Striped trousers - nice or Andy Pandy?

Or do they just look like pyjamas?

I’ve bought the thin striped ones but am unsure.

There are different colours as well. Red green and brown with neutral background

it’s all about the styling. If you pair with an oversized t shirts it’s pjs. Fitted top, jewellery , jacket, large bag not pjs.

Exactly. Of the 2 I much prefer the bolder stripe.

I’ve been pondering this too - I think you need be very thin and long to make it work

No you don't. Honestly this response gets trotted out about so many things. As commented on in another current thread, it's tedious.

I prefer the bolder stripe. Really it’s about the attitude of the wearer. If you’re timidly trying to apologise for the fact you’ve bought some striped trousers, you’ll probably look a bit meh. If you wear them as if you mean it - other people will think you look cool, because that’s what you intend.

I bought a lovely pair of printed trousers a few years ago to wear on a camping trip in the summer with some friends.

It was a glorious hot day, about 1pm, thought it was perfect for them as they were a nice thin cotton.

My friend's 10 year old came up to me like "Why are you still in your pyjamas?"

Kids say it like it is. Haven't worn printed trousers since! 😅

Oh I really want a pair of striped trousers and am waiting for a delivery from next with some in. I think they look really good on some people but on me I suspect more clownish. I’m not sure why, maybe height? I’m hopefully the ones coming today will prove me wrong.

TheFairyCaravan · Yesterday 07:03

I ordered these from Next. I really wanted to like them but they’re ridiculously wide and have too much material at the hips so they’re going back. I’ve been looking at the ones with the thicker stripes in your OP @tobee but I’m at the point of giving up with Next trousers this year. For some reason the fit has been off in every pair I’ve ordered.

Pyjama trousers. Would assume that you hadn't bothered to get dressed and stayed in your pyjamas for the day. Saw someone wearing these recently and just was not sure if they were sleepwear or not.

henlake7 · Yesterday 12:39

I like them. comfy!
But then it wouldnt bother me if someone thought I was in pjs!

I can't help but agree with you here

Abandofangelsincivvies · Yesterday 13:04

I think they are ok if you are young and slim, a student maybe.

If you are older and plumper like me they look awful. A lot of the cheaper versions are see-through too. As an older woman I would only wear a sort of pinstripe version of these with heavier fabric or wear a stripey shirt dress but that can look like a nightie if you are not careful!

Monacomadness · Yesterday 13:06

I was in South of France recently wearing trousers like that. They were a summer linen mix with a thin blue stripe.

Never again. The woman who worked in the hotel gently said "are you leaving the building in your pyjamas?" I laughed and said no.

Then received awkward looks all day. And a few giggles while out shopping.

I was comfortable, yes. But I lost all my confidence wearing them.

It's a shame people (adults of various nationalities - not just French who were sniggering!) can be so mean but there we go!

Are they only on trend in the UK?

They left out "young".

Same. I’ve got three pairs. It’s pretty obvious they’re not pjs combined with jewellery and a face full of make up.

I don’t think they are on trend in the uk, I’m sorry.

roseswithoutthorns · Yesterday 13:44

I don't like the exceptionally wide trousers trend. As far as I'm concerned they don't flatter anyone.

Hiddeninthetrees · Yesterday 13:46

I really like them, they just look summery to me.

I struggle with any printed trousers. I love them on other people but can’t get over the pyjama thing myself.

Same, ive seen so many lovely ones in the shops, or on other people, but they all look and feel ridiculous on me. Or maybe everyone feels they are pyjama-y but they just ignore the feeling lol

Years ago before many of us were born, certain prison uniforms were striped!

Nah, stripes in any shape or form, any colour combo’ have too many connotations for PJs or prison for me.

I was a student at 54. While the stress and excitement of the first few weeks meant I dropped two dress sizes, I wouldn’t have described myself as young, or slim. I still wore exactly what I wanted to wear.

I hate them and sadly they remind me of concentration camp uniforms.

Circus tent. Don’t do it.

I did have some gorgeous navy and white horizontal narrow striped jersey ones with rope tie in my early 20s which I wore with a red tshirt. I might wear similar again, then again I might not.

neonjumper · Yesterday 14:05

I have the first ones from M&S and it’s definitely about the way you style them . I always feel so good when I wear them and the fall of the linen is definitely not pyjamary.
im 5’2 so not about height but definitely about styling !

Clothes shops are bloody heaving with striped trousers though, surely that means they are on trend
