When someone complements you on an item of clothing and it’s second hand from Vinted or the charity shops, do you keep quiet and say thanks or tell them and how much it cost?

I tend to tell people how much it was and where from.

I would say the brand and that it came from Vinted/charity shop. I wouldn't say how much as I think the understanding would be that it was at Vinted prices. 95% of my clothes come from Vinted at the moment!

Londonnight · 05/05/2026 08:09

I'm quite happy to let people know where I have got things from. A lot of my clothes come from charity shops.

NineFiftyNine · 05/05/2026 08:09

Always say - I'm proud of my second hand bargains.

NeedATreat · 05/05/2026 08:11

i always tell people truthfully! I lost a very large amount of weight and for a long time during that process, I only ever bought second hand clothes because it just seemed pointless spending lots of money on temporary clothes. I will say, though, that it got incredibly boring and I was glad to get back to buying things I wanted and liked, rather than whatever was suitable and available in my size on Vinted

Floisme · 05/05/2026 08:11

Of course I tell them although, if it's a friend, I don't need to as they know where I shop.

Goditsmemargaret · 05/05/2026 08:16

Well I'm clearly a complete weirdo because when somebody compliments anything about me I beam and say thank you. What's with the boring explanations? If they ask I tell them but I can't imagine anyone is interested.

Waitingforthesunnydays · 05/05/2026 08:35

Why would I lie?? To pretend I bought it new? No I would never do that lol. I’d say I got it off Vinted and probably brag about the bargain I got. I’m very vocal about my love of Vinted, and the fact that these days, I no longer buy new clothes ever. Everything comes from Vinted. I don’t know what kind of circles you move in, but in normal society, buying second-hand & vintage clothes is the way to go. Fast fashion like Shein is considered a lot more shameful than buying second hand

SlinkyMalinkyy · 05/05/2026 08:37

I always tell them 😃

Crwysmam · 05/05/2026 08:39

I’ve always been a charity shop regular so Vinted has become my favourite online shop. My latest purchase are a pair of wide leg trousers, I have a pair in a different colour that I bought 20 years ago , timeless classic that I roll out every summer. When I bought them 20yrs ago I wanted a pair in navy blue but without the internet I couldn’t locate a pair. I was over the moon when I found them on Vinted, even though they are probably 20yrs old.
I went out for lunch dressed head to toe in Vinted, original value of my ensemble would have been over £1k, total cost to me was £250. Most of this was the jacket which was bent and this year’s model.

The friend I was lunching with is also a big fan. Both of us could afford to buy new but old habits die hard and spending vast amounts on brand new is not easy. Maybe it’s the reason we can afford new.

Didimum · 05/05/2026 08:41

I won’t go into cost, but I will say when it’s second hand.

CoastalCalm · 05/05/2026 08:41

I just say thanks but would tell them if they expressly asked where it’s from

tempname1234 · 05/05/2026 08:42

The price is never relevant not which store it is from. The brand would be the only helpful piece of information. By all means, pass that on. If they ask further info, tell them it’s from a few years ago as in not in store now.

nothing else is relevant it’s just over sharing

Twilightstarbright · 05/05/2026 08:58

I think it’s good to normalise buying secondhand. However at places like work etc I just say thanks. Or in a longer conversation I’ll mention I buy most of my stuff on vinted.

henlake7 · 05/05/2026 09:00

TBH Im more embaressed if Ive spent alot of money on something (working class to the core!!LOL).
If I got a bargain I'll shout it from the rooftops!😆

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 05/05/2026 09:01

Tell the truth, love a Vinted bargain.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 05/05/2026 10:42

Definitely tell them! There’s a second hand junk shop which sells clothes where I have some finds too.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 05/05/2026 10:43

I was super pleased when a Hobbs summer dress I saw and bought in the window of a more expensive charity shop was on sale on eBay for more.

mondaytosunday · 05/05/2026 07:29

Tell them! 90% of my DD’s clothes and all of her shoes/boots are from charity shops and she looks amazing (about 50% are from US thrift/charity shops).

Similar with my NDN/friend’s 22 year old daughter. All charity vintage and looks fab.

Cheeseanddigestivebiscuits · 05/05/2026 10:52

I only buy clothes second hand so everyone who knows me even slightly will know I either got it from the charity shop or Vinted lmao. Why would I be ashamed of that? Shopping second hand is very much in atm

SpiralSister · 05/05/2026 14:53

I’m a loud and proud Vinted Queen. I love turning people onto it.

Unsustainable fashion is very much out.

EnglishBreakfastTea1 · 05/05/2026 15:26

I’ve bought a couple of dresses from a local vintage shop for everyday wear, priced no more that £30 each. I struggle to find clothes I like in the shops now, they are all so cheaply made or poorly constructed. I’ve found older clothes to be better? Apart from showing my daughter, mum and oldest friend I just say THANK YOU and move the conversation on.

EnglishBreakfastTea1 · 05/05/2026 15:32

Also my 19yo rarely buys new clothes. I did buy her some British made leather trainers which she looks after and wears regularly, and her dad bought her a winter coat last year, but mostly she gets her nineties grunge style from Vinted, eBay, charity shops and vintage places. Markets, too. It’s definitely a thing now, and they love saying where they got it from. There’s not the stigma that I had at that age.

Lampzade · 05/05/2026 15:32

I always tell the truth . I bought a lovely pair of earrings from Shein which costs £2
A lady complimented me on the earrings and was surprised that I was honest about where I had purchased it and the price I paid

LoveYouPickle · 05/05/2026 15:46

Absolutely love telling people
where I get my stuff from! Onky if they ask obviously 😂

my dog gets complimented all the time on her harnesses and I love saying two quid from vinted 😃

I spent a whole evening last week telling people my jumpsuit only cost £3 from vinted. 😂
