Can you help my unfashionable quest for a cardigan?

Koulibiak · 20/05/2026 22:13

I have a longing for a nice, belted, cream or beige cable knit cardigan. Ideally:

  1. longish so it covers my bum - is that what is called a coatigan? not sure -
  2. pure wool (I like Aran wool but flexible)
  3. with buttons (not open front) and
  4. pockets.

I am well aware they’re not in fashion right now, and I don’t care. I have tried all the obvious brands, AI, and Vinted, and still can’t find one.

I’m picturing myself wearing it on a cool summer evening, walking on a beach. In reality I’m about to have major surgery and will probably use it as a dressing gown of sorts.

TIA 🙏

I can’t find exactly what you’re looking for, because - as you said - fashion, but it strikes me that you’d want a men’s cardigan anyway. And that much wool is expensive. Eg:

https://www.drakes.com/products/camel-lambswool-shawl-collar-cardigan

Would you really want it dragging around a hospital - and then needing washing or dry cleaning as soon as you’re home? I’d suggest either something throwaway from Primark (a great big cosy hoodie from the men’s’ department?) or something pre-owned. (But freeze it for a few days first.)

I’m sorry about the surgery. I once spent three whole days desperately searching for the perfect dressing gown before a hospital stay years ago.

I'm not any good at links but have a look at Woolover UK and House of Bruar you might find something there.

I hope your surgery goes well

Koulibiak · 20/05/2026 23:05

@NorWouldTilly thank you for the link - that cardigan is gorgeous but I’m a slim size 8/10 and would be dwarfed by men sizes.

@Goldenboysmumoooh good shout about House of Bruar, I’d forgotten about them. This https://www.houseofbruar.com/chamonix-hood-coat-gw01308cream/ is the nearest I’ve found to what I want, I just wished it had a belt. Not sure why the belt matters, but I really want it 🤷🏼‍♀️. Maybe I need to compromise - I love the hoodie style.

There are longer length cardigans here

Thank you - very luxurious but not really what I have in mind (chunky cable knit)

So the House of Bruar one is perfect except for belt? Do you realise how really easy it would be to source similar or identical wool and knit a belt? Can you knit?

Koulibiak · 21/05/2026 06:36

BuddhaAtSea · 21/05/2026 06:28

this, but it doesn’t have buttons

Thank you, I’ve never heard of that brand. That’s really nice - I just wished it wasn’t open front

That’s an idea. Yes I can knit

where I live there used to be a wool shop where they had people who could knit things to order so might be worth trying something like this. Or have a look at knitting patterns and see if there is anyone in the local community who could help, for a good knitter you would be surprised at how quickly they can knit something….. hope your surgery goes well!

NorWouldTilly · 21/05/2026 06:41

Possibly, @Koulibiak, you’re a bit distracted by your upcoming surgery but, if you think about it, closure of a garment is achieved by either buttons, or a belt. (Or a zip, obvs.) You may be asking a little too much of the knitwear industry to want both on one thing!

NorWouldTilly · 21/05/2026 06:42

I also would have recommended having something knitted to order - but I assumed you wouldn’t have time? It might be the best solution if you still have a few weeks to go.

Caterpillargirl23 · 21/05/2026 06:50

Woolovers do a pure wool coatigan, no belt though.

But all she has to do is buy the House of Bruar one - which is good except no belt - and knit or have knitted a belt. Which will take about an hour max!

I was about to say! LuneLondon are remarkably vague about their origins and location. Not at all surprised …

I do slightly wish people would check the legitimacy of sources before sharing them. Or stick to recommending shops they can personally vouch for, or that are at least well established with reputations to maintain.

LeftieRightsHoarder · 21/05/2026 09:00

Charity shops are a wonderful source of unfashionable clothes! Also cheap enough to buy for short-term use, then wash and re-donate.
Best of luck with the operation xx

And of clothes moths 😬

I wish people would look to British and Irish knitters using local wool. The traditions are genuinely excellent.

NorWouldTilly · 21/05/2026 09:04

Moths are the reason I recommended freezing any pre-owned purchases before introducing them to your wardrobe.

Woolovers do a pure wool coatigan, no belt though.

You can use a long lightweight scarf (cotton, viscose or polyester ‘silk’) as a tie belt. A patterned one looks good on a plain-colour cardigan, or a plain one on a patterned cardigan. You can pack a few to ring the changes, as they take up hardly any room.

Best of luck with the surgery xx
