lightest one.

I prefer light colours.

I buy colours I like. I've no particular awareness of whether a colour is trending.

They wouldn’t suit my skin tone.

Here’s your difficulty, @Dressdesigner

Unless you’ve decided you’re designing only for a particular subset of one particular ethnicity you cannot pre-determine which colour would be most popular in any multi-ethnic population.

It’s up to you to decide what you wish to express with a particular colour - ideally in concert with your idea for a particular shape / structure / fabric, which you think would be best in this or that colour. Then you try to make your garment as persuasive, or thrilling, as possible, depending on where you see yourself in the market.

I’m not going to buy from a designer whose answer to an interview question is We did some market research and as the majority of our respondents were of White, English Rose colouring we went with what would suit them.

But that would be the determiner for me. I've no idea or interest in what colours are meant to suit my skin tone.

WaterWonky · 26/05/2026 09:28

I love green and wear it a lot but I wouldn't wear any of these- all the colours seem slightly off. Top one is the least bad but I'd prefer a stronger shade- these are all a bit acid. Am warm-toned.

Oh wow. I didn’t expect so many replies. Thank you so much to all the posters who commented here. I am so grateful for your replies.

Those who don’t like any of the colours, is it because it doesn’t suit their skin tone or just a personal preference?

My reason is both. I prefer khaki greens.

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 26/05/2026 09:47

I guess it’s a possible trading model though!

Hey guys! Here’s this lovely garment I’ve made. Vote for the colour you like best and I’ll make it in the winning tone. Leave a comment to be in with a chance of winning a free garment!

Remember me when it’s a big success, @Dressdesigner!

Myoldbear · 26/05/2026 09:54

Top middle for me, but even so I'd have to be feeling fairly flamboyant and confident.

Generally I'd go for olive or khaki shades, or more likely bottle green.

People's colouring is important though; I have friends that I could imagine the lime green would look great on.

Maybe it depends on the vibe you want your business to give; the kind of customer you're looking for.

RampantIvy · 26/05/2026 16:17

Clearly, lots of posters do though @PhaedraTwo
Even if you werent interested in whether a colour suited you, you still wouldn't pick a colour you dislike though, or would you?

Tonissister · 26/05/2026 16:22

I would also prefer a more neutral sagey green than those very strong yellowy greens. Could you do one in that acid green or leaf green (far right fabric swatch) and one in a more muted sage/khaki?

I always find it frustrating when there is a beautiful dress design that only comes in one colour that is not flattering to all skin tones.

whattheysay · 26/05/2026 16:27

Option 2. It looks a bit brighter than option 3 and I would not buy option 1 as it looks like a fluorescent or neon colour to me

FruAashild · 26/05/2026 18:44

Unless you’ve decided you’re designing only for a particular subset of one particular ethnicity you cannot pre-determine which colour would be most popular in any multi-ethnic population.

I would disagree, I think black, navy blue, beige and olive green will always outsell shocking pink, orange, yellow or bright green because they are perceived as neutral, work appropriate colours. Most companies that do clothes in multiple colours do mainly neutrals and then a couple of brights or primary colours. Because the neutrals sell.

redcosmeticbag · 26/05/2026 18:55

Middle or right.

CaptainBeefheartspal · 26/05/2026 18:56

Lime green looks a bit cheap I think but would be more summery. The mid one is nice but it’s more of an autumnal colour.

But not picking a colour I dislike is completely different from not picking a colour because "it won't suit my skin tone, even although I love it"

DramaAlpaca · 27/05/2026 11:54

The top/middle one for me.

The lime green wouldn't suit my skin tone at all.
