Mum tum

Justnetballandcoffee · 04/04/2026 15:11

I have two DC, abed 7 and 4 and I have a proper mum tum, overhanging belly. I'm about a size 10, so not big overall, but bigger than I was before I had kids, which is fine.

I need to make more effort to exercise and eat well but even then I don't know if there any way to address this belly without surgery. I don't see other mum's tums so I don't know how bad it is but it's more than I imagine would shrink back down.

Any tips (in addition to eating a better diet)?

Thanks in advance

Iv have 2 children by csection, over the last 2 years i have dropped from 84kg to 60kg through diet and excerise (im 5'7) my mum tum has improved slightly but not to the point im happy with. I weight train 3-4 times per week and walk 10k steps per day, eat mainly wholefoods and do everything i should but i cant do anything with the skin which overhangs so i have booked myself in for a tummy tuck in October.

bunnyvsmonkey · 04/04/2026 15:47

Sloggi control knickers. I'm also a size 10 and my dc2 really did stretch it out. But with those knickers on it all looks good and they're not like huge control pants.

SausageOfAmbiguity · 04/04/2026 15:54

Is it actual diastasis recti? Google for how to check it yourself if you haven't before.
If it is there are exercises you can do. They do work best when you're still postpartum, but you can still improve it years later if you want to put the work in.

This is the thing. I definitely need to improve my diet but the overhang will still be there. I have only just started thinking I'd consider surgery but I'm not at that point yet! Good luck

I love the sloggi control knickers! They've become a must have for me for work and I always way control pants now if I'm wearing a dress or something.

I'm looking for a way to actually improve my body too now.

I was the same, my youngest is now 13 so iv had a long time to consider it, have a look at whether you potentially have a pelvic tilt which you can rectify as this will accentuate the lower abdomen

previouslyknownas · 04/04/2026 16:02

If you want to get a flat stomach get rid of the overhang and repair the stomach muscle then a tummy tuck is the only thing that’s going to work

even when you loose weight you will still have an overhang / loose muscles

you would be looking at around 10k in the uk
and around 3-4K in Turkey / Lithuania for a tummy tuck could be more if you needed a FDL

Ive had surgery both in the uk and abroad
and found no difference apart from the prices

Farmwifefarmlife · 04/04/2026 20:29

No advice but 3 DC later I have a definite mum tum! I’m also a size 10, it’s the only thing that really gets to me, I’m dieting a little and exercising atm!

bridgetreilly · 04/04/2026 20:34

Learn to love it.

Sorry to jump on @Justnetballandcoffeeand @bunnyvsmonkey but can you tell me what sloggis you recommend? So many different types

Justnetballandcoffee · 05/04/2026 15:19

Thank you I will look into this

you can't see it in clothes and maybe the appearance will lessen or get worse if I lose a few lbs

Improve your posture and core strength.

Justnetballandcoffee · 05/04/2026 15:25

Yes I realise I can't fully get rid of it and surgery is probably the only fix but I wonder if there is a way to improve it eg collagen and microneedling. At this stage I'm not thinking about surgery but it's helpful to have an idea of cost.

I probably still have some ab separation but haven't given up on that. It's the loose skin more so but I won't know unless I give it a really good go and it doesn't work.

It will go when you’re the weight you were before kids, with core work. I had this for years but it was only with proper training and weight loss. I think it’s the first place weight goes when you’re over what you were pre kids

That would be great as I don't think I have a tonne to lose but it's 7 years since my first, my youngest is nearly 5, and I can't imagine it shrinking, but want to give it a go!

Do some planks. No need for special equipment, and takes very little time.

I'll give it a go! I've started doing more core exercises but need to get back into the planks and may see if I can he referred to the physio again as I'm not convinced my diastasis recti has healed but it's the loose skin I don't know what to do with. Strengthening the abs may help but I'm not sure how much!

It might not help the specific problem but it will help you feel better about your body.

That's probably true and diet and exercise will definitely help overall!

I've had a look at my belly and I am pretty certain I have diastasis recti above my belly button (at least). I always had flat upper abs even when I didn't like my lower belly but there's definitely still some separation as there's a bulge (but I don't think hernia).

I'm now worried I'll make it worse by doing some of the abs exercises I do so going back to some more basic diastasis healing moves...

Hopefully just to focus on that area would only need a few minutes a day.
Just seems the easiest place to start before getting into treatments?
But I can't recommend anything special in way of exercises!
