Irritated to realise dress I'd ordered is backless- suggestions on how to fix?

I'm on a tight budget right now and managed to get a lot of stuff I like in the Warehouse sales. However, they seem annoyingly keen on making things backless/cutout etc when they really don't need to be. I usually check properly but when I ordered this dress I was tired & forgot.
I really like it- how could it be fixed? I have eczema there & don't really want to expose my back at the moment. Short of getting it altered, that is. I do sew (only by hand) so I might possibly be able to alter it myself- if there's a way to do that...

Of course I can cover it up with a wrap etc but ideally I'd like to change it.

Link to dress, suggestions appreciated!

I would wear a slip under a dress like that anyway. If you got one of the lacey tops you could just wear a half slip

This is more the kind of thing I’m thinking , rather than any sewing or adding in weird panels. Just make it your actual underwear so you’re not adding extra bulk or things that can go wrong.
Hiding my back has been my life’s work so I’m well versed in it!
edite to add, whilst images are being reviewed: racer back lace bra, I’ve put in both jade and emerald in the searches

I cut a camisole top in half and stitched it into the seams to cover a backless dress I bought. worked a treat.

LIZS · 29/03/2026 16:25

It is open back fastening rather than backless. Maybe a small section of dark green chiffon/lace or flesh colour panel(or cami vest top) under the dress.

Can you undo the bow and zig zag it across the opening and hand sew in place, to make a feature of the back? You would have to make sure it fits over your head though before sewing. Or use the bow straps to do vertical straps or X shape? Just a few suggestions. Good luck

Wear it the other way around. Trinny Woodall often does that.

This! I have one a similar cut that works both ways round!

I'd buy some mesh or lace fabric and sew it onto the underside of the dress. Contrasting or metallic fabric works really well if you want something solid.

Soverymuchfruit · 30/03/2026 14:50

Just wear a nice, relatively high necked vest underneath.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 30/03/2026 14:55

Under that dress, I'd try a full slip in nude colour. The dress might even hang better on you with the slip under it as well.

mochimoons · 31/03/2026 15:53

I'd put a patch of lace in if it's not too irritating for your skin

VimtoDemon · 01/04/2026 10:33

How about a skin tone mesh top under like this

Or a bolero for underneath as this looks like it may cover enough back?

If on a budget there are cheaper versions of Shein etc and probably ebay too, or you can recycle an old pair of tights to do it too like this

All mesh so still cool to wear 😊
