Nice summer dresses for apple shapes?

Bluestofblue · 21/05/2026 19:09

Anyone seen any nice summer dresses for Apple shapes? I’m late 40s, size 12 to 14, menopausal weight gain not doing wonders for my roundness if km honest!

I always have this problem with finding summer dresses, but this year I want to get in early!

There was a post last week on here about stylish everyday dresses that might be worth looking at as there were a few like that.

I’m a similar shape but anything too long looks crap on me and my legs are ok so I’d rather not cover them up! I’m on the lookout for something just below the knee!

deeahgwitch · 21/05/2026 19:28

They are lovely dresses but I personally need some sort of sleeve.
Are you tall @Bluestofblue?

Selkie33 · 21/05/2026 19:35

@Bluestofblue drop waist dresses are very forgiving for an apple 😊

Pearl69 · 21/05/2026 19:38

I have a few from Apricot. They do midi and knee lengths .

Thechateau · 21/05/2026 19:43

I'm an apple and have that Tu dress on its way to me. I think it looks as if it will be pretty flattering

Bluestofblue · 21/05/2026 19:58

I’m not tall unfortunately - around 5’5 so kind of average height

Ooh excellent! Will you update when it has arrived?

Of course, I am optimistic!

@Selkie33 I’m not sure dropped waists are forgiving of an apple shape. I tried one on lately and it actually accentuated my tum, sadly, whatever way it hung.
Years ago when I was a skinny thing they were lovely on me.

I agree!

Drop waists look awful on me.

I'm apple shaped (and rather tubby), and I need to accentuate my fabulous boobs and my fabulous legs, and just kind of skip over the not so fabulous bit in the middle. Empire line, v or deep square necks, a-line, wrap dresses all work for me. I love Tu dresses, but that high neckline wouldn't work for me.

ButtonNoseBunny · 22/05/2026 08:28

New Look have got some Midi Wrap dresses in green/orange print that would fit the bill. They would skim over the tummy area and have a flattering neckline. They also sell Apricot clothes there and I’ve seen a midi shirt dress in green animal print (honestly not as loud/brash as it sounds) that would be flattering for this shape. It has a slightly fluted hem.

ButtonNoseBunny · 22/05/2026 08:32

I found a forgiving very lightweight floaty maxi dress on the SuperDry website that comes in a few different prints. It’s pure viscose so lovely and cool and this one has a sort of halter neck neckline so the only thing is that it really would need a strapless bra underneath but other than that, it looks very comfy and versatile (can wear with a cardigan or Jacket/dress up or down).

I'm apple shaped with big boobs and skinny legs and find skater dresses suit me 🙂

Bluestofblue · 22/05/2026 10:52

What about this?

I think unfortunately I may have been remembering when I was slim and young re that Tu dress - pps are tight that the high neck line will eventuate my matronly bosom!

skater dresses and empire line unfortunately make me look pregnant

I go through this every summer OP so I feel your pain! In my twenties and early thirties I feel like I had no trouble getting good dresses but now it's a minefield. It doesn't help that I'm short and have big arms!

I do have a lovely Sezane shirt dress that can be belted around the waist which always gets compliments so perhaps shirt dresses are something to consider?

deeahgwitch · 22/05/2026 12:52

A shirt dress with a belt would make look like a sack of spuds, sadly.

Puddings are delicious and gorgeous! Go for it.

I think I am a similar size/shape and I bought this in a large after seeing it on an instagram story. It’s very good quality jersey so doesnt cling, skims over my tummy and also has pockets. I got it in navy and I’m wearing it today!

I like this, but I can't do polyester at all. I have this from last year. https://www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/products/E482982-000/00?colorDisplayCode=38&sizeDisplayCode=003 The cut is very flattering, but I wish they did it in cotton. Airism fabric is not entirely to my taste.

Plump82 · 22/05/2026 14:21

I've discovered trapeze style dresses and they (in my opinion) are super flattering. Lovely and floaty and comfortable as there's nothing digging in!! Tesco brought out one in a whole load of colours and patterns and they're really cheap to pick up on Vinted just now. I think I have every colour and pattern! Here's an example of one

I am an apple shape and recently tried on a dress from other stories that had a dropped waist. I actually laughed at my reflection. This seam landed below my belly and I could not have looked worse if I had tried! I almost ripped it off!

Curro · 23/05/2026 00:30

I find this style really flattering::
https://www.anthropologie.com/en-gb/shop/the-somerset-maxi-dress3

They're pricey but sometimes come up on Ebay.

Also you can get a cheaper version from here in several different colours/prints if you search (although watch out for delivery times):
https://uk.chicwish.com/ebullient-flower-embroidered-frilling-maxi-dress.html

These ones are linen and great in the heat. They are gently fitted and drift tactfully over your waist, but still give you a shape. They often reduce the price in July each year (although not all sizes may still be in stock then):

Also the blogger wearsmymoney did a post very recently about dressing for apple shapes which included a couple of dresses.
