Chunky knit, ethical brand cardie for 18yr old - any ideas???

I'd like to get my daughter a nice chunky knit cardie for her birthday. She'll be 18 and is not very interested in fashion. She likes quite plain and simple clothes, but I think she'll love something soft, cosy and probably white that she could keep for a good few years. Budget up to £100/£150.
Could anyone suggest a brand or two to look at? I was looking at Anthropologie, but not sure if that is middle aged! As I say, she's not that into fashion but I think would appreciate something her friends would approve of, if that makes sense!
We'll probably look together, but a steer would be good. I think she'd prefer an ethical brand.

I would suggest finding someone local who
could make one to size exactly how she wants it. Personal, supporting local business and therefore ethical and nobody else will have one quite the same

That's a lovely idea - very special!

It's not white, but this colour is very wearable and Finisterre is certified B Corp.

Thanks everyone. I love Cara and the Sky!

Might be worth a look in Oliver Bonas?

I was also going to suggest Community Clothing. British-made and all natural materials. I have bought and been given a couple of things and the quality is great. I would love some of their knitwear one day.

I also have a jumper from Palava which I love. They have some fun patterns and some which are simpler in colour but have different and lovely knits. Also natural materials.

Not an ethical brand

Not an ethical brand

Haha - what's their excuse for their prices then?!

WonderingWanda · 31/03/2026 07:23

What about Passenger? Quite popular with her age group.

Misshollys · 31/03/2026 07:25

As a knitter, I feel white might be hard to keep for many years, what about a pastel colour?

Don't get Hope Macauley. There's a long thread about their disappointing chunky cardigans. The wool they use doesn't stand up to much wear.
Great for Instagram but appear to be useless in real life.

Holdinguphalfthesky · 31/03/2026 07:26

There’s a whole thread about Hope Macauley, the moral of the story being don’t buy their cardis if you want to actually wear them!

Finisterre is great, their knitwear lasts and lasts.

Ireland's Eye Knitwear , lovely shaping and a nice range of colours:)

If you are properly paying them for their time, I imagine this would be (significantly) over budget.

HUGE words of warning for Hope Macaulay: her cardigans are made from very delicate roving yarn which looks fabulous at first but after any wearing at all it pills, and then it felts, and it looks really tatty. There’s a thread in S&B at the moment and the OP is trying to get her money back: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/styleandbeauty/5473548-hope-macauley-cardigan. They are very cool indeed but please don’t break your budget for one.

I’m afraid so. Assuming that the cardigan is made from wool rather than acrylic the raw materials alone will be £100+.

Geneticsbunny · 31/03/2026 08:55

I was coming on to say the same thing. The wool for an adult sized jumper would cost at least £90 unless you get something synthetic or a mix.

But I expect it will cost more than £100 - the yarn plus someone's time!

Etsy has lots of handmade cardigans, direct from the knitter.
