What should I wear to London this weekend?

Pureclass · 13/05/2026 20:47

Coming to London from NI this coming weekend (Sat - Mon).

Will be Ryanair hand luggage only so really limited.

Live in NI and atm its flitting between absolutely freezing and jumper/tshirt weather.

Going to Chelsea/Belgravia to see the on street floral displays and to 1 show. Shopping, some nice food and a bit of wandering about.

Had hopes for nice dresses but think it's possibly a bit too cold?

Atm planning to bring

Slightly mad trousers, tshirt, long denim shacket

Jeans, vest, shirt

Jeans, tshirt/jumper, denim shacket

Trench coat.

Trainers.

Too hot/too cold? Thoughts?

Are your trainers waterproof?

Do you have an umbrella?

Certainty of rain F / Su / M. Likelihood on Sat.

I would take something that’s a little warmer than cotton / denim. Maybe tie a piece of knitwear around your shoulders or waist.

Pureclass · 13/05/2026 21:16

Trainers are waterproof. I live in Northern Ireland things have to be

The denim is not really a shacket is more like a long denim dress/shirt but id wear the waterproof trench over it.

Could bring leggings for under jeans - dont really have any other trouser options other than cropped wide leg black or lighter more summery trousers.

Will probably have to buy an umbrella is needed as mine is too big for the very mini underneath case.

We booked being sure the weather would be nice. Only ever been to London in the depths of winter before.

Trousers

awfulapril · 13/05/2026 21:17

It's just average early spring weather
don't predict any summer

awfulapril · 13/05/2026 21:17

Also, you're not standing out in the rain, if it rains you go inside

Salome61 · 13/05/2026 21:19

My friend in Amersham texted me just now - freezing rain and golf ball sized hail. Do bring warm waterproof stuff.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 13/05/2026 21:25

Crazy hail today and cold wind, mixed with not warm sunshine so pack sunglasses, layers will be your friend

It middle of spring and it bloody freezing!

IgnoreIt · 13/05/2026 21:30

I was there a couple of days ago. Changeable weather. I wore a parka, culottes, thin knit jumpers and boots.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 13/05/2026 21:32

It’s not going to be that warm and will rain. Jumper definitely. What you’re planning to bring is fine but I’d also bring an umbrella. It was stormy today (thunder) and hailing too.

We got thunder in SE London too. Cat hates it and hides from it.

If you’re near eg a Uniqlo in London you can always buy trousers.

DelphiniumBlue · 13/05/2026 21:37

This week in London I've been wearing jeans, very light vest, tshirt and then a jacket( indoor type) or shirt on top. I might swap out the jacket or shirt for a jumper or cardi or sweatshirt with a trench or padded showerproof jacket on top, and I always have a thin wool scarf. Don't bother with an umbrella, they're not much use on busy streets, and remember the tube is always boiling.
You won't actually be outside much if it's raining, so a showerproof jacket and a hat should probably be sufficient. Layers and sunglasses as Unexpectedlysinglemum said are always handy, as are a pair og fingerless gloves to keep in your pocket. The mad trousers sound like a good idea.

HelenaWilson · 13/05/2026 21:38

Something warm.

If you have a hoodie or hooded coat, I'd bring that rather than the trench coat and forget the brolly. Umbrellas are a nuisance anywhere busy, and as pp said, you won't be walking about in the rain - you'll head into a cafe or bookshop or jump on a bus.

SallyAnnDrivesACar · 13/05/2026 21:46

Was mental weather today !! Sunny, pissing down with rain and dark sky's.. and sunny again 5 minutes after!

OP I wear jeans, trainers, a top and a coat in London.

BlondeFool · 13/05/2026 21:47

Layers and an umbrella

NattyKnitter116 · 13/05/2026 21:52

Layers and a brolly. Today it has cycled between biblical rain, hail, thunder, lightning, and I was wearing hat and gloves, then later on some warm sunshine and I saw a double rainbow. Prediction for the weekend and in to Monday is more of the same. Fantastic. I’d try and plan things to do indoors!

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 13/05/2026 22:30

@Salome61 I’m near Amersham! It was golf ball sized hail.

Id wear jeans, take tights, shirt and a pullover. Then raincoat. You can wear jeans in the evening. Sunday will be wet so I’d take a long line raincoat. Temp around 14 but it won’t feel warm.

Id bin dresses. What are mad trousers? Just take a pair of black ones and a silk shirt for restaurants. T shirt and pullover is another day look. Theatre - anything will do. Shirt and jeans? Take layers and trainers all the way.

HelenaWilson · 13/05/2026 22:36

Just take a pair of black ones and a silk shirt for restaurants.

I'd want something more than a silk shirt. Aircon can be vicious. And silk isn't really necessary unless the restaurant is quite posh. A nice shirt or top with cardi will do.

fashionqueen0123 · 13/05/2026 22:39

The weather is crazy here at the moment. One minute I’m cold and it’s raining then the sun comes out and I’m sweating taking layers off.
Supposed to be 27c end of next week! You wouldn’t believe that today.

Bring layers. You’d be fine in leggings or jeans and a T-shirt with a jacket and light scarf.

user464632168 · 13/05/2026 22:43

I went through about ten different weather systems on an hour dog walk. Warm and sunny, cold and rainy, vicious wind, hail, thunder, then sun again...

Layers. Bring a warm jumper. I find a baseball hat is more useful than an umbrella.

Hope you have fun!

Summer26 · 13/05/2026 23:10

I am here in London now. Colder & rainer than I had planned for. Have been wearing me&Em trousers, Pure sweaters and a trench with boots. Cold for May. I spend a lot of time in Australia and the SE so maybe I feel it more, but collegues have said the same. I visit every couple of months. Hail today as pp mentioned.

Pureclass · 14/05/2026 05:40

Below are the mad trousers and the denim shirt

Thanks all!

I think ill bring these, jeans, maybe a silk shirt, a tshirt, a cashmere / knit jumper and my trench coat.

Plus thermal/layers

Im a bit limited in coats/jackets atm - everything else is too heavy or too light.

Will bring cashmere wrist warmers and probably a baseball hat rather than an umbrella.

Love the trousers! Where are they from?
Though I'd be worried about them dragging in puddles if it's wet.

Watercooler · 14/05/2026 05:50

I was wearing two jumpers yesterday. Personally I always use an umbrella in London over a coat because the tube is sweltering with a coat.
