Is it unreasonable to ask Vinted or Ebay sellers for clothing measurements?

If I go to a shop I can try something on to see if it fits. If I buy something from a shop online I can buy a size up or down to find out what fits best and can return what doesn't fit. But if I buy something from Vinted or Ebay I want to know the measurements, underarm to underarm and neck to waist/hem. It's all well and good saying it's a 12 or 14 or 16 or a Medium or Large, but that doesn't really mean anything. So if I am interested in buying something I always message the seller asking for the measurements. So few sellers respond. I know this isn't AIBU but am I? Clothes sizes vary so much and I just want to know if something is likely to fit before I buy, especially when most don't accept returns.

I always list any measurements so there’s a chance for buyers to double-check for themselves.
I also say to get in touch if more details are needed, so I think it’s perfectly reasonable to ask, even if the item is only a few pounds, so you know for sure.

Contrarymary30 · 10/04/2026 01:58

I always ask for measurements, in fact it annoys me when sellers don't put it in the description. I've scrolled past things I'd have liked to buy when there are no measurements or proper description on occasion. You're NBU.

I’ve asked for measurements on eBay and been told that the seller doesn’t own a tape measure.

Manicmondayss · 10/04/2026 02:16

I usually ignore questions like this unless I’m selling for high value. If it’s a couple of quid I can’t be arsed and would rather let the item stay on sale longer.

amylou8 · 10/04/2026 02:23

I list with basic measurements. You can't buy a sweatshirt without the chest measument or trousers without the inside leg. My general rule though, and I'm a full time resale business, is that I don't provide extra information, photos/measurements etc, that require my time, because it so rarely leads to a sale.

Yes, fussy/picky people usually ask questions then never buy or respond

Floisme · 10/04/2026 06:41

Not unreasonable at all, although I started off asking for measurements but now I just scroll past if the seller doesn’t state them in their post.

When sizing is so erratic, and when you’re buying with little or no chance to return, then measurements are pretty basic information. If a seller won’t provide them unless asked then, as far as I’m concerned, that’s not a good sign and I’d rather look elsewhere.

autumn1610 · 10/04/2026 06:55

If it was a few pounds I wouldn’t as I genuinely don’t care if it sells or not. More expensive items I would do measurements if asked but not repeated queries about the item… for example I did measurements and the they wanted to see a photo of it on so they could see how it sat and how long it fell. Nope you lost me there

LayaM · 10/04/2026 06:57

I wouldn't bother for anything under a tenner, possibly 20 if I'm busy, it's not worth the time.

Same.

Freysimo · 10/04/2026 07:04

How long does it take to measure something? It's annoying how many sellers don't reply to a request for lengths of trousers/skirts/dresses. I'm short so it matters. I don't want to have to pay for shortening stuff on a cheap item.

Floisme · 10/04/2026 07:09

When people are handing over money they won’t get back for something they haven’t tried on or even seen then I think it’s a perfectly reasonable request. It’s your choice not to do it and it’s my choice not to buy from you if you don’t.

LaurieFairyCake · 10/04/2026 07:18

I also wouldn’t bother, but I’m selling standard shops clothing not niche. If you don’t know your size in M and S then I’m not going to dig out a top I’m selling for £8 and try to find a tape measure

Yes, have frequently received the same response on Vinted.

history505 · 10/04/2026 07:29

If it’s a dress I put the length. I can’t be bothered putting measurements for t-shirts, sweatshirts etc but I’m happy to measure it if people ask. I sell bog-standard high street brands for a few quid, I want to just list things quickly.

rookiemere · 10/04/2026 07:36

I have asked and received responses but this was for ski bottoms costing around £25.
I have also asked to see the label before to check the code for cheaper items and have had an answer.

Codyrhodesisaheel · 10/04/2026 07:38

But what if those measurements arent accurate? Not just measuring mistakes but also natural stretch of the fabric? Particularly for jersey knit fabrics

TalulahJP · 10/04/2026 07:43

anyone with half a brain should put measurements on their listing.

a size large can be anything from a 36 inch chest (asian sizing) to a 46 inch chest (larger lady shop). Thats ten inches of difference!

even if you have the brand you still dont know. i bought two vest tops in asda. same size. one black one white. one is two inches longer than the other. it’s mental. how does that even happen!!

InconvenientlyMaterial · 10/04/2026 07:47

I always list with measurements and often ask for measurements (but not for cheap stuff). I don't understand how people can get by without knowing their measurements when sizing is so erratic! I am a difficult shape though so perhaps that's the issue.

TheBirdintheCave · 10/04/2026 07:51

I only post the measurements if it’s a non high street brand item. For H&M and Next etc the buyer can go to their website and look at their sizing charts surely? At least, that’s what I do.

I do provide measurements if someone asks me specifically for then though.

PrimaniTu · 10/04/2026 08:06

I think Vinted/Ebay etc should insist on measurements. I’m short so I can’t tell if those trousers are way too long. Saying a skirt comes just below my knees means nothing to me. Are you 5” or 5” 11?

Re: price even stuff that’s cheap by the time you pay postage and the “insurance” it will amount to just under a tenner. So not that cheap all in all to buy something that may/may not fit.

They should also insist on a photo of the size label. I hate it when people say it’ll fit from an 8- 12 depending if you want it tight or oversized. Or say it’s Medium but will have an L label.

And don’t get me started on people who sell American brand clothing and get the sizing wrong.

Then you get the sellers who post 1 picture of a badly blurred item priced £40.

And breathe Grin these are my bugbears and I can’t be bothered buying stuff from it anymore. I just use it to sell stuff.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 10/04/2026 08:07

Not unreasonable. I cba posting measurements but will measure for buyers.

I put waist size for jeans but not inside keg as one buyer asked for recently.

Followthesunshine · 10/04/2026 08:14

In my experience people who ask these questions about items from high street shops never buy. I will give a skirt length if someone asks but otherwise its a waste of time for any item under £15 and I won't respond. Someone else will always buy the item.

Caterpillargirl23 · 10/04/2026 08:19

I generally don't buy unless there are measurements either.

Rather than writing 'I am 5ft 4, a size 8 and the dress falls just above my knee and is a generous fit' just show the length from top to bottom and across the bust and waist and I can work out where it will finish on my legs and if the fit is generous. It can't take much more time.
Most shops are as bad with this, but yes at least you can return the clothes.
