Which outfit would you wear to a wedding at a country house hotel?

Dear Style gurus, Can I ask what outfit you’d wear to a wedding please, country house hotel. I’m mid 50s.

my family are divided. I think the blue dress, my husband and daughter think the khaki one, the stripy skirt and top is no one’s favourite but liked by all.

I’m torn, and I’m not usually, simply as my family don’t like the blue one and I do. I suspect as it’s not my usual style..

I don’t actually like the top of the khaki dress though I love the skirt, so mixed feelings there. It’s elegant and urban.

The blue is better for the event I think, and I like it, it’s nice, but I don’t love it.

I don’t like the striped one, sorry.

Wishing you a lovely day, whichever one you choose.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 14/05/2026 14:09

Khaki for me, it is beautiful on you and very easy to add a small linen jacket or light smart summer coat for day time especially if there is a church wedding.
But it may be that the shoes are putting me off the blue dress which is very country house wedding but these do tend to be quite glam in my experience.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 14/05/2026 14:09

The khaki is more beach wedding and the colour is very boring for a wedding I think. How would you spruce it up? If you had a hat and good jewellery it might work. The striped outfit is just wrong for a wedding and looks like another hot holiday outfit, not a wedding in a country house. The blue dress is great with navy or pink accessories? Much easier to look chic with that one.

Whysnothingsimple · 14/05/2026 14:11

You look stunning in the khaki one which is probably driving your husbands view.

But my vote is definitely for the blue one as the most appropriate

As you look so stunning in the Khaki one, get your DH to take you somewhere really nice where you can wear it and he gets to see you in it.

Yes I suspect it’s just it’s so different to my normal style, I do feel comfortable in it…

Go wild and just wear it 😀

Safarisagoody · 14/05/2026 14:27

Gosh the jury is really split, even the vote is fairly equal. On blue v khaki. Think I’m hearing the khaki is more flattering, the blue maybe more country house appropriate,

usually I dress and go,but my family threw me, and seems the vote on here is split too, which I guess means only the striped one will be a mistake….

Post a better pic of the blue with appropriate shoes and see if you have a light jacket/coat for the khaki?

Either way, you should definitely buy the khaki.

ForPinkDuck · 14/05/2026 14:46

There all nice. Decide on the day op.but i liked the patterned dresses as they are more joyful.

Lomonald · 14/05/2026 14:46

Wear the one you like best you have asked opinions but I think wear the one you feel best in.

ForSassyDreamer · 14/05/2026 14:57

You look stunning in the khaki! The blue is much more 'country house' vibe. Its the safe option. However, I think given how amazing you look in the khaki, you should go with that (add accesories) and enjoy every moment of looking fabulous. Also, if both husband/daughter favour the khaki, then I'd trust their judgement. They will both want you to look good.

I also like the stripey, however it doesn't strike me as wedding outfit, more a lovely lunch or special daytime event.

I do echo the thoughts of others around the shoes ... swap those for a different option if you go for the blue

Yes even though I prefer khaki, I think they are both nice and would both be a good choice.

I’m afraid I agree with the PP who said to burn the stripy one (but I’m sure there are things in my wardrobe you’d say the same about!)

measuretwicecutonce · 14/05/2026 15:00

Khaki, don’t like the blue.

Sassylovesbooks · 14/05/2026 15:41

Definitely the blue with plain nude shoes.

patioh · 14/05/2026 16:00

It's hard to judge from those photos. I suspect all 3 would look a lot better in better lighting!

Floisme · 14/05/2026 16:23

I think the striped outfit has the most potential, e.g. if you swapped that ribbon belt I bet it would immediately look more striking. However I can see that it still might not quite be right for a country house wedding brief plus, as others have said, the fabric might be too heavy. The blue dress isn't something I'd wear myself but I do like it. I'm afraid I don't like the khaki dress at all - this has nothing to do with your arms, which look fantastic but I'm one of those people who notice clothes first and body second.

So blue.

user464632168 · 14/05/2026 16:24

Any other options?

I really don't like the blue. It looks like it hits at the wrong length for you and the blue band and the ruffly bottom cut it in a strange way and are too much with the puffy sleeves. I actually think it would look better if it was hemmed right below the blue band.

I like the khaki but don't love the way the armholes are cut. I think they look a bit too deep. That said, you do have fabulous arms and I think it looks the best on you.

It might be the way you're posed, but the stripes are too wavy/not quite matching up for me. To me, it looks like the offspring of Grandpa's bathrobe mating with a Missoni dress. It does fit you well, though.

Different shoes with all three!

Safarisagoody · 14/05/2026 16:25

Can’t beleive I’ve split the style gurus! Am going to take both with me and see how I feel on the day, they are very light so no biggie really.

im still in two minds im edging to the blue but agree it is the safe choice. Tried both on and the khaki does look lovely in the right light, it’s silky so has a sheen to it.

No other options, this is it really, the only things that are vaguely suitable in my wardrobe. Well I have another one, which I love, but it’s a white base on the floral and my daughter is absolutely adamant it’s too white,

I think with a navy velvet blazer it would be fine. But think the jury will be out.

Yeah she’s adamant I can’t wear it, too white and not worth it that people maybe side eying me thinking why is she in white.

ToastSafeFromMothsAndDogs · 14/05/2026 16:43

Khaki with the right accessories.

The white one is the wrong shape on you.

I really don’t like flowery polyester.

@Safarisagoody How would you accessorise the khaki one? It’s not at all a country house vibe but what does the invitation say? What jewellery, shoes and bag have you got? What about a jacket? Khaki just feels a bit boring for a wedding. Can you not buy a new dress?

Ha! No I’m not buying a new dress 😄

khaki would be nude shoes and my normal simple jewellery, with a cognac coloured velvet blazer or a cream wrap. Bag is the Same either way pale tan small clutch. The khaki I think photographed badly, it’s silky so shimmery if that makes sense.

no dress code on the invite, so I guess typical wedding attire.

I suspect you'd get different responses if you uploaded a photo of the khaki dress with the blazer, as it sounds like the perfect day to evening wedding outfit.
