I want to buy myself a ring

Oricolt · 24/04/2026 21:54

I can't afford it right now, but at some point over the next couple of years I want to buy myself a ring.

My marriage ended after 20 years. He never bought me a ring. That's okay, I don't want his poxy ring anyway. But I want to buy a ring from myself to myself, to wear every day.

Budget about £500? But if I find the perfect thing much cheaper that's fine. It's not about how much I spend.

I don't know what I want, but I'll know when I see it. I like stones. I don't like diamonds. I like flat and modern. Maybe a band with stones set in it? But not a rainbow of stones.

I think gold, not silver.

Maybe something with 4 stones, to represent me and my children?

Maybe it should just be about me?

I think I'm looking for something a bit cheesy tbh, to represent that I can do this by myself and I can rely on myself.

What would you buy yourself?

One of these kyanite band rings in silver for me.

Oh they're beautiful. Love.
Do you think they're robust enough for every day? That looks like the sort of ring I would wear often when I'm dressed up, but not to work.

Hmmm don’t know, check with the maker whether they’re happy with them for everyday wear maybe?

I will be having one in blue and silver, love them.

I have this ring and it is quite lovely. I've had it for years and it still looks perfect.

A huge big sparkly diamond ring!

Do you have antique jewellery places near you? They’re great for a browse and to get ideas for what you like

And I think second hand jewellery is VAT free, right?

DisplayPurposesOnly · 24/04/2026 23:19

I want something with London blue topaz and yellow gold, similar sort of budget.

PinkNeonSign · 24/04/2026 23:39

Ooh lovely idea to choose something for yourself, I also love the idea of the four stones.

I part-exchanged my wedding ring and added some of my own money to get a sapphire ring after looking at them for years. I still love looking at jewellery, especially rings, and follow some of the online auctioneers who show videos/photos of their stock. I saw a full band of emerald cut, pale pink sapphires which is living rent free in my head, probably loads of money but I’d love something similar. Happy ring shopping 😄

Yes, second hand is a good idea. Although I tend to prefer modern designs.

This designer does fabulous rings ( gold is very expensive ) but the words are meaningful I have her in and on ring and words of life . I also have the necklace ( I know not what you wanted )but the words again are powerful and have meaning . www.dianaporter.co.uk/products/silver-sibyl-pendant

Check out Alison Moore jewellery in Orkney or online.

I’d say but second hand, as new jewellery is expensive but loses its value the day you buy it.

Getting your own “I made it” ring is a lovely thing! Sapphires are the hardest after diamonds and come in different colours, not just blue. A lot of pretty stones like emerald are quite brittle. Look up the Moh scale of stones if you want some that are tough for every day wear and tear. If you want stones set into a band be aware they won’t sparkle as much as stones that are held out from the ring, but they are also more sturdy so it depends a bit on lifestyle.

I would look at Gina pattison jewellery on Facebook. She has some lovely designs and can design for you. She has a really special teal emerald that i would love to buy for myself x

Squirrelchops1 · Yesterday 17:17

I bought myself a ring but I had it designed and made so absolutely personal to me. Maybe see if any local jewellers nearby who do that.

OllysArmyRidesAgain · Yesterday 17:44

I'm married, but the 4 rings I wear on a daily basis I bought for myself, all from a local jeweller..
I have a perfectly good wedding and engagement ring, but they are not my style any more (very 90s).
DH doesn't really 'get' jewellery although I do have quite a few pairs of very nice earrings he has bought.

What a lovely idea! I really like to buy jewellery with a history, my engagement ring is from the 1930s (also means I don't need to worry about the diamonds being unethical etc). Old jewellery is often really unique and beautiful, so I'd go to an antique jewellers and pick out something with a story that felt right to me. I really like 1920s art deco type rings, I like the shapes and symmetry, so maybe that, but fairly plain stones like diamonds or maybe a splash of green from an emerald. https://www.antiqueringboutique.com/products/vintage-1930s-sapphire-and-diamond-ring-platinum maybe like this or this

If you don’t mind secondhand, you can get an absolute bargain from an auction house. I bought a three diamond gold ring for £250 from Bonhams online.

ChuffinCharlie · Yesterday 18:40

I would definitely buy secondhand, and you can have it altered if needed.

Paradoes · Yesterday 18:45

My local jewellers often advertise a 'mothering ring' with yours and your children's birthstones. I always think its a lovely idea.

Hope you get it sooner than you think for yourself and you get a chance to squirrel away the money to treat yourself.
