Jeans again. Which brands allow more room for hips and thighs?

This feels like déjà vu. Perhaps I wrote this same post not long ago. I can't remember.

I am failing to buy new jeans . if I buy my 'right' size I often can't get jeans over my thighs and hips. Not that they are enormous but they're not straight up straight down. So, they'll be an inch too small at the waist because they haven't actually reached my waist. If I go up a size so they glide nicely over my legs and hips, they gape at the back by at least 3 inches. 😩

I know Hollister do a curvy jean - so you buy the right size waist but they add a few inches over the top leg area. They're hard to find in stock and recently they are making more low waist styles (aimed at younger people obviously) which I won't buy.

Are there any clothes brands known to be more generous in the leg/hip area?

If I buy wide leg jeans - they tend to make them wider all over and they look stupid behind my knee and down. I've got some very wide leg jeans from Mango, with a pleat at the front, which work, because the fabric is soft and drapey but I want some normal everyday straight leg jeans. Just one pair. is it too much to ask? 😭

Abercrombie and Fitch do a couple of straight leg styles and they have the Curve option for smaller waist/larger hip combo.

I’ve got their 90s Relaxed Straight which are quite wide, certainly more so then they look on the website, so you might prefer the standard straight.

John Lewis And/Or range

Twoshoesnewshoes · 18/05/2026 09:35

I find Zara ones have good hip allowance!

Cantonet · 18/05/2026 10:58

M&S at the moment.

Bristolandlazy · 18/05/2026 11:08

Marks and Spencers.

DramaAlpaca · 18/05/2026 11:29

Another vote for M&S.

Sparkletastic · 18/05/2026 11:35

Tu jeans are great but depends more on cut than brand imo. High waisted wide leg or flares balance me out best.

Lifestooshort71 · 18/05/2026 11:40

I tried on a load at M&S and put them all back. I've just bought a pair from River Island for £52 called high-waisted relaxed flare. I will pay to have shortened but apart from that they're super, comfy to wear. They had a huge selection and the staff were very helpful, worth a look?

Maybe she’s tried the ones from last time and has narrowed down her issue, or wants to see what’s out there nigh on six months later? What a bizarre thing to AS about.

StationJack · 18/05/2026 12:17

Not at all, @SoScarletItWas , there might be useful suggestions on it.
I was trying to help.

Ah sorry. Yes, I am still looking after failed attempts. I'm in my brain fog era and fires this off before checking my previous posts. Apologies for repetition but I always think these posts help lots of people. It's a common problem.

I've seen Ambela jeans advertised on my Instagram, they look great but I'm a bit skint at the moment so not able to afford.

StationJack · 18/05/2026 13:10

No worries. There are so many different styles and brands on jeans.

Levi's curve range
NYDJ
High street shops but you'll probably need to try lots. Somewhere like Fatface.

Next do some styles in hourglass for curvy figures.

They do a high rise shaping one that's nice.

I used to have a problem a bit like this because my thighs were quite muscular. Anyway, if you can be bothered, you could buy some jeans a size up and then get a tailor to take them in up the back seam and make the waistband smaller. If you get cheap supermarket jeans, the total cost might not end up being any more than buying a perfectly-fitting expensive pair of jeans (if one existed), you just have to get over the annoyance of potentially paying more for the alteration than the jeans. For ages my best jeans were men's ones I'd bought in a charity shop and had altered.

minipie · 18/05/2026 13:31

I had exactly this issue for years when it was all skinnies and straight leg. But now wide leg and barrel leg are in style and they work brilliantly for small waist and large bum and thighs! So I suggest making the most of these styles while they last.

For ages I didn’t like barrel jeans but if you try the less extreme versions they actually look pretty good. Look for tapered leg for a similar style but slimmer cut.

If you do want straight leg then try Levi’s or Everlane which do ranges specifically for a high waist to thigh ratio.

MaJoady · 18/05/2026 14:12

I like Levi's cinch range. Can size to fit my hips and then use the poppers on the waist to pull it in so they fit

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 18/05/2026 21:02

I really rate the Abercrombie curve love range and have several pairs. I’m a UK 12 and get 29” waist. They often have offers on (it’s not a bank holiday here in Scotland next week but I think it is in England, so I bet they will do a promotion for that) and also do a loyalty scheme where you accrue points that can be used as money off.

MannequinsArePeopleToo · 18/05/2026 21:09

I have 2 pairs of Levi curve and they're really good.
