Putting ash blonde home dye over brassy hair?

I had highlights done last month at a salon, but the result is very, very brassy. There are areas that have come out super blonde, but overall, it's absolutely not what I was hoping for. My natural hair colour is a very dark brown, and I've messed with it a lot the past few years (the hairdresser said this is why it's come out so uneven).
I was planning on going back to the salon for another application to lift the brassy bits some more, however, I think the bits that have come out really blonde (mostly around my face) don't even suit me. I think it's too blonde for my skin tone 🤦‍♀️ so I don't even know if I want it anymore.

I've looked online and seen that using a semi permanent ash blonde will neutralise the brassy tones. It would also tone down the parts that I think are too blonde and give me a colour that would suit me more.

Would this actually work?
Also worried what it would look like as my roots grow out as they're very dark.

Oh dear, we're not having much luck here 🙃
I've now put a light brown hair dye over it. Natural hair is v dark brown so hoped for it to look like lowlights rather than cover it all dark. I don't have much hope for it holding up, I'm sure the ginger will come back through again, but for now it's a bit better.

When I dyed my hair khaki by putting brown over blonde my hairdresser told me that being blonde strips out colour and though it sounds counterintuitive given the brassiness you need to add warm red tones to give the ashier tones something to cling too. I’d highly recommend getting a hair sealer like glaze ( I use clairol as cheaper) and it’ll protect your dye job from washing out those darker tones so the ginge doesn’t shine through.
