Irritated to realise dress I'd ordered is backless- suggestions on how to fix?

I'm on a tight budget right now and managed to get a lot of stuff I like in the Warehouse sales. However, they seem annoyingly keen on making things backless/cutout etc when they really don't need to be. I usually check properly but when I ordered this dress I was tired & forgot.
I really like it- how could it be fixed? I have eczema there & don't really want to expose my back at the moment. Short of getting it altered, that is. I do sew (only by hand) so I might possibly be able to alter it myself- if there's a way to do that...

Of course I can cover it up with a wrap etc but ideally I'd like to change it.

Link to dress, suggestions appreciated!

You could try this, you need to use the word high neck and modesty in the search as lots of women buy clothes but then put "modesty" under garments on to cover the flesh revealed by the clothes.

This one is black and sparkly and you can see the high neck back on the white one in the photos.

The dress you've linked to isn't backless? If you don't like the tie at the back just return it.

Bargain dress at £10.80 though!

Yeah, and I really like it. I think I'll take the bralette suggestion and maybe sew a panelm

it’s not backless!

Sell it on - on Vinted and buy another one with no cut out at the back.

Sorry, I should have said partly exposes the back. Thanks for the suggestion but I think I'd rather alter.

🤣 I showed my DM, who loves Quality Street, and she said that too! The tie bit does look a bit like that...

I still love it overall though so I think accessorising is the way to go, then maybe sewing something on.

Add chiffon or wide ribbon to the ties to add more volume to cover v

damelza · 28/03/2026 11:49

I'd get a chiffon scarf maybe multicoloured that blends with the dress colour and somehow tie it in with the existing tie to drape over the "naked" bit at the back.

damelza · 28/03/2026 11:50

Cross posted with you @AnchorWHAT 😊

allthingsinmoderation · 28/03/2026 12:24

Could you wear something underneath it like a sheer lacy body?

Twogonksandapencil · 28/03/2026 13:03

As it is such a bargain you could order another dress and use the material to make a panel, so it would match exactly. Or instead of a panel, how about replacing the ties at the back with wider, more drapey ties which would provide more coverage but still fit in with the style of the dress?

Found this on shein, attracts to bra straps!!
You could attack to the back instead of front.

This is genius!

Malinia · 28/03/2026 14:48

At that price I would buy another one and have the back altered using the extra fabric

HarryPotterandtheClimateofFear · 28/03/2026 14:54

Why not replace the ties at the back with much wider ribbon (maybe in a contrasting colour eg bright pink) so the bow covers a lot more skin?

MarriedTwiceOneGrownUpDaughter · 28/03/2026 15:33

A lacy / mesh top underneath will do the trick. Ideally the same colour but black is very chic too. I have a selection of these in different colours because I hate wearing fake tan.

Lace back vest from amazon?

Jane143 · 28/03/2026 19:03

Wear a really sheer tight fitting vest top under it if you have one. Maybe black or skintone

HeatherCross · 28/03/2026 19:16

I can't open it either. A lot of open back dresses are with a bow across the back. Very sexy/ cute. If you post it to my email l will suggest some things as l am a tailoress and am used to doing the impossible!!!!!! [email protected]

Carla786 · 28/03/2026 20:22

That's a good idea too. This thread has been really helpful.

I wear a black vest under backless dresses so I can wear them at work

Aluna · 28/03/2026 21:10

Just got some emerald green lace or chiffon on Etsy and sew in a panel.
