Putting ash blonde home dye over brassy hair?

I had highlights done last month at a salon, but the result is very, very brassy. There are areas that have come out super blonde, but overall, it's absolutely not what I was hoping for. My natural hair colour is a very dark brown, and I've messed with it a lot the past few years (the hairdresser said this is why it's come out so uneven).
I was planning on going back to the salon for another application to lift the brassy bits some more, however, I think the bits that have come out really blonde (mostly around my face) don't even suit me. I think it's too blonde for my skin tone 🤦‍♀️ so I don't even know if I want it anymore.

I've looked online and seen that using a semi permanent ash blonde will neutralise the brassy tones. It would also tone down the parts that I think are too blonde and give me a colour that would suit me more.

Would this actually work?
Also worried what it would look like as my roots grow out as they're very dark.

I would try a purple toner shampoo. Lee Staffords is good. You don't want to damage your hair with dye on dye so quickly.

I have purple shampoo and a purple mask but they don't make any difference to it whatsoever.

Also, it would be due another bleach soon anyway as it's been almost 4 weeks and my roots are coming through.

Rather than risk an at home job I would go to the salon and get a toner. That way you can tell them what colour you want to achieve.

Purple shampoo has never worked on my hair. I use the bleach london silver shampoo, leave it on for five to ten mins before rinsing.

I have done this with naff hairdresser results. Loreal preference, or last time I used schwarzkopf and it worked really well. Still used purple shampoo afterwards but overall much happier than looking yellowy.

Purple shampoo will only work if your base colour is light enough and the overall tone is yellow / gold rather than orangey / copper.
If your hair is patchy and different colours throughout then you need to be mindful that the ash colour will take differently in each area and may make the lighter bits around the front very cool toned or even khaki, depending on what ash tone you use. You do run the risk of making it worse and harder for a professional to
correct. Can you pop some pictures up OP?

My daughter had this problem and her hairdresser recommended she use a black shampoo and conditioner. I did a bit of research and went for the Osmo Super Ice shampoo and hair mask- the results have been good, its toned down the brassiness a lot x

I have a similar problem. Someone on another thread recommended Milkshake Black shampoo, which I've ordered. It wasn't cheap, so I hope it helps a little! Purple shampoo just my hair look like I've used lilac dye.

I wouldn’t use a product that requires mixing as that will have peroxide- I’d use a coloured gloss type product that you leave in for 20 mins after washing and then rinse out, it will deep condition your hair too.
dP Hue are good…comes in various colours and you can use it regularly and

That’s what I did after bad highlights last year and then after a few months did a demi permanent a few times. I think the semi permanent was better though. Like a nice conditioner and easy to top up before a night out

For some reason I thought ash can't go over metallic or gets a green tinge?
Not sure if an old wives tale or not.
Eta Google says the green tinge thing is unlikly. I wish I had known this the time I came out of the hairdressers looking like a marigold.

Thank you for all of your advice. I've never heard of black shampoo, but I've decided to just go for it and cover with a dark ash blonde. Wish me luck!

Glad you had good results, @OP . I risked this more than 40 yrs ago, after being given grey streaks instead of the blonde that I'd requested - I had a job interview coming up and looked like I'd aged overnight.

It did look lovely - my own colour came out dark ash blonde, and the streaks came out light ash blonde, but I think I'd be nervous of trying it again.
