These shoes yes or no?

Im not sure if these are still in vogue or not. I like the brown ones as they would go with everything and black is too harsh for summer.
They are fisherman type without enclosed toes...I prefer toes out. I normally wreck my hip replacement in heels but I want something flat for jeans this summer.
Opinions please.

I also bought these in the Van Dal sale and I think they will take me anywhere and go with everything.

The sandals look very plastic to me for £55.00

There are plenty of fisherman sandals out there-those are a no from me.

No point voting on the other as you are buying...🤐

CBA2RTFT · 25/03/2026 15:24

Sandals are quite inoffensive and would go with lots of things.
The other shoes are awful; look like they belong to that older, unmarried, prim schoolteacher you used to have.

LuciferTheMorningStar · 25/03/2026 15:29

Elderly shoes, both. The first ones would be ok if much chunkier; now they just look extremely dated. The second ones are a straight-up no, under any circs.

henlake7 · 25/03/2026 15:32

yup, I was going to say it depends how old you want to look!
The second ones are def giving orthopaedic (not a bad thing if thats what you need!).
Also those type of sandals really look better if they are chunkier IMO.

Picklelily99 · 25/03/2026 20:07

I can't decide if they're really 'old lady with bunions', or cute? Yeah, old lady it is! The Van Dal ones, not my style at all, but surprisingly, I like! I can see the appeal of slip on and stylish!

Badlands1 · 25/03/2026 20:26

Both pretty terrible - first dull but just about Ok if there is nothing else and they are comfortable ( but there are much better around)
See if Camper have a sale going
Second ones absolutely not agree with a PP re orthopaedic vibe

corblimeyguvnr · 25/03/2026 20:31

Fisherman's sandals are a regular topic of conversation here every year 😂 you either like them or hate them.

Basically the van dals are for slipping on and nipping out to the shops becase ballerinas hurt my my feet and keep falling off. I have a lot of van dsls because they do my size and come in 5.5 EE. I can sometimes get away with E bug I must have a 5.5.
I dont do chunky Im 64 and look ridiculous in them. I thought they are just like loafers really but a bit more lightweight and will look fine with jeans not dresses or skirts.
Talking about chunky I have these goth relics from the 1980s and youve got to admit they look ridiculous on me so chunky is out!!!! 😂

I’d say that the fisherman’s sandals that are current have a closed toe rather than open and the Van Dal ones, I think it’s quite an old fashioned shape but like most things it’s in the styling and if you like them then up to you.

namechangeabc123 · 25/03/2026 23:15

I actually like the Van Dal ones. They look quite European to me, although what you wear with them will make or break them. They could look ‘elderly lady at church’ quite easily.
The fisherman sandals are not chunky enough to look current.

Myneighbourisanosyoldgit · 26/03/2026 07:33

Tbh, I for one don't like either of the shoes but... if you like them OP and wnt to wear them what does it matter what other people think?
Do people really look at each other and decide if the other person is fashionably dressed or not irl or is it just here on MN?
Personally I'm not bothered what is supposedly currently 'in', I like clothles that fit properly and make me feel good, life is too short to do otherwise.

PadamPadamPDoom · 26/03/2026 07:37

Surely the whole point of an anonymous S&B board is that people can express honest opinions they would never share in person?

I don’t see how this distinction would be hard to understand.

Myneighbourisanosyoldgit · 26/03/2026 07:41

That's true, it has to be said a lot of the things featured on here that some people fawn over as being so good are imo quite awful.
As they say the customer is always right - in matters of taste.

Well and more than that, I see it as akin to a friend asking, 'what do you think of these shoes'

and I would be honest and say 'horrible'.

BIossomtoes · 26/03/2026 08:45

I’m eight years older than you @Gettingbysomehow and I wear a lot of chunky shoes, I don’t think I look ridiculous and I don’t think you would either. You can’t judge by resurrecting a pair of 40 year old shoes that bear no resemblance to those currently in the shops.

WildLeader · 26/03/2026 11:32

WednesdaysChild73 · 25/03/2026 09:37

50+ here and hell no to both!

Damned right! The last time these were in vogue was the height of the Roman Empire.

they are so ugly.

Gettingbysomehow · 26/03/2026 14:41

My shoes have arrived and I Iove them. They are very european chic and just look like slimmer loafers. So comfortable. Bear in mind Im 64 not in my 20's so chunky is out.
Ill post a pic in a bit.

I’m 72 and wear chunky.

PadamPadamPDoom · 26/03/2026 15:30

I’m 64. I wear big clumpy boots pretty much every day of the year until it gets too hot. 😅

(I have for several years. As footwear fashion evolves my next everyday pair may be sleeker. We’ll see …)

It’s a shame Grenson have moved away from half sizes - I’m sure things I bought from them in past years did offer half sizes.)

Gettingbysomehow · 26/03/2026 15:35

I think my job puts me off chunky footwear. Part of it involves fitting orthopaedic boots. Always in black.

lovemelongtime · 26/03/2026 16:25

For fishermans sandals you should go for enclosed toes if you want them to look modern or fashionable and a bit thicker sole. There's planty of nicer ones out there.

Im afraid I think the others are really matronly and not remotely on trend will age you by 10 years

corblimeyguvnr · 26/03/2026 17:13

It's not old women I think of with fishermen's sandals - it's old men with socks on and hairy legs.

Topseyt123 · 26/03/2026 17:24

I quite like the Clarks ones but the Van Dal ones are awful.

starfishmummy · 26/03/2026 18:48

I like the sandals but I'm hardly the epitome of fashion. I also know that they'd look awful on my short wide feet - and thats even if I could get my high instep into tjem!

Gettingbysomehow · 26/03/2026 19:25

High insteps are a curse starfishmummy!!! Ive given up on the brown sandals now Ive decided I dont like them. Im very pleased with my vandals though. They are much cuter than ballet shoes and more comfortable. I want my clothes to be the star not my shoes.
I do think though ghat we need some chunky shoe wearers to pose for us on here. Im curious now.
