Recommendations for non frumpy but comfy bras for fuller busts age 50+

Windywuss · 09/05/2026 11:13

I'm in my fifties and need some new decent bras.

I feel a bit matronly. I'm 38D and size 18.

Use to like a plunge but I'm spilling over a lot with bras I've had recently.

Do I need a minimiser? Some of these are a lot of fabric though and I don't like the sports bra/crop top type because I just feel boiling hot and gross in them.

I don't want monoboob like snag or lemonade dolls for bigger busts.

I would love cotton if poss, maybe without wires because they just seem to come out and stab me in no time now and preferably not completely frumpy. A few years ago I used to feel nice in pretty bras... But I need them functional.

Am I asking too much?

M and S get mixed reviews these days and also my experience that they feel a bit cheap now.

Was looking at Triumph maybe?

I really like the M&S Amelia minimiser bra. I’ve worn £100+ bras for years but have recently switched to these.

I've worn the full cup version of these for years. Excellent value.

I have recently started to buy from Miss Mary of Sweden but you have to know your size .
I used their measuring instructions and it worked for me .
They are not the cheapest but they wash very well

GandTtwice · 09/05/2026 11:28

You need a Bravissimo shop they have loads of different styles and brands including their own. It's hard for other people to recommend a specific bra style without knowing your shape.
You might even find you've been wearing the wrong size if you've been previously measured in m & s

Windywuss · 10/05/2026 10:46

Thanks all. I've ordered an Amelia and I'll see how it feels.

I don't really manage getting to the shops these days for various reasons @GandTtwice but I'm sure that's good advice. I'll see how I go.

If you want to splash out on something beautiful then Empreinte , Prima Donna, or Maison Lejaby.

SuperGinger · 10/05/2026 17:08

Anyone tried Honeylovevor Hilaine?

Imtoooldforallthis · 10/05/2026 17:12

Recommended these a lot, not cotton and they are underwired but extremely comfortable.

There are many kinds of t shirt bras in m and s which might cover what you're looking for.

Windywuss · 12/05/2026 14:17

Well the Amelie just arrived and it's a terrible fit in my normal size. I'm going to send it back m might try a bigger cup 🙈

This is the problem with different brands. They are not consistent.

Blimey, my newer bras were £40. I thought that was enough..

MustUseAName · 12/05/2026 14:32

How much do people spend on bras? I’ve always been an M&S woman but I’ve also had success from Tu. Having recently lost weight, I thought I’d treat myself to a “better” fitting and bra. I went to the local independent and the cheapest, basic t-shirt bra was £100!!

Fortunately, the woman was with another customer so I could run away.

PartyQuestion30th · 12/05/2026 14:37

I went to a local lingerie shop - a local one not a chain - and asked for a non wired not too horrific looking bra for a maturer lady with a large bust (me) to give me a bit of 'oomph'. She suggested the Triumph Doreen - and it's really good. It's not pretty but I don't think it's awful either - and it helps hoick everything upwards again.

But I'd recommend an oldfashioned bra shop and put yourself in their hands (fnar fnar).

Monty36 · 12/05/2026 14:53

Many bras for bigger boobed women fail on the straps. Far too thin. They do make a difference despite what the idea they don’t.
Bravissimo may be a good place to have a look. Fantasie can do decent bras.

I have mostly bought M and S and I know exactly my size with them. I once bought Debenhams bra - didn't fit too small . I bought the Tu sleep bras in the M and S size - way too small. I think my M and S bras are about 20-25 pounds.

GreenLemonade · 12/05/2026 15:20

I second Bravissimo.

Lots of women wear the wrong size, I'm not saying you do but if you're spilling over your bras it's likely. It would be best to get fitted. Alternatively, order the same bra in lots of sizes to find out what fits best.

For what it's worth, I've been wearing panache blossom (or similar) for years and I love it but bras are very individual so it might not fit you as well as me.

I have lots of m and s bras in the past. I just think they vary, even within brands. Tu I have always had issues with so I don't buy those.

@PartyQuestion30thI don’t think the Doreen name helps does it? I’m going to have a look as I need a shake up.
OP, as a 34H I like the Molke Flexifit bras but the designs are mostly pretty ugly, I’ve got a few of the plainer ones but they seem to have very few on the website compared to a few
months ago.

macaroni234 · 12/05/2026 16:19

I really recommended working out your Bob size via their calculator. Google boob or bust calculator and checking out their Facebook page. You’ll get amazing advice about what bras to try for your size and Brastop is a great website for cheaper bras if you are D+.

MooBaggage · 12/05/2026 16:23

@CaramelEmporium I'm also a 34 H/HH and only wear Molke Flexifit and also frustrated that they have hardly any in stock these days - I really could do with replacing my very old, battered ones and am worried they're just not making them any more. Really don't want to go back to 'normal' bras...! Am keeping an eye on this thread just in case there are suggestions that are very like Molke.

Sculptress Bliss full cup. Yes it is underwired but the engineering on the cups is terrific too. Soft upper cup means no boob spillage.

I get mine from an Indie bra boutique.

Just bought 2 M&S minimiser bras and I LOVE them. Had put it off so long due to £.

They don’t look matronly. Comfy and hoik everything up.

I am 38DD - was a 34C on my wedding day 22 years ago 🥴🥴🥴.

Have accepted my fate.

Hellinnnnn · 12/05/2026 16:54

I went through a long phase of matronly shelf, then went to get properly fitted at Rigby & Peller. Got a primadonna bra which was £100 (and a heart attack due to the shock!) but it had transformed the way my clothes hang. It lifts and separates and seems to minimise too.
My sizing has completely changed with menopause and I spent loads of money chasing after a decent bra prior to this so I’m feeling the investment was worth it.

Windywuss · 16/05/2026 17:22

Got another Amelia going up a cup size. DD good grief. Much better. Will give it a test drive. Decent price if I need a few. Thanks.
