Complimenting strangers on their dress

Do you ever do this?! I usually feel too awkward to do this and don’t want to accidentally offend someone somehow, so mostly just keep the thought in my head, which seems a shame really. But occasionally I’ve given a random stranger a compliment and it’s brightened my day as well as theirs. The best time ever was admiring a woman’s incredible jacket while waiting to pay for a car parking session. She was so delighted - it turned out she’d made it herself and it was her first time wearing it.

Once or twice it has happened to me and it really has made my day.

So my question is - do you do this or has it ever happened to you? Should we do it more?!

Thank you M & S checkout assistant this afternoon who complimented my dress and cardigan.

I get lots of compliments on my dresses from strangers

I love it and I always do that same.

Perhaps l should? I tend not to unless l strike up a conversation with someone about something else. I’ve had it done to me though.

I do this often, particularly if someone is trying something lovely on.

I want to but I always get the timing wrong so I end up going “I like your tights!!” or “That’s a nice dress!!!” either as they’re walking away or at a random point in the conversation. Or when someone’s making me a coffee and I suddenly go “Your hair is AMAZING!!” as they’re trying to make it.

Nothing wrong with that?
I’m sure they were delighted at the compliment.

Yes, I have done it a couple of times in recent times, and on both occasions the women appeared absolutely delighted. I like to think it made their day. No one has ever done it to me, sadly, but I'd be over the moon if they did.

I am not at all confident in my appearance (thanks school bullies your words stayed with me a lifetime) and take a lot of time putting outfits together hoping I’ll look okay, so when a stranger pays a genuine compliment to me on my clothing it makes my day.

I used to do it more but live in a smaller town now, so don't see many people.

Used to compliment kids too, but you have to be subtle and not draw attention to them.

A little girl (4 ish) then went on to tell me how she'd dressed herself that day, she was so proud and made my day.
Complimented the mum too of course.

Have had compliments but not recently and I can see why as have let myself go quite a bit.

Even catching my own reflection in a shop window makes me wince. Must try harder 😅.
