Was salon laser hair removal worth it, and did it last? Please help me decide...

Hi, if you have has laser hair removal at a salon do you feel it was worth it? Would you do it again? Has it regrown?
I am very tempted as a clinic has opened very close to my house. I have been waxing every 2-3 months for 35 years but have heard sometimes the lasering can all regrow?
I'd be very grateful if anyone can share their experiences -thank you

I’ve not had laser but I have IPLd my legs and armpits with a Lumea. Worked brilliantly. My armpit hair (black) never came back and my legs get about 10 hairs a year which I zap and then forget about.

Fraughtmum · 27/04/2026 12:47

I had my legs and bikini line layered 25 years ago. Never came back

Flutterbees · 27/04/2026 12:49

I have a Phillips Lumea and it’s worked really well. Hair free legs, arm pits and bikini line.

curious79 · 27/04/2026 12:49

I have lasered my legs, bikini line, chin, and armpit

legs / bikini - total game changer. Haven’t needed to do anything in the 20 years since.

chin/ face - never really worked, comes back quite quickly, and gave me melasma on face

Armpits - reduce the amount, but still have to periodically shave

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 27/04/2026 12:51

thank you so much

Laser, medical grade, is well worth it. Choose your technician wisely though because not all places are equal.

Pyjamatimenow · 27/04/2026 12:52

The trouble with salons is a lot say they have lasers but they’re not laser machines they’re LEDs and this is not the same. I had all mine done 20 years ago at skin clinic and it’s never grown back but I had probably 20 treatments and they use proper hospital grade lasers

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 27/04/2026 12:53

I am most worried about the pre laser shaving because I have severe arthritis in my hands so am worried about cutting myself etc doing my bikini - I was hoping to everything removed from my labia and just leave some hair on vulva (sorry TMI!) - if anyone has any advice/warnings I'd be grateful

It is a specific laser clinic - this is all they do and they have very very good reviews - thank you

I had SHR not IPL about 6 years ago. Total game changer, hasn’t come back. It’s supposed to be more effective and less painful than the normal type

I had it done 15 years ago, im blonde so i have had some regrowth but it is very fine blonde hair not noticeable by anyone but me.
i did have a about 5 top ups sessions 4 years ago - hasnt made a difference to the few fair hair that persist
im glad i did it.

HaveYouHadYourBreak · 27/04/2026 13:01

Underarms - after 5 sessions was very much reduced but still grew. Frustratingly, I used to epilate my underarms with great results but now the hair is too fine so epilaping doesnt work.

My Philips lumea got rid of my belly hairs very quickly and they've not come back. Still working on other areas (like my underarms).

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 27/04/2026 13:02

Thanks, has anyone who had it on bikini area had issues with weird hair regrowth or 'loss of volume' both of which sound horrifying 😂

20yrs ago a friend moved from nursing to working in a laser hair removal clinic. I was her guinea pig but she soon left, so I only had 1 session on bikini line (only the outer part) and underarms. I'm fair with brown hair and after just 1 session, I now have about 4 underarm hairs and very few pubes where the laser was done. No 'loss of volume' or weird hair growth.

About 8yrs ago I bought a braun IPL. I used it on/off for about 2yrs! Underarms and bikini look exactly the same, but my arm hair (which wasn't that bad before) has reduced to a few hairs. Fine hairs are still there, but anything darker have nearly all gone.

In summary, I'd go back to a salon rather than faffing with the IPL at home.

bugalugs45 · 27/04/2026 13:04

I had laser In 2014
, not had to do anything with my legs or bikini line since , my armpit hair which was an every other day shaving job I now do approx once every 2/3 weeks but that’s only in last 2 years or so ,
I’m 47 so blaming perimenopause hormones for that .
I have very dark hair & my body hair was same . My armpit hair is super fine compared to what it was .
My ‘ moustache ‘ was similar and came back very fine and light compared to what it was .
It was worth every penny in my opinon .

theleafandnotthetree · 27/04/2026 13:07

Great success on the legs and bikini line. Face, I'm not altogether sure it didn't encourage growth but it certainly didn't help. Arms and armpits much less successful than the legs. It seemed the further up my body it went, the less well it worked!

minipie · 27/04/2026 13:11

I have fair hair, my leg hair was a mix of darker and lighter. Laser worked well on the darker hairs but not so well on the lighter hairs. Armpits perfect. Never did bikini area.

It did come back a bit when I came off the pill, be aware that hormonal changes can make it come back.

Definitely research what machine the salon has and shop around. Even among proper laser machines some are much more effective than others, especially for light hairs.

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 27/04/2026 13:15

This is extremely helpful - thank you so much everyone
I think it sounds very worth it for me. I have an ok income now and cam afford it and it will save ££ on all the waxing I do now

I had it done, but with ND Yag, (Candela max pro) which is the gold standard for hair removal.
Million % worth it

AprilComeSheWillWhenStreamsAreRipe · 27/04/2026 13:21

Sliced Bread on BBC Radio 4 last week, 23 April, covered this. I think they preferred laser over anything else.

I had laser hair removal on my legs about 25 years ago, when it was quite new and expensive, and my legs have been completely hairless ever since. I didn’t even finish the course as the salon closed down. I’d paid for a package and they refunded a generous proportion.

Before that I’d had lots of electrolysis on my face. That lasted until menopause when I assume lots of new hair decided to grow.

edit: I have pale skin and dark hair, which I understand is the type on which laser is most effective.

Motnight · 27/04/2026 13:21

I had laser hair removal on my face about 4 years. It completely got rid of my dark hairs, not my fair ones, which is what I've been told. My skin improved dramatically as I had loads of ingrowing hairs. I have spotted some hairs growing back - not yet enough for more treatment but I think by the end of the year there will be 😔. Having said that it was worth every penny.

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 27/04/2026 14:46

@AprilComeSheWillWhenStreamsAreRipe I will have a listen - thank you

My skin is olive and my hair light brown so I think I might struggle but I have arranged to have a patch test and will take it from there - she has great reviews
