Too early to buy a mother of the bride dress?

Twodogsonthecouch · 17/04/2026 21:34

My daughter is getting married in June 2027. I know I have loads of time but when I was in town today and wandering through shops I was looking at the summer clothes and it occurred to me that it might be a good time to buy something.
the wedding is in a gorgeous old country house. Not very formal. No church. Hopefully wedding ceremony in the garden of the weather cooperates.

I was looking at these and thought they were pretty. What do you think?

It is incredibly difficult to avoid polyester at any price was one lesson I learned. Also phase eight love sending emails with special offers so there is a good chance any dress you want will be reduced.
I bought a dress a year in advance...
Then bought another one.

moose62 · 18/04/2026 09:20

I bought a dress I loved in the excitement of everything.....then bought another 7 months later when I went off the first one.
If you love the dress, buy it.....but then stop looking - completely! As there will always be another dress you love and tastes change!

ButMyGoshDontYouJustKnowIt · 18/04/2026 09:25

Buying now would mean the rught season in stock. Why not make an appointment with a John Lewis personal shopper in a store with a Phase Eight concession - then you can try everything and she'll give you some tips.

Normally the MOB should complement the colours of the bridesmaids. The first dress would be the safest. If you see something you love, it isn't too early to buy.

I've never heard of that.
OP - the coral dress is lovely. I always think that if you find something, buy it. You don't need to stop looking.

Twodogsonthecouch · 18/04/2026 09:39

Loads of good ideas. Thanks so much. Not wedded (excuse the pun!) to Phase Eight at all, I just saw these in town yesterday and wondered if one of them would be good.
As regards spending money on something that’s not really “me”, my style tends to run to comfortable and less dressy (hence Cos and Nobody’s Child) but this isn’t about me at all, it’s about my daughter and I really want her to have the day she wants. She’s fantastic and I know if I showed up in jeans and a blouse she’d be delighted but I think that would draw attention to me and that’s the last thing I want so if wearing something appropriate and pretty that isn’t 100% my style achieves that I have no problem with it.

IsoldeWagner · 18/04/2026 09:41

I think the green one is less flattering, but perhaps that would depend on your skin tone. Your daughter sounds lovely!
Both dresses appropriate and pretty, but my personal preference is for the coral one.

Floisme · 18/04/2026 08:32

they’re not my thing either really
I don't understand why you're thinking about spending around £200 on a dress that's not really your thing. You're not just going to be a random guest, you're Mother of the Bride and you deserve something that makes you feel good. I'm sure your daughter, who sounds lovely, would agree with that, and it doesn't sound like she'd expect you to wear a traditional MOB outfit.

Normally found in COS or Nobody’s Child! I
Same thought. Have you picked those dresses because they're "suitable for the MoB"? Or because you really like them?

I would have thought the Venn diagram intersection of people who really like Cos and Nobody's Child and people who really like those dresses would be sparsely populated.

Lomonald · 18/04/2026 09:45

I bought my dress from my eldest dds wedding 4 months before I am short, and needed alterations. I think over a year away is too much, id wait until your dd has her dress etc and then look for yours. My youngest is getting married in 27 ill look for my outfit after Christmas.

Souredgrapes · 18/04/2026 09:46

Wait for the end of season sale if the dress is for next year ? X

coolcahuna · 18/04/2026 09:47

I could only open the second link but I'd be a bit worried about being hot in these. June can be 20 degrees or scorchio. Could you find something sleeveless with a wrap or jacket and then you're covered.

Monolithique · 18/04/2026 09:50

The first one looks better, more structured.

I find buying dresses very difficult so if fitted me and looked nice I'd buy.

Twodogsonthecouch · 18/04/2026 09:50

I guess I think that suitable for MOB matters. There’s no way I would be seen dead in the very traditional MOB fitted, stiff, mid calf dress and fascinator with court shoes so that’s why I wonder if these would be a good compromise for a summer wedding in a low key environment.
Genuinely open to suggestions. The only caveat is as I keep saying, I want to compliment my daughter, not draw attention to myself by standing out in any way.

OP posts:
IsoldeWagner · 18/04/2026 09:51

Definitely no fascinator...and no court shoes, or high heels. What kind of budget?

Twodogsonthecouch · 18/04/2026 09:53

@Lomonald my daughter has her dress. It’s one of the bridal dresses on Rixo so not traditional but very elegant and really suits her low key style.
I’m not stressing about it at all yet, but don’t want to be stressing next year with nothing organised either

@IsoldeWagner no budget really. We’re very lucky. Both have had long careers in professional jobs and kids now reared with mortgage paid off so can push the boat out for the right thing but I’m not someone who normally buys designer clothes, it’s just not my style

Lomonald · 18/04/2026 09:56

I would wait till maybe after Christmas or maybe next jan/Feb and get something then. It is fun looking though

hahabahbag · 18/04/2026 09:57

I’d wait until the end of the summer season as there’s likely to be better deals, definitely try things on if you can. Don’t know where you are based but a trip to Clarks village or similar is probably worth while as a starting point, I got my mob dress in Hobbs and a lot more reasonable than high street branches. Bought shoes in the Clarks shop i could actually walk in too.

Don't force yourself into something, you need to find an outfit that you're comfortable with, in all senses of the word.

Twodogsonthecouch · 18/04/2026 10:08

I live that dress @IsoldeWagner. I’d be a bit worried about buttoned all down the front that the buttons would be gaping when I move around and that I’d be constantly pulling at it 🤣. That’s my biggest issue with fitted clothes, I hate wondering if they are still “in position”🥵.
(I think I must have what my other daughter would call “a touch of the tisms” 🤯😜)

Thanks for the advice 😀. There’s no colour scheme yet. I had a quick chat with my daughter yesterday about it. She said she hadn’t decided yet but if I saw something I liked to carry on and get it and she’d work with it. She’s very low key and is very much just wanting everyone to be relaxed and happy.
She bought her own dress online without going to any bridal shop. It’s a Rixo dress and really pretty and she loves it but it’s not at all dramatic so the last thing I want is to be more dressed up and “look at me!”

Well done for not raising a bridezilla! V refreshing.

Too true! I suspect you'd need to try it on. It's probably reasonable quality though, so I'd be surprised if it gapes.

Why not look at brands like Farm Rio or Rixo then? The dresses you've picked aren't a million miles from trad M o B.

If I'm ever MoB then what's suitable for M of B is a dress I fell in love with and makes me feel happy wearing it. It would definitely not be those dresses and my son would think, what on earth happened if I turned up in one of them.

You could try looking at all dresses on Liberty or MyTheresa and see if you find inspiration.

I personally strongly disagree with buying one off "occasion" dresses but there's plenty of brands like Farm Rio, Rixo, Alèmais, Stine Goya, Pink City Prints, which are extremely versatile. And many of these will be poplin, linen or silk.

This is just from a local shop and I've had my eye on it just because I like it.
