Felipe is helped by his impeccable tailoring, and also by being very tall and lean with excellent posture.

I do find it odd that Grace Kelly could produce someone who looks so much like a potato, when she was so beautiful and both her daughters are very good-looking.

He's run to fat. He was good looking when young and athletic.

Albert was a very good looking and sporty young man. He's let himself go!

Thank you all, they will definitely get worn.
Good shout about getting the string checked.

I’ve also got her gold bangle. Haven’t taken it off since she left, which I’m very suprised about as I’m more for silver. But weirdly it works well with my silver bangle.

Albert was very athletic too when younger - he played tennis, sailed, competed in bobsleighing at the Winetr Olympics…

He lost his hair very young, too - he’s only 22 here, but definitely on the wispy side.

Albert can’t really help that he has not aged well, but it would help if his clothes fit better 😆

@locketrocket I often wear silver and gold bracelets together and find the effect very pleasing 😍

Serenster · 24/04/2026 15:11

Also, this is what he looked like when he and Charlene started dating, way back in 2001. He’s definitely gone to seed since then!

Albert must have had something about him, he wasn't short of female company over the years!

Maxima in a dress she first wore nearly 20 years ago. I absolutely love the dress- colour, wrap, design except for the bust/bodice which sits way to low and does nothing for her. It was the same the first time she wore it - pity as a gorgeous dress. I'm not a fan of that tiara - I prefer the bandeau/full ones rather than ones that have a peak in the middle.

Queen Maxima of the Netherlands wears a historic tiara, beloved by her daughter, at the Diplomatic Gala in Amsterdam

Queen Maxima's dress for the white tie gala may have been almost two decades old, but her dazzling tiara has a history stretching back centuries

Maxima looks stunning, although I do agree about the fit of the bodice. The colour is gorgeous, and the necklace 😍!

Not sure he was particularly good-looking even at that point tbh!

Maxima looks great in the pink gown. And she's edging into Princess Anne levels of thrift if it's 20 years old!

Yes, the attraction was definitely due to something else.

20 years you say? Not bad.
I suspect Anne will be a world beater in these stakes, though!

RomainingCalm · 24/04/2026 16:48

I'm not so keen on Max's pink gown (either first or second time round) - imo it looks 'of its time'.

And yes, maybe Albert hasn't aged particularly well (more noticable over the last couple of years) but that's no excuse for the dreadful fit of most of his clothes - even for the very formal events.

Sidebeforeself · 24/04/2026 17:01

Im not saying this to be the thread police but we wouldnt post comments on here about a female RF member “letting themselves go” etc so why do we do it for men? Genuine question - I think its interesting

SqueakyDinosaur · 24/04/2026 17:02

I think if you are a public figure, shambling around as badly dressed as Albert is extremely disrespectful to your audience. He's the Boris Johnson of royals.

Pallisers · 24/04/2026 18:18

I can't see how Albert's clothes are in any way disrespectful to his audience. His clothes often have a poor fit considering how much he probably pays for them and could use some better tailoring but he is always appropriately dressed for the occasion.

It’s a good (and reasonable question) question. I should say in this context when I said that Albert has “gone to seed” I meant he has put on weight as he has aged. I push back strongly elsewhere on MN when posters criticise women in the public for ageing, or worse, regard it as some kind of moral failing - I certainly don’t hold his getting older, or his losing his hair against Albert (or any other man in the public eye)! But it’s true I wouldn’t remark negatively about a women in the public eye for gaining weight as they age, so I probably shouldn’t have made a derogative comment about Albert either.

justasking111 · 24/04/2026 21:24

Other royals have lost their hair, but taken care with their tailoring. William looks fine still, his tailoring has improved. Charles looks good most of the time.

Modern royals tend to take care of themselves much better than their ancestors.

gingercat02 · 25/04/2026 09:13

I agree Albert looks scruffy or a bit unkempt at times. It's not just his weight. Ranier gained weight as he got older but always looked quite swave (?) and well presented.
Fred is similar he always looks like he didn't leave enough time to dress.

Albert is visiting Pompeii here, about a year ago. He looks ok, the suit fits, he presents well. The chinos are good, maybe that zip top is a bit snug.
Maybe he's one of those men who've never been interested in clothes.

However, here he is going to the Commonwealth Day service, and the tailoring is the problem. His hair is neat, he always seems friendly and approachable, but it's as if he doesn't really consider the fit.
I suspect he's harder to dress than Felipe.

I thought he must have a sense of humour to be photographed in this ensemble a few Christmases ago!
