At 57 , is Botox or filler worth considering for an average face

Mydogisacat · 18/05/2026 13:53

l’m 57 and considering Botox and possibly a filler. I mentioned it to my very glamorous SIL and she said it’s a waste of money if you’re not an attractive person to begin with. 😱 Is she right? I thought I was average but she put me right. Are cosmetic enchantments only worth it for someone who is beautiful to start start . She also said the clinic will not be used to seeing women who look like me art my age and I will be disappointed by the lack of improvement.

It’s been a brutal few years for me , my DS (18) was diagnosed with cancer in 2024 ( now in remission) . I just wanted a refresh , is it a waste of time / money.

I'm just sending you a big hug, she may have a wrinkle free face but also has an ugly soul x

Mydogisacat · 18/05/2026 15:01

@Chiefangel She is my husband’s sister.

I don’t like Botox even on ‘beautiful’ people. It makes them look odd and a bit creepy with the lack of facial expressions.
You don’t need one! But do treat yourself to regular facials, a nice haircut to see if that boosts your confidence.

Wow she didn't hold back did she! It's completely up to you OP. It's not worth it for me (I'm an embrace your wrinkles kind of person) but it might be for you. Why not give it a go and see what you think?

Exactly the SIL is being nasty. Up to you OP.

TFImBackIn · 18/05/2026 15:15

It sounds as though she's jealous on a lot of levels and couldn't even rein it in when your son was ill. Shame on her.

What does your husband say about it?

He thinks she is a terrible person who is married to a racist @TFImBackIn , he could happily cut them off but it’s more trouble than it’s worth in my opinion. Less contact definitely, we can go for months without seeing each other.

She's wrong about being 'beautiful' to start with, that sounds like nonsense or her misinterpretation.

Clinicians, who are any good at what they do, won't want to give botox if the botox is not going to achieve a realistic result or one that doesn't compliment the whole face.

For example, having a smooth forehead looks unnatural when the rest of the face is wrinkly. So, a client won't be happy with the results because they will expect a smooth forehead to do something for their overall face that it won't do.

It's best to talk to a practitioner that is honest and specialises in overall face structure. They may not recommend botox or filler but something else we don't even know is available. They may recommend one or the other or both. Everyone is very individual so it's best to find someone who practices with that in mind.

Mummblebee · 18/05/2026 15:50

What a cow ! Have a consultation OP.

MegMortimer · 18/05/2026 15:57

I agree with PP your SIL is as jealous as hell. I didn't start botox until I was mid 50's and I love it: it has lifted my brows, opened my eyes and smoothed my forehead . I had lost some definition in my chin and I had filler there plus in my cheeks. I feel so much better now, and I'm no oil painting but I'm an improved version of me.

Ask the advice of an aesthetician, they're used to understanding how to replace lost facial volume.

Needaglowup · 18/05/2026 15:59

Your SIL is a bitch , go to a medical trained anaesthetics practitioner , Talk to them about your concerns try a bit of Botox and see what you think they may tell you to do micro needling or chemical peels If a treatment makes you feel better and gives you a bit more confidence, that’s a win

Squarehairbear · 18/05/2026 16:17

She sounds awful OP. And she's talking absolute nonsense obvs. Also (and I accept this is a bit of a digression but..) 'attractive' is very subjective and tends to change with age/life stages. Barring a tiny minority of people who are unequivocally beautiful throughout their lives, it tends to shift and change a lot based on how people age, how they dress, confidence, fashions in what is and isn't considered beautiful. Lots of people who are considered conventionally beautiful in their teens and 20s don't seem to retain an enduring appeal, maybe because there was never really much to them apart from a pretty face. While other people who were considered 'mid' in their youth, turn into v stylish, attractive older women. Anyway, back to your OP - if fillers/botox will give you a confidence boost then go for it and try to have as little contact as poss with the horrendous SIL who is obviously v jealous of you.

Squarehairbear · 18/05/2026 16:20

Meant to add, I'm so sorry for what you have been through in recent years and so glad your DS is in remission now.

Actually can't get over what a horror your SIL must be to have said that to you.

