Where do you buy slips to improve the drape of summer dresses?

Where do you buy your slips for dresses? I realise that is probably a dated thing to do, but I think it will improve the 'flow' of a lot of my summer dresses that are not lined.

I was wondering the same thing recently. I found a few on the M&S website, they're in the Shapewear section.

sesquipedalian · 28/04/2026 10:32

I always buy them in M and S. The cool comfort ones are comfortable to wear, and they come in different colours and lengths. ( They used to come in more lengths - now they come in 16, 23 and 29 inches.)

Thanks, I had been looking on there but I was hoping for some recommendations. I think I will try a few of theirs

M & S, they're so nice (the cool comfort ones) that I often end up wearing them as nighties in the heat! It really stops your dresses from clinging.

Comefromaway · 28/04/2026 10:43

M & S or John Lewis

Hogett · 28/04/2026 11:38

Ive just bought the M&S one after reading about them on here. They feel really nice and it does stop the dress sticking to me! So can recommend them, even if I do feel old using it!

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 28/04/2026 12:57

I've bought slips from www.sandras-online.co.uk, British made items. Also good for knickers, they stock a range very like Sloggis!

rainbowunicorn22 · 28/04/2026 13:13

try independent lingerie shops they may have nice ones if possible get cotton ones no clinging static etc

Rad1ogoogoo · 28/04/2026 13:14

I've always used M&S

Purplecatshopaholic · 28/04/2026 13:16

M&S still do the best I think. I also buy from John Lewis. Free People have nice ones too.

Jemimapuddleduk · 28/04/2026 13:25

I bought a cotton petticoat to go under summer maxi dresses on Amazon.

Gettingbysomehow · 28/04/2026 20:46

Amazon usually.

museumum · 28/04/2026 20:49

I tried one from m&s in winter to stop my dress sticking to my opaque tights but it gave me a mono-boob 😢 I couldn’t find one that draped nicely at the chest.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 28/04/2026 21:15

I prefer a petticoat , but I am rather, er, 'blessed' in the bosom department and full slips rarely fit properly. I get my petticoats from Matalan.

liquoriceallsortfamily · 29/04/2026 00:16

Matalan are cheaper alternative to John Lewis and m and s .

Edited

They sell waist slips as well.

I bought a waist slip in M&S's last sale which was very fitted at the waist and fastened with a zip, rather than being loose and elasticated. I don't know if they still are a current design, though.

I've been wearing M&S slips for decades, and agree that the cool comfort ones are good.

somburd · 29/04/2026 00:25

M and S.

NeedWineNow · 29/04/2026 08:26

I get mine from M&S.

What I would really like is one with an incorporated bra. I’ve got a couple of dresses that are lovely but quite clingy on the back so my bra clasp shows through. If anyone has got any ideas where to look that would be great.

deeahgwitch · 29/04/2026 08:29

M&S, Penneys (Primark in the UK), Dunnes Stores and my local independent lingerie shop ( Charnos brand slip ).

allthegoldicouldeat · 29/04/2026 08:38

I’ve bought some from Free People and they’re nice enough as outerwear too.
Might be showing my age to say that slips used to be known as underskirts.

What length did you buy? I can see they come in 16' 23' and 29'

But where is that measurement from? 16 inches from hip?

Most of my summer dresses are just above the knee

I second (third?) this.

I think I bought a two-pack which had a shorter one and a medium length one. Both full slips.

deeahgwitch · 29/04/2026 14:12

M&S also came in 19’ length. Not sure if they still do

It’s from the waist to the hem.

Edit: with most of them there’s a bit of flexibility as you can adjust the length of the straps, in a similar way to bra straps.
