Complimenting strangers on their dress

Do you ever do this?! I usually feel too awkward to do this and don’t want to accidentally offend someone somehow, so mostly just keep the thought in my head, which seems a shame really. But occasionally I’ve given a random stranger a compliment and it’s brightened my day as well as theirs. The best time ever was admiring a woman’s incredible jacket while waiting to pay for a car parking session. She was so delighted - it turned out she’d made it herself and it was her first time wearing it.

Once or twice it has happened to me and it really has made my day.

So my question is - do you do this or has it ever happened to you? Should we do it more?!

Why? I’ve yet to meet someone who is upset by being told they look great. I understand on here some people don’t like that but in real, life I’ve never encountered such a thing.

I don't think like it. Happy for the compliment to be the thing - not me.

I mean this gently, but something in your tone makes me wonder, do you often get people complimenting you?

BuntyBeaufort · 23/05/2026 15:13

Yes, I did it yesterday in my local supermarket. She was very happy at the compliment, and told me her lovely dress was a cheap thing from Shein. Didn’t matter, she looked fab.

BruFord · 23/05/2026 17:03

@BuntyBeaufort My DD bought the dress that she was complimented on from a discount shop (somewhere like TK Maxx). It just makes her feel even better that she got a great bargain!

Eh?

I doubt there's a week goes where I've not had at least 1 compliment about my clothes. I don't give the personal type of compliment and I'm not interested in getting them.

amoamas · 23/05/2026 17:15

I do it all the time, especially if the person is plus-sized (as I am) and might therefore not automatically know/feel that they look good.

TamzinGrey · 23/05/2026 17:25

A woman called out to me from across the road to say that she loved my top. It was several months ago, but remembering it still gives me a happy feeling, and I wear that top with pride.
Please carry on complimenting people everyone 😊

Wow,ok.

I complement women and love it when other women complement me.

BountifulPantry · 23/05/2026 18:12

This is a really common way for 2 women to start a conversation. You compliment them and they compliment you. You start chit chat about fashion. That’s how you start speaking to someone.

To the people who don’t like it- it’s not actually to comment on your appearance.! It’s to start a conversation in a friendly and polite way.

dizzydizzydizzy · 23/05/2026 18:20

I do sometimes. I saw a woman wearing a bright pink coat. The colour really suited her plus it cheered up a a dreary day. She was very happy to hear it.

MildlyAnnoyed · 23/05/2026 18:45

I have a couple of times. It’s lovely to hear a compliment especially from a stranger, it seems so much more sincere.

Oldraver · 23/05/2026 18:50

Yes I do and I got positive comments in return. It does brighten your day

Toddlerteaplease · 23/05/2026 19:05

Yes, I admired a mum at works dress. She said she got it from the clothes shop at main entrance to the hospital. I went straight down there and bought one.

Nofeckingway · 23/05/2026 19:18

I was quite taken back in the States at how often people will make a remark to a stranger . Traveling with my DD who had long curly red hair was a non stop commentary most places we went . Guess it is an unusual colour there . She said she felt like a rockstar .

NannyOf8Girls · 23/05/2026 19:39

I do it! All so far have been delighted!

ohyesido · 23/05/2026 19:42

I was complimented on my flared jeans last week by a shop assistant, it really made my day

Britpopbaby · 23/05/2026 19:57

Yes. I think of how lovely it is when a stranger compliments me on what I am wearing and I hope that my compliments do the same.

I used to do it all the time, I always thought it was a nice thing and would brighten someone's day and I absolutely love the few times it's happened to me. Then in quick succession I had someone respond in a sort of 'i don't choose my clothes to impress others' sort of a way and also had someone I was with mention that 'your generation are so shallow and fixated on appearance these days, why would your opinion be relevant to a total stranger?'

Knocked my confidence tbh and haven't done it as much since.

What a horrible thing to say! It reflects badly on them not you - nice dress sense, mean personality.....

LambriniBobInIsleworthISeesYa · 23/05/2026 20:09

I do it all the time because I love it when someone compliments me.

DinoLil · 23/05/2026 20:15

I do it all the time if I spot someone rocking something amazing.

seanconneryseyebrow · 23/05/2026 20:16

I vow that every time I think something nice about a womans appearance I always tell them. They always love it (unless they are very good actresses). I always feel a bit nervous if they have a resting bitch face (don't we all sometimes) but 100 per cent of the time they light up like a christmas tree.

Happened the other day at a gift shop and this woman had done her eyeliner in such an amazing and precise way - green - and she had black hair and I told her exactly what was on my mind when I looked at her. She was beaming and said I absolutely made her day - which then made mine.

Giving compliments all the time feels amazing actually.

Abustedflush · 23/05/2026 20:30

I received a compliment today, which was lovely as I’m a 60 year old, short sack of spuds, but was wearing a coral summer dress, and then saw a woman in her 30s wearing a gorgeous floral dress in Lidl, and told her dress was beautiful. She beamed!

No, it's just a passing compliment. I absolutely do not want to start a conversation about fashion. Mostly I don't want to start a conversation on anything - they're busy, I'm busy. It was a compliment, nothing more needed except a quick acknowledgement.

SaraOnSaturday · 23/05/2026 22:42

I went on a first date last night and he complimented me on my dress.
Then when he'd nipped out to his car, a guy actually came up to me complimenting my look too.
It didn't offend me. I was flattered.

On the flip side, I occasionally compliment other women on their jacket or bag or anything - admittedly I don't believe I've ever said it to a male that I don't know.

It's a nice feeling to receive and give a compliment, in my opinion.
