Is it unreasonable to ask Vinted or Ebay sellers for clothing measurements?

If I go to a shop I can try something on to see if it fits. If I buy something from a shop online I can buy a size up or down to find out what fits best and can return what doesn't fit. But if I buy something from Vinted or Ebay I want to know the measurements, underarm to underarm and neck to waist/hem. It's all well and good saying it's a 12 or 14 or 16 or a Medium or Large, but that doesn't really mean anything. So if I am interested in buying something I always message the seller asking for the measurements. So few sellers respond. I know this isn't AIBU but am I? Clothes sizes vary so much and I just want to know if something is likely to fit before I buy, especially when most don't accept returns.

I do see quite a few listings on eBay now where the photos include ones with tape measures in the pictures. It's an easy way to do it, if not foolproof.
I've been shopping in eBay and occasionally Vinted for many many years now and I don't really see mega bargains for the things I want anymore, so I need to be sure as sure as I can.

twilightcafe · 10/04/2026 08:27

I always provide measurements. A quick check with a tape measure is not time consuming.

SmallTreeDeepRoots · 10/04/2026 08:29

I don’t think you’re unreasonable to ask, but I probably would bother replying unless it was an expensive item. It’s a lot of bother for a few quid and rarely leads to a sale. IME questions about the item tend to be people looking for a reason not to purchase. Or they send 50 enquiries and by the time I reply they have either bought elsewhere or gone off the idea. I have a resale business (not clothing) and it’s the same - about 2-3% of enquiries lead to a sale.

I don’t bother if they ask unless it’s a high value either, its a size 10 from M&S, if you’re are usually a size 10, then it will fit. Plus if you are even half a centimetre out they will use it as a reason to return it.

Tinseltrauma · 10/04/2026 08:33

I will provide them if the potential buyer requests but I’m not going to measure every item I post. If it’s a dress I will usually give a rough length - where it sits on me and my height. Often the potential buyers who ask for loads of detail then don’t buy or even come back to say thanks but no thanks so I’m not going to put myself out for a couple of quid. And the beauty of Vinted as a seller is how quick it is to upload items.

I scroll past items with no measurements even if I really liked the item . It takes a minute to measure bust hips and length !

MagneticSquirrel · 10/04/2026 08:47

YANB. There are many sellers on Vinted selling “maxi” dresses and skirts that are actually midi length when ask for measurement - so annoying!

For dresses and skirts I always give length & waist measurements and say in my listing that I am happy to supply any measurements for other items because retailer sizing does vary over time and I won’t take refunds. I’m only selling low value stuff < £10 usually but all adds up and declutters over time!

awfulapril · 10/04/2026 08:48

I never reply.
its £5

In my experience people who ask these questions about items from high street shops never buy. I will give a skirt length if someone asks but otherwise its a waste of time for any item under £15 and I won't respond. Someone else will always buy the item.

This. It's marks size 12.

awfulapril · 10/04/2026 08:49

Also agree - why do you all have tape measures??

Plus postage and insurance means it costs £10 to the buyer. You may only receive £5 but the seller has shelled out around a tenner for an item that may or not fit.

Exactly this, it takes a couple of minutes if that to measure and sellers can't be arsed? I only enquire if I intend buying and 9/10 there's no response. Just bloody rude imo.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 10/04/2026 09:01

YANBU.
I always list measurements and include a photo of the size label.

It does my head in when sellers don't even include a size label photo. Particularly on Vinted, where even if you click the correct size box you still get 5 different sizes pop up.

Mine came out of a Christmas cracker!

UniquePinkSwan · 10/04/2026 09:04

I sell on EBay and always include measurements. It’s expected. On Vinted, I don’t even bother asking as you get an earful.

lalaloopyhead · 10/04/2026 09:08

Interesting, I never list measurements, but then most of my items are pretty standard and I put on for a low price to sell quick so it seems a lot of effort for say a pair of size 12 jeans from Tu for £3 or £4 - and I suppose when I look for items to buy I am looking for something specific or I go with brands I know my size.

If someone asked for measurements I would provide them though.

Shinyandnew1 · 10/04/2026 09:16

I always ask for measurements. Mostly people are great and will give them but have had quite a few say they don’t have a tape measure. Others have said, ‘it’s a 16, hun, like I said.’ or ‘it’s like £5, why don’t you just see if it fits!!?’

I’ve had some that have taken a photo of the tape measure on the top-not stretched out properly so it’s not measuring anything or not starting from zero and the photo is too far away to see the numbers!!

DatWan · 10/04/2026 09:19

You’re definitely not unreasonable to ask, but often I can’t be arsed to measure something I’m selling for a fiver and that I’ve described clearly - e.g. regular length, size 12, from M&S. Buyers could often find this out from a quick google themselves.

So ask away, but don’t always expect an answer…

JellybellyM00 · 10/04/2026 09:31

I never respond to these requests. I don't mind because it never takes long to sell an item anyway. Sorry 💐

awfulapril · 10/04/2026 08:49

🤣 I knit and sew - which is why I have multiple tape measures at home.

A tape measure is also essential at car boot sales when you can't try clothes on.

JMSA · 10/04/2026 09:37

I don’t tend to ask for any measurements, but do often ask if it’s going to fit me. Like, I’m 5’4”, are the jeans likely to be too long? That kind of thing.

NedsAtomicWheelieBin · 10/04/2026 09:46

Manicmondayss · 10/04/2026 02:32

Yes, fussy/picky people usually ask questions then never buy or respond

Maybe it's not that they are fussy or picky, it's that now they have the measurements they know it won't fit?

I don’t list measurements but do list the brand and size so the buyer can go check on the website.

Yes but for my time as the seller it’s only worth £5.

I don’t list measurements. I take pictures of everything and then upload all together. If I had to do measurements I’d have to measure, write down measurements for each thing, then use that to list.

I buy a lot on Vinted and have never asked for measurements. I look for size and brand and I know whether I will fit that size in that brand. Yes I’ve had a few things not fit brilliantly, but rarely spend more than £5-£10 on anything. So I either resell or donate to charity shop.

AmIReallyTheGrownup · 10/04/2026 09:55

I list with chest size and inside leg length but nothing else.

My experience has been that people who need measurements tend to be phenomenal time wasters who don’t purchase. They are welcome to purchase from the high street if they are particularly concerned about fit.
