Alternative wedding dress - where does one get one?

chewitt · 20/06/2008 20:01

My friend is getting married and wants a stylish dress that she can get married in. She doesn't want a typical wedding dress - nothing white/ cream or bridey. What shops should she go to in London? Come on you style gurus - help us out please!

What about just going to Selfridges and having a look round?

EffiePerine · 20/06/2008 20:01

or Liberty have some lovely dresses as well

Yabbadabbadooo · 20/06/2008 20:02

She needs to get herself a personal shopper appointment in somewhere nice (e.g. selfridges / Harvey Nicks).

LittleMissNorty · 20/06/2008 20:02

Mine cost £120 in Monsoon....strappy sage green number with beads..

She is very tall and slim. She has strawberry blonde hair and fair skin. She likes autumnal shades.

She could try having a trawl around on netaporter for gorgeous designer dresses which are still cheaper than a wedding dress.

Koh Samui in seven dials near covent garden, their dresses are amazing. Also if she's rich Harrods bridal dept have some amazing dresses that are not bridal at all

Ooh I love this one: www.net-a-porter.com/product/29938. Only £290 nicker. Can I get married again please??

For my wedding I toyed with the idea of wearing a vintage sort of 40s looking skirt suit (pencil skirt, nipped in waist) a-la the sort that brides used to wear just after the war. I think that's a cool alternative choice. However I ended up with a meringue, veil etc so what do I know!

missblythe · 20/06/2008 21:19

If I got married again, I would go here:

50s style dresses

Couldn't get the link to the 50s dresses to work...

granarybeck · 20/06/2008 21:24

monsoon, coast? depends how much she wants to spend i guess

missblythe · 20/06/2008 21:27

Fenwicks, on Bond St, is good one for frocks-has lots of smaller designers.

Am sure they must have personal shopper service (and they have a Carluccio's!)

missblythe · 20/06/2008 21:29

The Taj dress on this page would be lovely for a summer wedding

chewitt · 20/06/2008 21:29

Wow Miss B they're amazing! But, I think she is after something a bit sort of long and slinky ish though.

I'm not sure how much she wants to spend - are dresses in Harvey Nichs and liberty really really expensive? (like thousands rather than hundreds?) or do they have a range?

AnyFuleKno · 20/06/2008 21:30

try this www.candyanthony.com/album.htm

By the way do check out the 'sale' section on netaporter too.

Anyone else vicariously picking out wedding dresses?

missblythe · 20/06/2008 21:31

beautiful

stunning with her colouring

chewitt · 20/06/2008 21:33

Miss B we had crossing threads! Sorry!

Normal, designer non-bridal dresses in Harvey Nicks/Selfridges will be in the hundreds rather than thousands-like the ones on netaporter.

Obviously, with beading and other details that can run into thousands, but she should be able to get something fabulous for under a grand.

Browns on South Molton St is another fab place-loads of labels, and really helpful, knowledgeable, non-pushy staff.

chewitt · 20/06/2008 21:38

This is a real education for me - am definately going to have to point her in the direction of these websites.
