Low-key wedding dress ideas/Roland Mouret sizing

I’ve started looking for a wedding dress - not booked yet but very, very low key next year - 2nd marriage for us both and likely a family meal and night in a hotel for us.

I’m 45, 5ft6, hourglass size 14, grey hair and olive skin/brown eyes. Suit bodycon (appreciate not in fashion rn!), midi or maxi length and like structured, modern looks. Ideally sleeves or shoulders covered, though could add a caplet or similar if sleeveless.

I found this Roland Mouret which is a bargain, and assume I would need to size up to a 16?

Or if anyone has other dresses/designers to suggest -
My budget is around 1k (my dream would be this 5k Vivienne Westwood or this). The only other I have liked online is this (bit ott)

Thank you! I am getting ahead of myself but if it fits then I was thinking of something like these for shoes.

What time of the year are you getting married? Will open toed be chilly or not?

The roland mouret is just gorgeous. Based on your description of yourself it will look amazing.

Size up and have it taken in for perfect look x

late spring, and we’ll be inside much of the time / will be afternoon ceremony, early dinner with family and close friends then a night in a hotel.

DP is my height but not worried about being taller because of heels, would just like relatively comfortable (so not sky high) and the right look for the dress.

That dress is so lovely, stunning

In case you need a shoe alternative, these are lovely, and very comfortable.

I honestly think a slingback or a pump would suit the dress more than the shoe you posted. I think a more delicate profile of shoe would be more in keeping with the super-elegant overall look of this dress (which is gorgeous). Are you carrying a clutch or a bouquet? You could even go a bit Carrie Bradshaw with some blue Manolo-style satin pumps.

MyFavouritePlace · 11/05/2026 18:22

Ooh agree with @Netaporter think slingback / pump will be lovely with this dress

Ooh I would love a really special pair of shoes, especially if the dress fits I’ll have come in below my budget. I’ll have a bouquet, but something very simple.

On shoes, I can’t wear ones without a strap at the heel, must be sling back or pump.

You have reminded me of a lovely Manolo Blahnik fact - when he was a child he used to catch lizards and make little shoes for them from tin foil.

Both shoes are fab, but I think the wine pair would go beautiful with the dress.

MyFavouritePlace · 11/05/2026 19:47

Agree both shoes are fab and think the wine coloured ones have the edge. So pretty.

Sassylovesbooks · 11/05/2026 19:52

I love the Roland Mouret dress, it's much nicer than the others.

Allseeingallknowing · 11/05/2026 19:57

Why is the VW one so expensive? It’s not that special, and is polyamide, even though it’s silk lined.

Lovely colour but it is unlucky to wear white/red together (something to do with blood and bandages my Nan used to say so probably an old wives tale) and those shoes come up quite far on the front of the foot which can look a bit heavy on some. The green ones are delightful in shape but I think wouldn’t be right with the dress.

My absolute faves for a lovely low-key but second time around wedding are the Alaia optical illusion heart shoes. They come as a pump or a slingback and different heel heights.

Jimmy Choo has some lovely pumps/slingbacks and sparkly shoes too.

If you are near London, it is worth a trip to Bond Street to their showroom so you can try the different heights. It’s opposite Jimmy Choo too (and they always dish out the champagne when you shop ;-)

I’m late to this thread but would have recommended to size up and expect to get it altered at the waist for an hourglass so pleased to see that you got the last 16. RM dresses are beautiful and so well-made, it will be well worth altering rather than returning!

PermanentTemporary · 12/05/2026 07:47

Those Alaia shoes are beautiful.

WhisperingAngelisnotbad · 12/05/2026 08:10

I also love the RM dress, many congratulations!

Tell me about it! There is a cream just-below-the-knee strapless sheath by Mouret at the back of my wardrobe. I’ve been trying to slim into it for years. I am reliably a 14 in other brands but this is either a 16 or an 18 and I still can’t wear it …

I think the Roland Mouret is by far the nicest of the 3 - go for it!

I do too - and there is only 14 so go with that (quickly!)

The other too actually look a bit Barbie/younger bride I think.

I think the Mouret is a good choice.

Did the dress arrive, what’s it like/the fit? It’s absolutely perfect 💗 love the idea of a little touch of blue on the shoe
