What cleared your teenagers acne?

dontdarepokethebear · 17/04/2026 20:07

DD’s odd spot has developed into acne. Large angry spots that take forever to clear. Mainly on her forehead, shoulders and back.

What worked for your teenager?

I need to convince DD to go see a doctor about it. The anti-blemish face wash and topical cream from Boots don’t seem to do anything.

Thanks

Dianette contraceptive pill was an absolute miracle for me where nothing else worked. I’m not sure if it’s still prescribed but worth asking.

Rigevidon combined pill has worked for my daughter. She’s also been diagnosed with PCOS due to very painful periods so the pill has helped with that too.

Back in the day the effective treatments were prescribed Roaccutane cream. And what I personally had was antibiotics prescribed the doctor, worked wonders, obviously can’t stay on antibiotics forever, so went on Dianette contraception pill, skin was amazing on that but I put on weight with it. Then went on yasmin pill which again kept the acne at bay but less side effects.

Lymecycline

This. Developed severe acne in my late 40's, this is the only thing that cleared it up

47 skin worked very well for my DD, be careful though they sign you up for a subscription which is hard to cancel

I use Azelic acid cream 20% from the Dr. My daughter has antibiotics for hers.

You don't have to subscribe, I've been buying for DD for about a year and I just buy items as & when I need them. It is very expensive though.

It's definitely improved DD's skin but it's still bad (I suspect dairy is the issue).

Roaccutane.

Nothing else worked.

Yup this

I suffered from acne as a teenager, and was bullied for it too.

I went to the Doctors and was prescribed Dalacin T Topical Lotion. It's an antibiotic solution. It was fantastic, and cleared up my skin.

Don't use products like Clearasil...they are an astringent, and strip the skin of oils. The skin then produces even more oil to counteract the astringent, and you're stuck in a vicious circle.

Dianette contraceptive. Worked wonders.

10 years ago DS was prescribed antibiotics by a dermatologist. He was on them for a few months & hasn’t had a spot since.

WellConfusedandDazed · 23/04/2026 20:18

For my DD, going on the pill. She actually was prescribed it to try and regulate and relieve her horrible periods but her skin cleared up too.

BeaPerry · 23/04/2026 20:20

Accutane - nothing else touched it -

And if the antibiotics don't work (as some acne is antibiotic resistant and just doesn't respond) then get on to your doctor to try a different sort of antibiotic first before Roccutane. There are a few to try. Plus benzoyl peroxide. Sometimes its just trial and error and keeping on and on at the doctor. All else fails get referred to a derm.

My daughter hasn't reached teenage years yet but I had terrible acne as a teenager. Antibiotics worked for a while but ultimately it was the pill Dianette that did the trick. I don't think they like to prescribe that any more (and even at the time they didn't want me to be on it for long). I eventually switched to Yasmin which worked nearly as well.

This made my skin worse but the ordinary products worked really well for me

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 23/04/2026 21:15

Dianette.

It sounds very glib, but Dianette saved my life.

The feeling of being able to touch my face, without any spots was euphoric.
I just wish i had taken it sooner, and saved myself an awful lot of heartache.

Yes same for me. I had awful self esteem due to acne and Dianette was like a wonder pill- finally having clear skin gave me so much confidence.

I contacted the GP about my DD's acne today and he's prescribed Adapalene to try for 6-8 weeks. His text (🙄) says that if that doesn't work we could up the dose or prescribe antibiotics.
