M&S knickers - what’s happened?

gillefc82 · 19/04/2026 00:51

I’m in my 40s and for most of my life I’ve bought my everyday wear knickers (thongs to be precise) from M&S. They’ve always washed well and lasted but I’ve found that the ones I’ve purchased during the last year or two have fallen off a cliff in terms of quality, e.g. holes appearing around the stitching after only a couple of washes.

Is it just me or are others having this issue? And can anyone recommend somewhere else where I can buy quality, comfortable cotton thongs that will last more than a few months?

I stopped shopping there a couple of years ago because the quality had gone. Nothing lasted. Was my first port of call for skinnies, bootcut, underwear and the summer chemise type nighties. I've got a couple of those that must be 15 years old and have lasted longer than ones I bought 3 years ago from them. They don't even do nice things for the home now, can buy more interesting things, better made and cheaper elsewhere.

I thought she meant customer, not job title? If the latter, I would also find that interesting!

Aww bugger... that'll teach me to post before having my coffee of a Sunday morning... 😆

I just loved the idea of someone whose job was sourcing something so iconic in the British psyche... like Head of Marmite or Minister for Fish and Chips... though clearly, alas, no longer...

Yes me too. Always bought M&S cotton high legs and recently the quality has been abysmal - they’ve literally turned to rags.

Yes me and my failsafe cotton Brazilians are nigh on impossible to find - I don’t want microfibres ones thanks! They’ve also narrowed the hip band so it cuts in. I now go to Sainsbury’s and they’re perfect!

Yep Sainsbury's knickers are my go to every day pants.

Ex M & S knicker buyer here too. You should try British Boxers. I'm a convert. Started buying about 3 years ago. Cotton mostly but last purchase was bamboo and they (bamboo) are so soft https://british-boxers.com/collections/high-leg-knickers

I was also a British Boxers fan and always bought from them. However the last order I had in January were shocking quality. Holes developed in the seams after a couple of washes.

Gowlett · 19/04/2026 13:20

Tesco knickers & tights are decent.

M&S, there’s just too much choice…

I don’t want all of the variety, colours, cuts, fabrics etc… Just good quality, please!

Olderbutt · 19/04/2026 13:33

Marks and Spencer everyday pants are now useless! I'm having exactly the same problem as you OP. Ive switched to Asda or Sainsbury's for everyday pairs. Cheaper too, so if they do let you down somehow you don't feel so bad about it!

Oh no. Hope it was a bad batch. Did you contact them?

I just used a ripped pair (clean!) to wipe down my kitchen counters.

I wrote to M and S and complained last year I go some high leg knickers and the gusset was dire literally far too narrow I was a geek and measured it with a ruler and then compared it with other brands. The pants also ripped round the waist band dreadful and some other brand weren’t any better to be honest John Lewis etc . I went to Sainsbury’s in the end but I won’t buy from m and s again.

I wrote to M&S about the narrow gussets. They never replied. Why on earth would they change the format? Our anatomies haven’t changed! At one time nearly every bought their underwear at M&S-they’ve lost a lot of custom due to these changes.

Thank goodness someone else has noticed this! It has now stopped me buying from them.

And me. I had to throw the last lot I bought away.

CrescentMoonLanding · 19/04/2026 16:31

Similar issues here. Also the sizing, in a size 10 but I have to get the 16!

DaysofHoney · 19/04/2026 16:32

Yep. Same for the flexi-fit range, quality has nose dived this last year.

CrescentMoonLanding · 19/04/2026 16:38

@AEIOYOU@AnnaQuayRules What's the sizing like with British Boxers high leg knickers?

TheIceBear · 19/04/2026 17:04

Is it just me or are M&S bras horrendous now ? They used to be the only ones I found comfy but I was in the other day and all the styles were awful. I tried all sorts of different styles and sister sizes to what I measure at and absolutely none of them seemed to fit correctly because most of them were bizarre shapes for one thing.

VividDeer · 19/04/2026 17:26

Yes! I have some from 10-15 years ago that are doing better than new ones. Hems fall off pulling them up

GoingForAGallop · 19/04/2026 17:42

I agree that the quality of M&S knickers has dramatically deteriorated in the past few years. The elastic starts shredding after only a few washes.

The quality of their clothes on the whole has dropped. Sadly, I’d say it’s on a par with Primark now and it’s rare to find a well made piece that will last years. I still have a few wonderful St Michael’s items from the old days!

Iaeve · 19/04/2026 17:53

M&S the stalwart of the British high Street, made successful by happy customers, now ripping them off left right & centre with absolute crap quality clothes and underwear. I despair at the quality every time I go in. It’s appalling and they don’t care, it’s all about the profit. Shame on you M&S!!!

Yellowpapersun · 19/04/2026 17:59

I used to buy M&S midis but they call them shorts now and they are not the same. The best alternatives are Asda multipack midis and some I bought on holiday in Ireland from Dunnes.

Mydoglovescheese · 19/04/2026 18:01

Same here, I’ve switched to Tesco after many, many years of only buying M&S

Their flexifit ones are very comfortable.

I'd love any recommendations for some with a slightly thicker and wider cotton gusset. I've found lots of places are doing ever shrinking gussets.

Triumph are good in the gusset area Smile

ERthree · 19/04/2026 19:54

It is not only their knickers that have gone downhill their nighties are terrible now, so short you daren't bend over and the split at the side is so high it is nearly at the waist.
