When someone complements you on an item of clothing and it’s second hand from Vinted or the charity shops, do you keep quiet and say thanks or tell them and how much it cost?

I tend to tell people how much it was and where from.

If someone compliments me on my clothes I just say thank you. Only if they asked me where it was from would I tell them. I try to just accept compliments without qualifying them.

canyon2000 · 05/05/2026 15:58

@Crwysmam I have been trying to figure out what this means!
Most of this was the jacket which was bent and this year’s model.

I'm a big fan of Vinted. If I'm complimented on something I usually just say thanks, no further explanations, but if asked I have no problem saying who it is made by and where I got it from.

Appalonia · 05/05/2026 17:00

I LOVE showing off my charity shop bargains!😁

FlexiSadie · 05/05/2026 17:01

I take pride in the fact all my clothes are secondhand!

SonyaLoosemore · 05/05/2026 17:02

'Thanks so much. It was a bargain on eBay'.

pinkspeakers · 05/05/2026 17:02

I love telling people how cheaply I got something from Vinted/charity shop!

I think probably "bent" = "bnwt" = brand new with tags?

JustGiveMeReason · 05/05/2026 17:40

It depends who.

A stranger, or slight acquaintance at a wedding or something, I'd say "Thank you"
Someone close to me, who knows I love a bargain, I'd say what a bargain it was.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 05/05/2026 17:41

I always say where I got it. I never say how much.

Am I weird?! If someone compliments something I'm wearing I don't tell them where it's from or how much it was unless they specifically ask, regardless of if I got it full price or discounted. I just say 'thanks' or maybe 'thanks, it's really comfy/warm/waterproof'

If I said to someone 'I love your jacket' and they said, thanks it was £250 from Hobbs I'd be a bit Confused

notacooldad · 05/05/2026 07:40

I just say thanks.

Im happy to tell if any one asks.

When Icompliment somone about a nice dress I dont need or want the low down of where it was from, how much it costs or if it has pockets. All I'm saying is that I like your dress, dont bore me with unnecessary details. I dont care.

Same here.

AccordingToWhom · 05/05/2026 19:15

I tell them because I like getting a bargain and I couldn't care less about expensive clothes.

curious79 · 05/05/2026 19:17

I used to do that British thing of thanking them profusely than talking about how I got it in a sale and spent 50p on it etc
now I give them a big fat thank you and agree with them

MargoLivebetter · 05/05/2026 19:23

I just say "thank you, I really like it too". If the other person really insisted on knowing where it was from, I would tell them but what I'd really want to say is "Mind your own business. You've just spoiled the compliment by being nosy."

When I compliment someone on an outfit or item of clothing they have chosen, I wouldn't be expecting them to tell me where they bought it and what they paid for it. I'm complimenting their choice, not on a fishing expedition for where they shop.

If they ask where I got it from, I will tell them. If they don't, I don't bother.

Same. I never volunteer where I've got things from but. It's not because I'm embarrassed at getting some from Vinted or eBay, but rather because some, for example Eponine or Casey Casey, are very pricey.

I never ask when I give compliments.

In its own way that's just as much boasting as if I told someone the price of my Eponine or Casey Casey dresses.

Sorry I didn’t check it and I’ve been at work all day. Yes it was bnwt.

My DS is a big fan of second hand clothes, not just because he’s currently a student. They love the faded well worn look.
My DH hoarded a load of Adidas and other sports labels from 80s. He claimed at the time that DS may want them when he was older, I wasn’t convinced. He was right and DS has regularly raided the back of DHs wardrobe where all these “classics” have been gathering dust for the last 30yrs.

He wore a classic Umbro top from the 90s to an Oasis concert last year and received loads of compliments from the aging Oasis fans around him. Men are just as obsessed with fashion as women and one bloke thought it was a copy because it was the wrong colour. DS informed him that it had faded a lot after 30yrs of washing. To me it’s a faded old training top but apparently it’s cool.

Original vintage Adidas is very popular at the moment and worth good money on the second hand market.

SwatTheTwit · 06/05/2026 12:57

I keep quiet, DP will tell anyone that will listen. He loves letting everyone know it was a bargain.

FruAashild · 06/05/2026 13:14

I never say the price but always say where I got it whether that's 'Vinted bargain, thanks' or 'local designer thanks'. It's obligatory surely. Having said that, not every second hand thing is cheap, particularly if you're talking vintage designer. Websites with good search engines have made it much easier to find what you want in the second hand /preloved / offcuts market which has made it more acceptable - although back in the 90s we all bought second hand clothes as students so it's not a new thing it's just more easily and widely available now.

dudsville · 06/05/2026 15:15

I'm very proud of my sale and vinted items!

Makemineacosmo · 06/05/2026 15:28

I love a bargain and don't mind at all telling someone I got something on Vinted. My latest was a brand new M & S blazer from Vinted for £15, I've never had so many compliments on an item of clothing.
