What cleared your teenagers acne?

dontdarepokethebear · 17/04/2026 20:07

DD’s odd spot has developed into acne. Large angry spots that take forever to clear. Mainly on her forehead, shoulders and back.

What worked for your teenager?

I need to convince DD to go see a doctor about it. The anti-blemish face wash and topical cream from Boots don’t seem to do anything.

Thanks

have you tried this?
if this doesn’t work I would get the antibiotics from your gp they worked miracles for me

Buttons97 · 17/04/2026 20:09

I suffered with acne in my early 20s - only thing that worked was benzoyl peroxide cream - you can buy it over the counter in pharmacies. It does make your skin more sensitive so I used at night only then wore SPF during the day.

AthenaWhite · 17/04/2026 20:26

Dermatica prescription. She was given adapalene which cleared it up but has had other things on her journey. They also do oral medication. It is worth it and it works.

Pineneedlesincarpet · 17/04/2026 20:26

Go to the doctor to get it nipped in the bud. And if a particular antibiotic doesn't work within a reasonable period of time ask for it to be changed. And get referred to a dermatologist if that doesn't work. I think you have to be on it a bit.

KerryPippin · 17/04/2026 20:27

I don't know if it was a coincidence but she cut back on dairy and her skin improved.

ScrummyDiva2 · 17/04/2026 20:28

My daughter tried everything. Only thing that worked in the end was the pill.

cheesepasties · 17/04/2026 20:28

My Dd tried anti biotics and they didn’t really work - the only thing that worked for her was going on the pill which sorted it out in a month or two.

TheGirlWithGlassFeet · 17/04/2026 20:29

Yasmin pill

namechangeabc123 · 17/04/2026 20:30

The pill, unfortunately. Or you could get her an Omnilux or a decent red light mask if you think she'd stick with using it. Light therapy does really help acne by about 85% iirc.

This.

dd developed quite severe acne on face and back. She tried all the washes, creams etc.

next step was GP for the pill but she was 14 and was really against the idea.

she saw on TikTok about dairy and bad skin, so I agreed to let her try for two weeks, not dreaming it would make any difference.

3 days in it was noticeably better. 3 weeks it’d gone from full on acne to the odd spot and a lot of residual redness. At a year the last of the scarring/inflammation had gone and her skin was clear.

as a side she also noticed she felt much better generally. The frequent “sick bugs” she used to get faded, and she stopped needing to constantly snack.

she’s been very committed to it ever since.

So I would give it a go. Two weeks won’t hurt, and if it doesn’t help nothing lost.

TheHouse · 17/04/2026 20:39

16 year old son is the same at the min but I work with teens and they often clear naturally after GCSEs. If not I’ll take him GP. He’s used quite a few products now. They help to a degree but nothing has totally cleared them up.

CowTown · 17/04/2026 20:45

We tried all of the lotions & potions, which didn’t really work. I bought a block of 3 sessions with a nutritionist, who set up a diet to follow. Cleared it up from the inside out.

tessiegirl · 17/04/2026 20:47

Lymecycline

thefloorislavayes · 17/04/2026 20:49

It’s unlikely to be just one thing. In our case, it was a combination of an antibiotic and a structured day/night regimen prescribed by a dermatologist.

MabelsBeats · 17/04/2026 20:50

Accutane! Accutane is what helped my teenager with acne.

Accutane! Accutane is what helped my teenager with acne.

Accutane is usually last resort though due to it’s possible side effects.

they will want to try antibiotics and contraceptive pill first.

MabelsBeats · 17/04/2026 21:18

I’m simply answering the OP’s question.

Contrarymary30 · 17/04/2026 21:19

She needs a long course of anti biotics . Failing that , see a dermatologist for roaccutane which will clear it .

Seagroves · 17/04/2026 21:32

My DD is currently on her third round of different antibiotics, which she takes in conjunction with a topical cream. They haven’t worked.

After this last lot, she’ll be referred to a dermatologist and is holding out for accutane. The GP couldn’t refer her till she tried the antibiotics, that’s the process.

She was offered the pill but chose not to go on it.

Melancholyflower · 17/04/2026 21:47

Roaccutane. After trying all otc and prescribed creams, as well as antibiotics.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 17/04/2026 21:51

My daughter tried the pill and antibiotics.

The only thing that eventually worked was when she finally (2 year wait!) saw a dermatologist.

She on accutane since December as well as having had steroids and a different antibiotic, and she's finally starting to see a difference in her skin.

EmilyintheUK · 17/04/2026 21:53

The Yasmin pill cured it completely for dd.
With my son long term antibiotics.

Idabelle · 17/04/2026 21:55

I was on the pill/ took antibiotics all through my teens for acne. Those stopped working eventually and I then took Roaccutane in my early twenties, when it got so bad I was barely leaving the house. The Roaccutane seemed to mostly clear it for good.

I still get occasional flare ups when stressed, benzoyl peroxide in the morning and adapalene in the evening for a week or so really helps.

If my child had acne, as opposed to normal spots, I would be straight to GP. It's a serious condition and needs proper treatment.