Kisskiss · 18/05/2026 16:27

She doesn’t sound very nice..
what are you thinking about doing? Botox is good for lines but I have been following plastic surgeons and derms or IG who said that filler doesn’t always end up getting absorbed, but can migrate and or have nodules form over the injection sites…
been looking into other things like RF and laser treatments which also work for tightening

Ifyounevergiveup · 18/05/2026 16:28

Buttercupmoon · 18/05/2026 14:00

Well you can tell your SIL that she can't Botox away her ugly personality. What a hideous thing to say. I would stop talking to her to start and then you might feel better about yourself. She sounds awful.

I couldn’t agree more with @Buttercupmoon and I’m livid on your behalf. I also agree entirely with @rosemarypetticoat . Go and see a good aesthetician and basically say, here’s my face, what do you think? If you’re just starting your tweakment journey she may well start you off with exfoliation, or other such, as well as/instead of Botox but my dear…at 60 I’ve been having Botox just once a year since I was 50 (I’m lucky, I metabolise it slowly) and trust me, as long as you stay subtle everybody over 40 looks better with it, if by better you mean younger. It doesn’t just do lines, it’s the little lift which makes a huge difference to the face. I routinely have my elevens done and just this week I’ve treated myself to a Nefertiti neck lift, because I’ve just got my first pension and why the hell not. You go for it, this stuff is supposed to be light hearted and fun, just enjoy finding out/trying new things and don’t listen to that CF! xx

Sashya · 18/05/2026 16:34

@Mydogisacat
So happy for your son and you!

And yes - skin care, including botox or fillers - can help anyone look more rested, fresher, and lift up your mood. Do not listen to your strange SIL.
Majority of people who come to cosmetic dermatologists are women who want exactly what you want.

There are so many choices around. Personally - I'd not go to a spa that offers botox/fillers. I'd look for a dermatologist who does cosmetic procedures, as those are medical professionals and they can best advise what you can consider - given your skin type, facial muscles structure, etc.
Do you have any other friends? Many people do tweakments these days, so you should be able to find a friendlier person to recommend someone.

As to people who say - people look unnatural, frozen, etc - this is exactly why I won't go to an unqualified person doing botox at a spa, etc. As this is not the result you'll have if you see a person who knows what they are doing.

ClaredeBear · 18/05/2026 16:42

Putting your evil sil aside, it’s all very dependent upon what you want and what you’ve got, so quite a few variables - and as one PP pointed out, surgery might even be an option. If you want to achieve a “fresher” face you should do your research and go for it. It’s about how you feel at the end of the day.

StephensLass1977 · 18/05/2026 16:44

One of my SILs once told me I looked "well into your 40s" when I was 34, and I was well known back then for looking a lot younger than my age.

Needless to say I don't talk to her, nor any of my SILs, ever.

Some people are just miserable bitches, and I hate this word but your SIL is just jealous! Botox only for "attractive" people, what the actual fuck? It's for anyone who damn well wants it!

OntheupsoIam · 18/05/2026 16:48

Dear god, your SIL…. Ignore. Why not try a some Botox initially it can lift and smooth your face for a ‘fresher’ look. It always makes me feel a bit better about myself - like a good face of make up.

Charlize43 · 18/05/2026 16:56

Prosecco is cheaper. After my 5th glass, I KNOW I am gorgeous and could be a supermodel. I'm 59, so you're never too old.

Botox and filler is fine if you want that Nicole face like formica Kidman look.

Purplecatshopaholic · 18/05/2026 17:05

Jesus, who needs enemies with that around! I suggest you see less of the complete cow who is your, clearly jealous, SIL, op. If you want Botox, give it a go and see. She just doesn’t want you to feel good about yourself. I get it and love it. Others don’t, and don’t. It’s up to you. And btw, no amount of Botox or filler is ever going to make her a nice person. Just sayin’..

MyFavouritePlace · 18/05/2026 17:14

Wow, What a horrible person she is. Just a nasty piece of work.
So glad your son is in remission and doing so well academically too, you must be very proud.
If want to do anything to your make you feel better you absolutely should look into it.
Good luck x

Your SIL is a bitch!!!!
Go to a few clinics, have a chat and ask to see before and after cases of women similar to your age.
A good, professional clinic will be able to advise you of and show examples of realistic expectations/results

This old chestnut. Botox done by a skilled practitioner doesn’t ‘freeze’ the face or result in a lack of facial expressions.
