Going grey - how to do no more dye? Temp ? Toning?

As the title says, I’m going grey after dyeing for the best part of forty years. I started going grey very young, precocious puberty and I’ve been dyeing ever since.
i stopped for a while in lockdown and that was my original cue to stop altogether but I got halfway there and vanity gave in.
i have now decided I don’t have money or time to go through expensive cuts and dyes, the dye affects my hair condition and I actually want to see what happens when it comes through completely.
i just don’t know how to deal with this stage.
I’ve had it cut much shorter and hairdressers says it’s much easier to grow out because I’m curly but I still don’t like this demarcation….

what do people do, what have you done? Is it just a case of grin and bear it?
can I tone it?

Plantur 39 brown shampoo and conditioner could well be your new best friend… it definitely is mine! I’ve gone from blonde, salt and pepper and brown to a lovely caramel colour. Takes about 10 washes to really see a difference but now I just do it once a week while the blonde grows out as I refuse to get it cut shorter!

Ooh o k thanks I will try this too

I think you dont have a.major difference in the two colours. But to counter the inevitable brassiness of the leftover blonde and keep grey looking fresh, I'd go with a purple shampoo - Clairol Shimmer Lights is good. I've been grown out for around 3yrs now, hair is just longer than shoulder length - my hair is a mix of light brown and pure white, some very obvious white streaks! I love it, would never go back to dye and want to grow it longer for the summer. I think once your hair gets past the ears, it looks more intentional. I was growing out blonde and it looked quite nice once it got towards the ends.

Thanks so much, I can’t wait to get past this stage!

How about investing in a decent wig? You could wear it for work/going out and grow out your roots underneath. I'm in the same boat as you and thinking about this route.

I've decided to grow mine out recently and stumbled across this guy on YouTube, he's a genius in grey blending but he is also very honest on how sometimes just growing it out can be the best for your hair - his videos are definitely worth a watch https://youtube.com/@ramijabali-hairsalon?si=RmGhmSBordXJBW8w

I don't think my link has worked but if you type Rami Jabali Hair in you will find him

I grew mine out about 3 years ago now , best thing I ever did.

Was the second attempt, first time I was just early 50's and I was too young, it aged me . Late 50's and my face had caught up and with a new hair cut, I started to look more brighter

I went short. An undercut pixie , because I still had a lot of dark hair at the back and the undercutting allowed some length and took away the badger look

With keeping the hair short, took about a year and now Im a silver white .

I let my roots grow out and then got a pixie cut just to get rid of the colour. I let the pixie cut grow out.

I’m so tempted to do this, I really don’t sit short hair at all though, my body shape doesn’t lend itself!

Mid brown hair here with probably 40% grey. Was previously doing perm colour but the demarcation line was so bright and obvious; I’d have to redo it every 6 weeks. Very time consuming and expensive.

Switched to a semi perm a couple of years ago and started increasing the time between dyes to every 3-4 months. Have now stopped entirely because the greys are totally blended through. It looks so much better.

Absolutely refuse to spend any more money on dying my hair, and generally being on that beauty industry merry-go-round.

It was certainly a drastic choice for me, but I used hairbands and strategically placed clips as it grew out to avoid looking like Little Orphan Annie (I have curly hair). I trimmed the back as it all grew so it began to look like a bob.

What about a nice silver/grey dye? (And make sure to use the right shampoo for grey hair).
